[00:02:06] Speaker C: Yeah, we've got two lovely guests with us today. They are sisters, and we are going to be talking about sailing in Alaska today with Corey and Lindsay. Welcome to the show, you guys.
[00:02:18] Speaker A: Yeah, thank you so much.
[00:02:20] Speaker C: We're excited to have you. Now, Corey, you reached out to us because you had booked a kind of last minute for Alaska kind of last minute cruise.
And you had mentioned, mentioned that you did a lot of I'll call it DIY planning in terms of excursions and you're traveling with littles. And we thought, wow, that sounds like a great show idea. But before we get talking about Alaska and figuring out how to do Alaska a little bit budget E. I'm going to say budget E because Alaska's not, it's still not an inexpensive cruise. But let's talk about your like Disney and cruising backgrounds. Corey, let's start with your you and then we'll throw it to Lindsay.
[00:03:03] Speaker A: Actually, I was thinking back to what our first cruise was and it was on the Easy Jet when they had a cruise line. It was a river cruise out of Amsterdam. They are no longer in business because it was kind of like a hostel oz a river cruise. And then since then my husband and I have done Alaska two other times, both on Princess.
And then we've fluked cruise Norwegian a few times in the Met Carnival. And then we had booked a Disney cruise for March or April 2020. And I'd finally convinced my husband to go. He's not a big parks guy. And then of course the pandemic happened. So we had a huge cruise credit after that. And he said, one cruise, I'm only doing it once. So we went fantasy and spent all the money. We booked everything because we had a large cruise credit. And then at the end he's like, let's book another one. Because Purvis was so great and he won't do the parks, but he will do a Disney cruise anytime. We do the parks quite a bit. Usually as sisters with kids. We'll take all the kids mom and kid trip and usually we'll kind of alternate. We'll do like a Disney World year and then like a Disneyland year since we're on this coast. And how many Disney cruises have I done now? We've done a couple on the fantasy and then we've done the Treasure, the Destiny we just did.
And in September we, with our mom and all the kids did the repositioning cruise from Vancouver to Honolulu, which was great.
And then I took my son and my mother and we just did the repositioning cruise from San Diego to Vancouver on the Magic before the dry dock. And then we kind of convinced her last minute, like, let's just do this Alaska cruise that's too good of a deal not to do. So it's kind of where we're at.
[00:04:56] Speaker C: And Lindsay, you Are like the parks planner. When did you get into cruising? Like, have all of your cruises been with Corey or did you start cruising, you know, earlier?
[00:05:06] Speaker D: Yeah. So I'm pretty recent to Disney Cruise Line and really inspired by some of her family and the travel that they've been able to complete.
But my husband and I, we did a spring break trip with, we have a set of twins, so at the time they were six.
And that was a wonderful experience.
And I think it was just a natural transition for us where DVC owners, we go to both parks on either side of the coast. So for us to just kind of explore DCL was the natural next step.
[00:05:38] Speaker C: Yeah. All right, well, so how old are all the, all the kids give us like the, the ages and, you know, stats for all the K between these two families. Corey, we'll start with you right now.
[00:05:53] Speaker A: Her twins are seven, about to be eight. My son is three.
And then I'm currently pregnant. So we'll be adding one more sometime this fall to the cruising.
[00:06:03] Speaker B: Congratulations.
[00:06:04] Speaker C: Congrats. Oh, another a DCL sailing baby.
[00:06:10] Speaker B: I'm going to say Disney calls them new consumers.
[00:06:13] Speaker A: Yes, new consumers. That's one of my biggest regrets is never doing Jack Jack diaper dash with my son. So that's my goal for this one. I'm like, we're doing the diaper dash.
[00:06:21] Speaker C: Yeah, you have to, you have to schedule it so that the baby is like, what is it like? You want them to be like, big, Older than six months? Well, you have to be older than six months to sail, but you kind of want them to be under one because like, sometimes, you know, they start. Well, depending upon the child, some, some children will start with the walking stuff, you know, pretty early. So, yeah, you gotta time it just right, Corey. All right.
Now, your husband is a reluctant Disney person, it sounds like, but is, is a thumbs up for cruising.
[00:06:55] Speaker A: Yes. He has done the parks. He doesn't love them. He hates the heat in Florida, so he just won't do Florida anymore. But he loves a cruise and the service on Disney is so good that he's like Disney or nothing at this point.
[00:07:10] Speaker C: Wow. I love that. I mean, I listen, I love somebody that we can convert completely into a Disney adult. But I'm okay. Someone that we can just convert into a Disney cruise lover if we can't get them full on Disney adult mode. Right. So that's, you know, to me that's like, that's a win, I would say. Well, let's, let's start with this cruise. Like, how far in advance this was early July. We're, we're recording at the end of July.
When did you kind of decide and pull the trigger on booking this cruise? Because I know you mentioned it was in your note to us that it was last minute and you did like a, a GTY, I think so we
[00:07:48] Speaker A: were maybe right at like 30 days out when we booked maybe just slightly before. And Disney's just been offering so many good discounts that I'm like, I feel like it's cheaper to cruise than be at home at this point. We might as well do it. Plus we didn't have to pay for airfare either, so that was a big selling point.
[00:08:09] Speaker C: Yeah, well, and funny enough, you guys live just maybe an hour and a half south of us, right? So you're in Washington state so you can drive up to Vancouver. We always talk about that. You save the money on, on the, you know, flight costs and whatnot and you just have to make sure you time things right. Now did you plan on going? I presume you went the night before the cruise. Unless you were going to spend some time in Vancouver. No, you went the day of. Oh, wow. Okay. I mean, you can do it. Listen, you're driving distance. I'm not, I'm not going to judge because when you're driving distance you can do it. I just, I get scared because I get scared of like delays at the border and whatnot.
[00:08:47] Speaker A: So when we did the cruise from Vancouver to Honolulu, we did go the night before and with young kids, like that transition night isn't really enjoyable. It's like unpacking, getting them in, settled into a new place where they're not going to sleep and then repacking up the next day. Plus the hotels are very expensive, so I was like, let's just get up very early to make sure we don't hit all this I5 traffic, border traffic. So I think she lives a little farther out on the coast.
We left maybe at like 4:30 in the morning and then she, I think left later.
I wasn't confident that our 3 year old would not need multiple stops. So we just had a leisurely drive into Vancouver and it worked out really well.
[00:09:29] Speaker C: Yeah. Lindsay, what time did you guys leave?
[00:09:32] Speaker D: We left around 4 in the morning and it was super convenient. We just, you know, we're pre packed, put everyone in the van and drove up. And I definitely think it was low stress for us and we gave ourselves enough time too that if had we, you know, got stuck in traffic, we had a generous amount of time.
Had we had Any kind of hiccup in that travel.
[00:09:56] Speaker C: Yeah. Now any hesitation about booking on the Magic? Had you guys sailed on the Magic before? Of course, she's the oldest in the fleet, but she's so classic iconic. I mean, there's so much to love about the Magic with Rapunzel's and with the Tangled musical on board. Like, but was, you know, were you even thinking like between the Magic and the Wonder? Cause those are of course your two options for Alaska.
[00:10:19] Speaker A: We had done 10 nights on the Wonder and loved it.
[00:10:22] Speaker C: Oh, because you did the Vancouver, Hawaii. Yeah.
[00:10:24] Speaker A: And loved the Wonder. And then I had done the four night from San Diego on the Magic.
At that point in time, she's going into dry dock and she was really showing some. Some age. The carpet was in rough condition, but I still had a good time. So I don't think we really hesitated at all. It just happened to be what lined up with the dates that worked for us and happened to be the best deal. So.
[00:10:49] Speaker D: Yeah. And one of my goals as a new kind of DCL cruiser is to experience all the ships. So I hadn't yet been on the Magic, so it was a good opportunity for, for us to try it out.
[00:11:02] Speaker C: Yeah. I mean, you gotta be a completionist, right? You're like, you're like, even with the Parks, you're like, I gotta hit all the different parks and with the cruise line, I gotta hit all the different ships. Especially before they retire. Now, they haven't announced anything, so we don't know when, but you know, we don't think that they are for long for this world in the sense that we don't think they're going to be sailing another 10 years, maybe another five years, but we'll see. Yeah. So it's a fantastic opportunity. Now you mentioned deals, Corey and you, I know you had mentioned that you have sailed pretty much always like gty. Tell us about that. And did you have any concerns with booking that way for the Magic? And what room category were you guys getting?
[00:11:46] Speaker A: Usually we book GTY just to save money.
I have not had an issue, I will say, until this cruise with any room that we've received. And we just did an ocean view gty, so we've never actually picked a stateroom ahead of time either. GTY or I upgrade us at the port because I can't help but ask to see if there's anything available for upgrade this time. I actually really like the Wonder and the Magic, their inside rooms, the way they're organized. So I was like, I would have been Happy sailing inside. It just happened to be kind of what was available.
We were assigned near each other down on the first floor, and our rooms were in, like, a pretty rough shape down on the first floor. My. My room that was assigned was very musty. It was very smelly. And being pregnant, I just had, like, a little bit of an emotional breakdown because I'm like, I don't know that I can stay in this room feeling this kind of nauseous. But the cast members were wonderful.
They were going to come in and clean everything and change it. And I said, is there any other room? Like, I'll go to an inside. I like that layout. That's fine. And they did move us to a different room just because I didn't think I was having those thoughts, like, do I just get in our car and drive home? I don't know that I can do a week. But that's the only hiccup we've ever had with a GTY room. Other than that, we've found some rooms that we really love sailing in that way, too, that we never would have booked before on the Destiny. We're on the second floor near the kids club. Loved that location. I would never have booked that. So. So I, like, kind of the surprise and not knowing where we're going to be, but I don't know how you feel.
[00:13:18] Speaker C: Yeah. Lindsay, how did your. How did your room turn out?
[00:13:21] Speaker D: You know, I think the Magic is an older ship. Right.
And we knew we wouldn't be spending a ton of time in our room, but we. We did have a plumbing kind of issue, which I think has been kind of ongoing, but, you know, it was okay.
Staff came in and fixed it. We had a sink that just, like, overflowed somehow. We weren't using it, but water came up anyway.
[00:13:46] Speaker A: So.
Yeah, I don't know.
[00:13:48] Speaker D: Again, I think we wanted to really just put our resources towards some great excursions and experiences. So, yeah, that's kind of a training for us.
[00:13:57] Speaker C: It is one of those things. There. There are risks. I don't think they're necessarily not worth the reward. Right. You can get a great room.
You get a great deal in particular, and, you know. But if your room is really unsatisfactory, like, for Corey, I would tell you, I was so sensitive to smells when I was pregnant. And so if I had walked in a room that had, like, a musty smell, I would not have been able to stay there either. So. And I don't know what it is about, like, pregnancy hormones. And not everybody has this. Of Course, but like I had like the, the world's greatest, like super sniffer. Like, I don't know what it. And I don't have it. Normally I do not have like, but like smells Like I really, I had significant aversions to things if they smelled off to me. So I, I totally understand where you're coming from.
Well, let's talk about. Okay, you get up, you, you drive up early in the morning. What time did you kind of make it to Canada Place and where were you parking? Because obviously you're each driving separately with your respective families. And how was sort of the, the check in and port process?
[00:15:05] Speaker A: We did try to fit into my sister's minivan and I was like, yeah, there's no way. With the number of suitcases we needed to bring for Alaska. I'm like, it would not be enjoyable for anybody.
So I think my family arrived maybe about 9, 45, 10, which we, that had kind of been the window we were planning on. I figured we could get some coffee if we had time.
And then we late, kind of in the process had decided we would just pay for parking at Canada Place. Like, it's expensive, but it was just going to be easy. And then by the time we decided it was fully booked out for pre reservations. And I was like, okay, now we'll pivot.
So we actually parked at the convention center, which is like right next to Canada Place, just across that little like walkway area.
And it was incredible because there was nobody there.
It saved us over $200 in parking and it was an easy walk. So I would 100% recommend it. We did joke the entire cruise that we would come back and our cars would be towed because it just seemed so good to be true.
So our cars were not towed. She got off first and I was like, please send me a picture of our car. Make sure it's still there. But 100% recommend parking there. And then there was nobody else leaving the parking garage at the same time, so that was easy too.
And our check in was really easy. I think we had an 11 to 1115 port arrival, but they let us in a little bit early, dropped off our bags, and it was very quick. I think we sat for maybe like 20 minutes before we were boarding, so no issues. Previously when we boarded in Vancouver, it had been a little bit slower, but this time it was great.
[00:16:46] Speaker C: Nice. Now were you able to drop off your bags like first and then go park or did you have to schlep your bags from the parking garage?
[00:16:54] Speaker A: We had tried to, and I think previously in September, that was an option. And then this morning it wasn't an option for like a drive up drop off. So we did have to move our bags, but it was such a short walk that it was okay.
[00:17:07] Speaker C: Well, I mean, that's a good tip that there are other options for parking that are really close and really convenient and might save you a few bucks. I love that. All right, well, let's talk about boarding. You get on to the beautiful Disney Magic. Lindsay, you had not seen her before. You walk into her atrium.
What are you thinking when you start that cruise?
[00:17:28] Speaker D: Well, she's very similar, right? To a lot of, I think, the classic ships. We'd been on the Dream and the Wonder as well, so. Yeah, very similar.
So I was just looking forward to kind of learning more about the layout. You know, it's a little different once you're walking around and get that feel totally now It's.
[00:17:45] Speaker C: It's really nice if you've been on the Wonder before to go on the Magic because everything is in the exact same place. And even if you've been on the Dream and the Fantasy, I feel like getting on to the Magic and the Wonder is also very easy because even though the deck levels are not exactly the same, maybe some of them are exactly the same, but when you get to the higher decks, they're not. But everything's still in like the same place, really. Did you find it easy to navigate? Navigate the ship? Lindsay, I'll ask you, since Corey had already been on the Magic.
[00:18:15] Speaker D: Yeah, yeah, I think it, you know, it's a much smaller ship, so everything's really convenient. Yeah. And Disney, I think, has that kind of comfortable feel. You know, things are similar.
So.
[00:18:26] Speaker C: Yeah, totally. All right, well, embarkation day. You get on board, what is your plan of attack? Corey, do you go to cabanas? Do you go to sit down lunch? Are you running to the nursery or the kids club to get your kiddo registered? Like what, what's like the first thing you've got to do? Of course, after the welcome on board,
[00:18:46] Speaker A: usually if we have to make any dining changes, that's my first stop. This time we did not need to. Even though we booked late, we were able to get Paulo dinner, Paulo brunch.
So we didn't need any changes.
So my family went to sit down. I'm usually a sit down embarkation day, unless it's a wish plop ship. And then I'll do like full deck food.
So we went to sit down and then they were still boarding. And I messaged like, hey, you can come sit with us. And they went to the cabanas instead.
[00:19:17] Speaker C: Everybody has a different style. I feel like on embarkation day, there's not a wrong way. I have to agree with you, Corey, though. On the Wish class ships, the extra special right way is go for the pool deck food, because that's some of the best food on the ship.
Bar non. All right, well, I want to. I want to jump right in and talk about your ports. Now you've got. I know you went to Icy Straight Point, but I know of course you've got Glacier Day and then you have, what is it, one or two other ports, I can't remember.
[00:19:44] Speaker A: Then it was. It was Glacier Day. Skagway. I see Straight Point and Ketchikan.
[00:19:50] Speaker C: Ketchikan, that's right. Okay. All right, well, so let's, let's. I know you did some of the, like, as we mentioned, some DIY stuff in the other ports, but we gotta start with Glacier Day because you can't not talk about Glacier Day. It's kind of that iconic day on board a Disney Alaska cruise where you sail through one of the fjords and up to one of the glaciers. And then some people get off the ship onto these smaller boats and do what they call a Glacier Explorer. But everybody's out on deck looking at the scenery, getting pictures with the Fab Five in their Alaska gear. What were you guys doing on Glacier Day?
[00:20:25] Speaker A: Lindsay could not sleep because she was so excited about Glacier Day, so had been to get up early, but she was up at like 5am to start, like getting us ready to get in line for characters.
And her and her husband had decided to do the adult Glacier Explorer. And then my husband and I would stay back on with all the kids on the boat because we've done Alaska cruises before.
So after they ate their 6am breakfast, maybe not quite that early, but she got in line for Mickey while my family was finishing breakfast at cabanas. And then my husband isn't really into character, character picture. So he got in the mini line. And that's kind of how we worked the whole morning that we do one character go to hit my husband in the other line, then he would get in the next line and just kind of placehold for us. But we really lucked out because we had the most beautiful weather on this cruise. Our Glacier Day was a bit foggy in the morning, and then it cleared out and it was really beautiful and sunny. So our whole time we barely had any rain, which has not been our experience on Previous Alaska cruises. So Glacier Day was. It was kind of just a vibe. Because even though we're, like, waiting in the character lines, everyone's in such a good mood, the weather's good, we know we're making friends in line. So it didn't really seem like we waited in line that long, even though we spent a good portion of our morning doing characters.
It was pretty foggy in the morning, and my son Luca is pretty sensitive to sound. And I didn't even think of this. They started blowing the foghorn, and he was instantly upset. We didn't have headphones for him, so we had to rush down and get those. But our first Mickey picture, she's just crying and covering his ears.
So we did round trip back and do Mickey again in the afternoon. But if you have a kid with, like, some sensory stuff, definitely just pack them in case. Cause I didn't anticipate that very loud foghorn.
[00:22:19] Speaker C: That is a really good tip. We've even had our friend Chad was on the show talking about going to sailing, a west coast sailing to Baja. Like, so they went to Ensenada and Catalina, and they had so much fog that the foghorn was going, like, constantly, like, all night, even one night. But if you're out on deck especially, it is very loud if the DCL foghorn. Now, other ships, if they're farther away, you might hear it, but it won't be so loud. But it is a very loud sound. And if you have a sensory sensitive kid, particularly to sounds. Yeah, headphones.
I try to remember to pack Nathan's headphones because he's also sensitive to loud noises. I'll be honest. I don't always remember them, but at least if they're in the room, if they're in the state room, at least somebody can run down and get them. I'm curious, Corey, now, did your husband get in any. Any of the character pictures? Do you have any pictures with him with one of the characters? Like a family photo of the three of you before. Before baby number two comes along?
[00:23:19] Speaker A: I think we have maybe two. And it was the second round of Mickey, because there wasn't another line to be in. And he was like, do I have to? I'm like, yes, one time you have to be in this family photo.
[00:23:29] Speaker C: Yes. Good job. Good job. Because honestly, like, it might be the only time you get, you know, a family photo. It's not. It may. May or may not be about the character. For some of us, it is about the character. But at least you can also get that family photo community as well. Now, how many characters did you guys end up getting?
[00:23:48] Speaker A: Character that was available?
[00:23:50] Speaker C: Oh, you did them all. Okay, so I want to go. I want to go through. And you tell me, because I. I want to make sure I have the whole. The full list. So we've got Mickey, Minnie, Goofy in his ski wear.
We've got Daisy, Donald. That's five. We've got Chip and Dale, who are usually together, but they don't have an outfit. They're just in their regular outfit.
And then did you see Coda? Because I know Koda is out on the magic, but I don't know. He doesn't have scheduled meet times.
[00:24:20] Speaker A: We didn't do Koda on glacier day, but we did see him later.
[00:24:24] Speaker C: There you go. I love it. All right, you guys, that's. I mean, eight. Eight characters. Now, did you also get Goofy on a different day in a different Alaska outfit in his lumberjack outfit?
[00:24:36] Speaker D: Oh, I did with my twins because their souvenirs were, of all things, some stuffed salmon, like stuffies, you know, like. So they wanted to go show Goofy and Mickey. So we did get them in their lumberjack outfits with some stuff.
[00:24:52] Speaker C: Oh, I love it. And that's perfect because. Because Mickey's in his, like, fisherman, like Alaskan fisherman, you know, yellow, whatever they call that, like, outfit. And then you've got. Yeah, then you've got Goofy and he's in like a fishing lumberjack outfit on. On Catch a Can day. But even other times, I think as well. I love that. I absolutely love that you guys are. What time, Lindsay, did you go on the. The Glacier Explorer and tell us what you thought about the. Because you did the adult only version. We did the family version. That was, I think, in the afternoon. I know there's a couple different times for. For a couple different options, but. Yeah. What time did you and your husband get on that boat?
[00:25:29] Speaker D: Sure. So I believe it was a little after three. Right. I'm trying to recall correctly.
And we were kind of on the fence. It was our first time being in Alas.
We knew it was kind of a must do, but we were kind of thinking, is it worth it? Right. Like, are we really going to.
[00:25:44] Speaker C: Expensive.
[00:25:45] Speaker D: Yeah. And are we going to see anything different than we might not see, you know, from the deck on our ship?
And I would definitely say for an adults only trip, it was worth it. And I felt comfortable leaving my children on board. I knew I had family there too, you know, if anything went sideways in the kids club, that they were approved to also pick them up. Up. So yeah, we had a great time. It was very clear.
We had a wonderful naturalist on board.
Yeah. And she had a degree in science communications, so she was very well spoken.
I learned all sorts of, you know, interesting kind of facts about not only where we were traveling, but also animals and cultural aspects too of Alaska that they shared.
So yeah, I would definitely say it was well worth it for us.
[00:26:34] Speaker C: Awesome. Now I know, Corey, you've done it on previous, you've done like a glacier explorer on other cruise lines. When you've done Glacier Day, do you feel like it's a thing you've got it? I mean you of course had your three year old and then you had Lindsay's two seven year olds to pay attention to. But so I understand why it's sort of a divide and conquer there. But do you feel like it's a kind of a must do? Do you feel like it's a one time thing? What would you say if somebody were to ask you like, is it worthwhile it.
[00:27:02] Speaker A: I think if you're going to do Alaska once, then absolutely it's worth it. You know, we're very lucky that we're close and we can go easily. And we also see quite a lot of wildlife around our home. So there's nothing on our Alaska list that's like, I have to see this or I won't feel like I did an Alaska cruise. So I think if you're only going to do it one time, I definitely would do it.
My husband and I actually haven't done like a glacier explorer, but we have rented kayaks. Like it was a long time ago, 2012, when Mendenhall Glacier still touched the water.
So we just rented a kayak and did like a solo kayak there, which was incredible. So when I brought up the idea of doing the Glacier Explorer, my husband's like, we've already been like this close in a kayak. It's fine. We don't need to spend $400 a person to get a little bit closer. And again, our weather was so nice that I think we really lucked out just having great views from the ship.
I definitely don't think it's a make or break, like if you can't afford it.
Wonderful views from the ship. We stayed for over an hour and kind of just floated there, which in addition to that we did go down to Deck 4 and have some photos done down there.
No line. The most incredible photographer. That was so kind. I actually made my husband go back so we could do some like baby announcement photos. With her and she spent probably like 40 minutes with her. I was like, please let me tip you. They can't take tips. But I'm like, like we do deserve it. You spent all this time doing this for us. So that was a great place to do glacier viewing too because the top deck can get a little bit busy
[00:28:33] Speaker C: and you can't really get great sort of rail space if you wanted to take family photos yourselves. You can't really get great rail space up on the top deck because everybody's waiting in line for the characters and so everybody's on the rail waiting in line and then you're taking a photo, you know, at a specific location on the rail. So it, it is. I, I absolutely agree. I think if you want like some family photos that are, aren't charact going down to Deck 4 or just, if you want to just watch and you don't, you know, you want a better, a great view, go down to Deck 4 and sometimes there will be photographers there. That's awesome. I, I have to say I think Disney has done a great job of hiring in the photography department. You know, they used to contract that out and now it's actually an in house function. And so they're all Disney Cruise Line employees rather than vendors. And I just think, think that has been a really successful change for them. And I think they've done a great job in taking, you know, family photos and spending time with you when they don't have a line. But they're also good with the, when there is a line, they're also good with moving people through, especially those, those character photos on the top deck. So I love that. Awesome.
[00:29:41] Speaker D: All right, well, sorry, Sam, since we're talking about photography, I was just gonna add one thing that I think might be helpful for new Disney Cruise Line 9th guess, which is to pre buy that photo package because I made the mistake of not doing it and then I thought, oh, I'll just buy it on board, I'll pay the little bit extra. Right. And of course we were so busy, busy, busy, I didn't buy it on board. So then I had to buy it
[00:30:05] Speaker C: when we got home after.
At least you can, at least you can. You didn't used to be able to if you're a US citizen and maybe Canadian too, I can't remember. But if you're a U.S. citizen, you can buy them after, but within a certain time period. But it used to be you couldn't even do that. So.
Wow. Yeah. But buy it ahead of time if you're Going to Alaska, you're going to take lots of pictures with the photographers. So buy the photo package if you're on other cruises, like, figure out how many pictures you're going to get your family to stand for. So that's a great tip, though, Lindsay.
All right, well, let's talk about your other ports of call and then we'll, of course, talk about some onboard stuff. Of course. Course, technically, Glacier Day is not a port of call, but we kind of look at it like a port day because it's so, so big and important for a lot of people. What was your first actual land port of call?
[00:31:00] Speaker A: That was Skagway.
[00:31:01] Speaker C: Tell us what you guys planned for Skagway and how it all turned out.
[00:31:05] Speaker A: So we've. I've been to Skagway now a few times, and we decided to rent a car and kind of do our own White Pass tour.
Um, we thought about doing the train because I've never done it and my 3 year old is obsessed with, with any kind of like, train, gondola, anything. But when we looked at the cost for seven people and, like, it would be so much cheaper to just rent a car and then we could kind of do what we want. We can stop when we need to, so. And we had looked through Avis because there's only a couple car rental agencies, and again, it was last minute, so their rates were very high. So I ended up booking with Turo, which I was a bit nervous about because it's the first time I had used Turo. And again, our experience was incredible. Like, it was just parked in the public parking. We walked off, everything was there. She had some informational driving guide in there. It was very simple. We had an issue, we thought, with some of the locks, but she helped us fix it.
So that was wonderful.
Our big mistake that day on our itinerary was that we were going to stop and get coffee and get snacks because there's not much you can take off the boat. We had like a few snacks from home, but our kids and maybe someone's husband was like, no, we just need to drive. That coffee line is too long. And I was like, there's like five people in line.
So we made the mistake of not stopping. And then for the entire drive just had like a Ziploc with some home snacks in it. And everybody kind of faded and was grumpy by the end.
So definitely stop, get snacks, get coffee for sure.
But the drive was so nice. It was relaxing.
It was very foggy. The mountain was pretty socked in. But Then once we got up to White Pass, it cleared out and we just kind of stopped whenever we saw something that we wanted to get out and look at, which on the way up was a lot of stops. We stopped at the top and let the kids hike around.
And it was beautiful. My husband and I do a lot of backpacking, so it was like getting to a high alpine lake with like zero effort. And the kids are like, I love hiking. I'm like, no effort to get up here. And you're just like, this is the best. Like, this would take three days if we were at home to get to something like this. But they had a great time. We, like went to another big lake through lake, like rocks in the lake for, I don't know, 20 minutes, which was. I'd put in the itinerary. My sister's like, really? Do you need to schedule in rock throwing? And I'm like. But it was their favorite thing.
[00:33:32] Speaker C: I mean, if you're a scheduler, if you're a planner, I mean, Bryant would schedule that in, I think was on the schedule.
[00:33:39] Speaker A: And they loved it.
We did not see any animals really, which my husband really wanted to see some bears. And in the guide it was like, look for bears. This is super bear heavy. And we did not see any there.
And then we kind of had to push the last little stretch because everyone was hungry and having a meltdown. And we ended at Car Cross Crossing, which they've done a really great job kind of building a little village there with lots of local shops. Food was expensive and maybe not so great, but there are some food options.
So we looked around there for a bit. My husband and 3 year old and I did a maple syrup tasting, which my three year old thought was great, just spoonfuls of sugar. So he was great.
And then we had intended to make some more stops on the way home, but again, everyone's kind of tired. It was a long day. And then when we got back to Skagway, we just left the car, messaged the Turo renter, and then did a little walk around town. But it was great. I would absolutely do it again. Maybe I would schedule like a hike that we wanted to do in there. That's probably the only thing I would do different.
[00:34:48] Speaker C: Yeah, that sounds awesome. For those who have not heard of Turo before, it's basically you are using a company, but you are renting someone else's car. You're renting another owner's car, as opposed to renting just from like an Avis or Enterprise or whatnot a car rental company.
[00:35:04] Speaker B: Toro is just a platform where people can list their own vehicles for rental and then, yeah, Turo facilitates that and takes a cut of it, but you're basically renting it from an individual.
[00:35:13] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, but that's a great idea. Now I will say for those who are wondering, what do we mean by there's not snacks to take off with you?
Disney has ended any of their sort of the pre packaged snack things that he used to.
[00:35:26] Speaker B: Well, no, anything. Anything that's prepackaged in plastic is kind of what where they drew the line so that there's not a lot of options there.
[00:35:33] Speaker C: Right. And you're not supposed to take off like loose food. So food that is like, I mean, like technically you're not supposed to take off food that's in a Ziploc, right. You're supposed to take. You're only supposed to take off on and off. Food that is like factory sealed. I mean, they don't, they don't always enforce this, especially in like the United States and Canada. But it's just something to be aware of in other countries. They're super. They might be super harsh about enforcement and you can actually get a big fine. So they really isn't like it used to be you could get like those boxes of cereal and take those off with you from cabanas, but now all the cereal is in like these big jug things that you, you know, fill your bowl from. So and they've done it to eliminate, you know, plastic and paper waste, of course. So it's all environmental concerns. So it's all for good reasons. But it means that if you have young kids and you need snacks to go with you, you have limited options unless you stop off the ship and definitely, as Corey mentioned, stop in town. Because once you leave like Skagway proper, you are in kind of the wilderness. There's not like shops every, you know, few miles that you might have at home.
Sounds like a great day, though. Lindsay, what did you think of this? Corey planned this whole thing. Like, how did it work out other than everybody being grumpy without snacks?
[00:36:51] Speaker D: I think at first I said that was our favorite thing that we had done as a family. So it was really wonderful. Yeah, it felt great to just kind of get away from the crowd and then experience just the beautiful nature.
It was another enough, I think, of a challenge for my 7 year olds. Like when we would stop, you would, you know, we'd see a waterfall or maybe there'd be a little trail or a hike that we could do there.
But it was also still reasonable. Like, you know, we could spend 30 minutes at a stop, but then also get back in the car and keep going along the way.
You do cross from into Canada too, so, you know, we had to bring our passports and do all of that, and that was pretty seamless as well.
[00:37:30] Speaker C: That's a great tip. If you are doing any even of the train ones. Anytime where you're going up until like the Yukon, if you're planning on going really any length, you are probably going to be crossing back into Canada from Alaska. And so you need to have your passport to get across the border both directions.

[00:39:04] Speaker A: Yes. And this is the first time we had been to Icy Straight Point because it's a newer port stop. I think they did a really nice job building it out. It's really beautiful.
I appreciate what they have put together. It feels like almost a private island that they've created for excursions and things like that. Since we had never been, we didn't have any big goals. I do think next time maybe we do whale watching because people, we came back and said the whale watching was incredible. But they do have really large gondolas. And like I said, my son is obsessed with gondolas. Like obsessed with them. We watched YouTube videos of them. So that was the big thing on his list that he wanted to do. But the gondola is kind of expensive.
So I think a tip for that is if you pay for any kind of excursion, it includes a gondola ticket. And so we had booked the family scavenger hunt because it was just a little bit more than the ticket was for the gondola. Plus we got to do this little hike excursion, definitely for preschool or young school age kids. But it's just you get off the boat and you do the nature trail and then they have a backpack for you that has little stuffies in it.
And the stuffies, they hide along the way, so you'll kind of walk for a little bit. And our naturalist that was with us was a wildlife guide. So she'd talk about the plants, talk about wildlife, and then all of a sudden they'd be able to like do this little stuffy scavenger hunt.
So they loved it. My son thought it was great.
He's not always the biggest walker, but he did fine. It wasn't very long and it wasn't a difficult trail.
And then prior to that, in the morning we had ridden the gondolas and it was really low tide, so we did a long beach day just letting him look in all the tide pools. There were so many animals, starfish, tons of sea cucumbers, little crabs. So we spent quite a lot of time just on the beach letting him explore that and had intended to get back on the boat for lunch because again, food was very expensive. But we ended up getting stuck on the other side of the gondola. That's where Disney of ports. You have to take the green gondola over to get to the red one. And then by the time we got there, another ship was in port. I think it was a Norwegian boat and it was massive. And then the lines over there were very long.
So probably my best advice would be to get off early before any other boats are allowed to disembark and go into the port, because then it did get pretty busy. But overall I would go back there again. No, no issues.
[00:41:40] Speaker C: I think that's a great tip. I, I would not have thought that the, the cost of an excursion, one would include the gondola, but two, that it would only be a little bit more expensive than if you purchase the gondola directly.
So that I feel like that's a great tip because then you're, you're kind of getting like the bonus, right, of the gondola. Plus the excursion.
You know, if. If that's something that's important to you, to me, I would want to take the gondola. Even though I'm always terrified whenever I get in one of those. Even like the skyliner at Disney World. Lindsay, how did your 7 year olds do on this? Like, was the scavenger hunt, like, too young for them? Was it just right? Like, are they in that? Because, I mean, I feel like 7 year olds really like stuffies. I don't. Nathan still like stuffies and he's 12. So like, you know, it just depends on your kid.
[00:42:26] Speaker A: Oh, for sure.
[00:42:26] Speaker D: Yeah. You know, they had a ton of questions about it and I had to keep reminding them, like, I don't work for them. I don't know all the rules about the scavenger hunt. We'll find out when we get there. They were excited about it at first. I think they were, you know, too cool. Like, it was like, oh, mom, this is going to be lame once we got there. And then pretty soon they were right up front with the naturalist, like answering questions. You know, they were bought into a big time. And one of the benefits too is my husband and I also went on this scavenger hunt. So adults also get a backpack and stuffies. Not that we.
So the end result was that my two children had their backpacks with their stuffies, but then my husband and I also had ours. So once we got home, they were able to share that with a friend as like a souvenir that they brought back home with them. So. And they were really excited about it.
[00:43:21] Speaker B: I was gonna say, while we were in Europe, Sam, Nathan lost his mind on that scavenger hunt of the castle or mansion that we did with the mice that were everywhere.
[00:43:29] Speaker C: So, yeah, he loved it. And he's like I said, He's 12 and a half. He was running around trying.
[00:43:34] Speaker B: He was throwing elbows, trying to get to be first.
[00:43:35] Speaker C: He was trying to be first to get all.
[00:43:37] Speaker B: With his friend. With his friend. They were teams.
[00:43:40] Speaker C: But. But that's like, I mean, any that I. I love a. An excursion that has an interactive element. Right. Like, that's the way to get the kids in. Involved. All right, well, sounds like a great day at Icy Strait. As a little bit. Good tip though, about it being, you know, kind of crowded when there's multiple cruise ships. For those who don't know, Icy Straight Point is run and owned by a native tribe, but it's basically been built for cruise passengers. So it's not like an city like Juno or Something that exists otherwise but also has, like, cruise passengers. It was built specifically for cruise ships. But it's wonderful because it does get, you know, people to sort of visit the native community that, like, is really nearby. And all of, you know, the money that is flowing into that community is coming from, you know, the tourism dollars, which is another thing this week as we're recording.
[00:44:32] Speaker B: Right. That they. We're seeing the reporting that the DCL just re upped their commitment to Icy street point for 15 years. So this is definitely a cru port they will be returning to for quite a while.
[00:44:43] Speaker C: Yeah. And other. And other cruise lines have a big commitment to Icy Straight Point as well. All right.
[00:44:48] Speaker B: I think it's one of the stops that really only exists for the tourists during the Alaska season.
[00:44:53] Speaker C: Exactly. It goes quite. I think the town of Icy street goes completely quiet now. The tribe, it still, like, lives, I think, you know, like, you know, pretty like a mile or something nearby. But it's. Yeah, I think this sort of the stores and all that kind of stuff is really there for just the summer season. All right, well, let's talk about.
Oh, go ahead, Lindsay.
[00:45:13] Speaker D: I was going to add one more thing.
This is a good opportunity to see Koda. So that is the benefit of the scavenger hunt. Spoiler alert.
[00:45:23] Speaker C: Oh, I was dying for this. So I didn't know. This is the excursion that Coda appears on because he's no longer on the Wonder and he's only on the Magic because they go to Icy Straight and I didn't know what the actual excursion was. Awesome. Okay, sorry, tell us.
[00:45:36] Speaker A: Yes, yes.
[00:45:37] Speaker D: So at the end of gathering all of your stuffies in your backpack, they take you to kind of a more. Where would it be? Like a fire pit kind of meeting area.
And then everyone gathers around and Koda actually comes out from the forest. So he kind of surprises everyone.
And then there's an opportunity to take as many pictures as you would like with him.
[00:45:56] Speaker A: So that's awesome.
[00:45:57] Speaker C: And is it a limited number of people? Like. Like meaning is it like a really large group or kind of smaller group for. For that excursion then it was like medium.
[00:46:06] Speaker A: It was at least maybe 40. Yeah, 40 people.
[00:46:09] Speaker D: 40.
[00:46:10] Speaker A: And then also you got like a s' mores kit at end to roast s', mores, which my sister had bought at the top of the mountain for like 14. So another savings too. If you're trying. If you're gonna do that anyway, you get to do that at the end. But you will smell like campfire smoke.
[00:46:26] Speaker C: So, yeah, that's okay. I don't mind smelling like campfire smoke because it makes me think of s'. Mores. Okay, so I think we need to book Brian A.
Well, we're gonna, we wanna do another Alaska cruise, but I. We might have to book one that goes to Icy Straight Point. Cause I wanna, I wanna do the scavenge. I want the stuffies. I like stuffies too.
[00:46:46] Speaker A: This one blocking the sun from us.

[00:46:50] Speaker C: Oh my God, that is so cute, you guys.
[00:46:54] Speaker B: Oh, well, just add your requirements to the list of ongoing requirements. Although I don't think that there is a cruise that goes to Fiji and Icy Street Point. So you're gonna have to start to. I know.
[00:47:04] Speaker C: I have. So I have lots of.
I have lots of lists of places I want to go. Oh my God. That's amazing, you guys. Okay. All right, well, Ketchikan, we gotta talk. Catch a can. What'd you guys do in Ketchikan? Did you see bears? That's. I feel that's actually. Well, you got to see a bear in. In an icy street. You got a code up.
[00:47:22] Speaker A: Yeah, we didn't see any bears on this Alaska cruise, which was a bit of a disappointment. But it's understandable. We see a lot of bears in Washington.
[00:47:29] Speaker C: So on people's ring cameras, by the way, I feel like, yeah, we had
[00:47:34] Speaker A: a bobcat on our ring camera a little while ago. So we'll see bears occasionally.
Ketchikan day was a little bit difficult because we got into port so late.
It did give us an opportunity to do Paulo brunch, which was really nice, but I don't think we were getting off the ship until almost 2 in the afternoon.
Originally I had booked us like a private driver that was just going to take us to all the places. But then when we started looking at the time, I'm like, I don't know that we have enough time to make it worth it. And it happened to be right in that window when my 3 year old who was resisting naps probably needed a nap. So he was already kind of grumpy.
So we just really kind of walked around the city. I had done the Discovery center there before and really liked it. So my sister took her family and kids and they did some cute activities there. And then my husband and I, we just kind of walked around. We looked at the shops, we had lunch, did the Creek street photos. We did buy some really cute kids books at the local bookshop, which was great. I think the art was done in Vancouver, but same general area that Were really beautiful.
I do wish we had had more time because we would have done some other things. I have taken the bus, like out to the totem park before, and that's a really cheap, easy thing to do. Again, I just didn't feel like we had enough time.
[00:48:52] Speaker C: Lindsay, tell us about the Discovery center.
[00:48:55] Speaker A: Sure.
[00:48:56] Speaker D: So it was our first time being in Ketchikan, and so we went there. The staff was very accommodating. You buy a pass for the day and then they'll tell you all sorts of details. Like there's a water bottle filler, and you're welcome to come back and use the public restrooms that are there.
But it is like a little bit of the history of Alaska. There are quite a few displays. You get to learn about some natural
[00:49:22] Speaker C: as well as cultural things.
[00:49:24] Speaker D: There are. And I'm not sure if this is the correct term for them, but they're rangers that kind of operate the discovery center. So my kids did their junior ranger activity booklets when they were there, and then they got their junior ranger badge and got sworn in.
[00:49:39] Speaker C: The wilderness should be explored.
[00:49:44] Speaker A: So, yeah, I think for seven year
[00:49:46] Speaker D: olds and for her family, it was a great kind of stop. And then we spent the rest of our day walking around and exploring.
[00:49:52] Speaker C: I love that. I think I thought Ketchikan was like the cutest little town. I loved walking around that area. Like, I think that's a great idea. I'm gonna go get my. My junior ranger badge, though.
But for those who didn't catch my reference that's from the movie up and that you can actually. Actually, I don't know if they still have this, but at.
At animal kingdom, you used to be able to go around. They might still do it. Where you become a wilderness explorer. Yeah.
[00:50:19] Speaker A: You have like a whole booklet for parents. So I will say that if you're pushing a stroller around animal kingdom to
[00:50:25] Speaker D: get all those stickers, it does exist. And that's a free activity in Disney world too, for families.
[00:50:31] Speaker C: I love that. I love that. Well, what was. What was each of your favorite, favorite ports then? Between. I mean, let's count glacier day as a port day. But yeah, between the four, I'm putting air quotes. Port days.
[00:50:44] Speaker A: I think Skagway was my favorite. Just driving into the Yukon was just so calm and magical and not like having a little bit of a plan, but not too much of a plan. Was really nice to be flexible.
[00:50:55] Speaker D: Yeah. And I also enjoyed Skagway. It was a great family outing for us.
But being first time Alaska cruisers I would say our Glacier Day, it was a perfect, perfect mix. We saw all the characters at the beginning. Then we were able to go do an adults only activity, which was just a really wonderful break for my husband, and I love that.
[00:51:13] Speaker C: All right, well, let's jump back on board. You're on the Disney Magic. There's so many things to do.
What are, like, the top priorities and what were some of, like, the favorite things you guys got to do on board? By the way, I didn't know they did Palo brunch on Ketchikan Day, but I guess when you have a late arrival, that maybe that makes sense. I've only, you know, known of them doing it on sea days, except for where is it in NASA sometimes. Some cruises that go to Nassau, they will occasionally do Palo brunch on those days. So, yeah, Tell us, Corey, we'll start with you. What were some of, like, the must dos and what were some of the
[00:51:48] Speaker A: favorites, Ironically, on this trip? It's the first cruise my husband's been in in a while, and so I was like, I have spent 21 odd days on the Wonder and the Magic, and I've never been into the adults area. So I'm like, I am getting into the adults area area. And I did. We did a lot of adult pool deck. I never went into, like, the bar area ever, at all. And I'm like, that was my one goal. We didn't do it.
Our weather was just so nice that usually after we were done with whatever activity, my husband would take my son to take a little rest, and then the two of us would meet on the adult pool deck hot tub layout. And I'm like, it was plenty warm for us because we're from this area.
It was very empty, which was nice because I don't think it was warm enough for a lot of other people.
But on our last sea day, I actually got, like, a small sunburn because I was like, it's 65, 70 degrees. There's no way. The sun was very bright.
So that was.
That was kind of my, like, big thing. I just wanted to have a really relaxing cruise, which it was probably one of my favorite cruises just because the vibes were great, was very relaxing. There was nothing on the boat that I felt like I had to do again.
We usually go see all the stage shows. I did skip believe this time because maybe not my favorite, but that's one of our favorite things to do as well. And I love Rapunzel show.
[00:53:09] Speaker C: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, Tangled is such a good. It's such a good production. I'm crossing my fingers because I'm really hoping that it's going to be on the Believe.
I think that that would be like just a winner. Right? Because I'm sure there'll be a new show. But as a repeat show, that's the one that I'm hop. Hoping that they'll. They'll port over to the belief since it's only on the magic. Lindsay, what about you? What were some of the kind of, were there goals that you had as to things you wanted to do and what were some of the favorite things that you got to do on board?
[00:53:43] Speaker A: Sure.
[00:53:44] Speaker D: Yeah. This was kind of an interesting experience because my children were a little bit older, so they were into things like they wanted to do trivia or bingo. Like, so things that we'd never really done on Disney Cruise Line before.
So we did some of those family kind of oriented activities.
We also hadn't ever seen the Rapunzel show, so that was kind of. I knew for sure we wanted to be able to have a good seat for that.
But yeah, I didn't really have too many goals, I think, you know, just enjoy my time with my family. And we did get to relax in the adult area, which was a real treat.
[00:54:21] Speaker C: Now, how did the kids do with the kids club? How, how like with the. The seven year olds probably. Well, I'm thinking I feel like that's kind of the perfect kids club age. But I'm curious, like they had been on, you know, Disney ships before, so this wasn't their first time experiencing a kids club. But yeah, how did they do there?
[00:54:39] Speaker A: Yeah. So my son is 3, so he's in that window where he could do nursery or kids club. Since the twins are doing kids club. He always says, like, I need to go to Alexander's favorite kids club. He doesn't want to do the.
He is fully potty trained, but he is nervous.
So, gosh, this might have been his third cruise going to kids club. And usually I'm just really engaged with a cast member when I'm dropping off. I'm like, he's nervous. He won't use that little hand wash thing. Can someone just kind of, you know, get him where he needs to go? And he's still in that 3 and 4 group where they do kind of organized activities. But he's kind of figured it out now, like, okay, I get my hand wipe, I get my sticker on my back and then I stand here and someone comes for me. So mostly he's done. Okay. He would prefer to be with us. We've been lucky enough that he hasn't been in daycare and he's not started preschool yet. So he's not really used to being with a lot of strangers. The only time he's done that is on a Disney cruise.
So we just kind of try to prepare him. And then for things like Paulo or Paulo brunch, when we know we need to be gone, might say like, mom has to go to work, because that's something he understands. We're doing a little work. And then I come back and he, you know, they're really good at kind of keeping them engaged in kids club. This is the first time he did have a toileting accident. And mostly I think it was the sound in those bathrooms because the flush is very loud.
He got wrapped up in his plane and we happened to be picking him up, but they handled it really well, so. And I was nervous about sending him back, but they were great about taking him back. And, yeah, I think we're slowly getting there.
[00:56:19] Speaker C: Well, you know, I think that's a great point. Like, the younger kids, they, you know. Well, if your kid has any sensory sensitivities like ours has always had, he's always been afraid, actually, of all the toilets on board Disney Cruise Light. Now, he's probably going to be mortified that I'm saying this, but they're all of the toilets. The flush, it's very loud. And so oftentimes Nathan. I mean, Nathan will use the bathroom, but sometimes he'll want one of us to go in and flush after. Right. Because it is quite noisy. And when he was younger, that was even more extreme. Like, he. There were times where we had to convince him to go into the bathroom. He's thankfully grown out of that. But airplane bathrooms, he really doesn't. If he can avoid going on an airplane, he will avoid going on an airplane. No joke.
So I think that's a really, really good tip. Now, did they message you to say, hey, he had an accident, or did it just happen to coordinate with when you were picking him up?
[00:57:17] Speaker A: Anyway, we got the message as we were in line to pick him up, and I. It was something to the effect of like, Please return within 5 minutes or we will change your child. Like, I know they don't want to do that, but it was like, if you can't be here in a certain amount of time, we will change them for their comfort. But it just happened to line up that we were already there.
[00:57:35] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah. And it's. It's okay. If your kid has an accident, they will let you bring your kid back. It's not. And they actually do make exceptions for kids who are still in diapers. But they ask that you basically you. That you come and check on your kid every. I don't know if it's 45 minutes an hour, things like that. Because there are, of course, some older kids who are still not toilet trained or unable to be because of, you know, their circumstance. Lindsay, how did. How do your kids do in the kids club?
[00:58:05] Speaker D: My son is a little bit more outgoing and he loves kids clubs. Like, he will be the kid that wants to leave dinner early so he can, you know, go join kids club again.
He wants to say goodbye to all of his kids club friends, which are the cast members, by the way.
[00:58:19] Speaker C: Oh, I love that. He's like the king of the kids club. I love it.
[00:58:23] Speaker D: Yes. So he is all, all about it. My daughter, however, is a little bit more reserved and she's not into, like, a lot of screen stuff, so she's more of an art kind of creative play type of child at this moment.
[00:58:37] Speaker A: Moment.
[00:58:38] Speaker D: So some. Sometimes when we go on a cruise, I'll connect with other parents through our cruise group prior to that and maybe even do a quick video chat to lay the groundwork to build a friendship.
And then we might meet up with that friend at a kids club, which can really, I think, help with that transition. But yeah, for the most part, they enjoy them. They do so many wonderful activities.
So I would suggest to any parent, read your navigator app, you know, figure out when they're going to make stitch goo or they're going to do a character story time, any of that stuff, and then really sell it.
[00:59:13] Speaker C: Absolutely. Great tip. Nathan always enjoyed the area where you could just, like, color or draw. Like, that's always that. That there is an area in the kids club that is always, like, available during operation of the club where they can. If they don't want to be involved in whatever other activities or they don't want to play on the iPads or whatever else is going on. There's pretty much always a place where you can, like, color or draw. So if you had to have a creative kid, never fear, that's. That's. That's an option. All right, well, I got to ask about Paulo. You guys did brunch and dinner, right?
What night did you do dinner on and how did you kind of decide on when you were going to do that? Because I feel like that's always something to strategize about.
[00:59:58] Speaker A: Yeah, I think it was our fourth night now that I'm just thinking about rotational dining. And I was icy straight point night. You know, it's kind of hard when you're booking Paulo in advance because you don't know what rotation you're going to be on. And we wanted to do the frozen menu, which now that we've done it, I was like, ah, that probably would have been my Palo night because we missed first night of animators and it just happened to work out with the port times because some of the port times are really late getting back on board. So you have to take that into account.
[01:00:27] Speaker D: Account.
[01:00:28] Speaker A: And then we did catch a Can Apollo brunch, which was great.
[01:00:32] Speaker C: Yeah. Now, what dinner time did you do? Did you do early dinner or late dinner?
[01:00:37] Speaker A: We are hardcore late dinner people. I did early dinner once and hated it because it just feels like everything is so rushed. And if my son's gonna have a meltdown, I'd rather it be like at dinner where I can tuck him into a stroller, someone can take him back to the room because he does enjoy the shows. He just can't make it through a late show. So we did late dinner, which I think on Alaska makes sense because the port times are so late.
[01:01:00] Speaker C: That's amazing. I mean, I, I agree. And we're a hardcore late dinner people, but I'm amazed that your 3 year old is able to tolerate it. So that's like, that's awesome. If you could do it, I say do it. Especially in Alaska, because you're right, your day is kind of condensed. If you're, if you're rushing to get back for, for dinner. Right. If you're going to stay out at port and have dinner at port, because maybe you're, you know, all aboard time is late enough, that's fine. But then you're, you know, you've already paid for the dinner and the show
[01:01:28] Speaker D: and you're missing it.
[01:01:29] Speaker C: You know you're missing it. Yeah. Now I'm imagining. Oh, sorry, go ahead.
[01:01:33] Speaker A: The servers are usually very accommodating. Like if there's room, I'll ask and they'll let us bring the stroller back. Because he's usually good for the first part of dinner or at animators if there's something going on. But other than that, he'll start to fade and just be like, I'll just lay down in here, eat like some macaroni as he's laying in a stroller and that's fine. We have really low expectations.
[01:01:53] Speaker C: I love it. Now I'M imagining you guys all both have young kids, you know, seven is not. Seven is still young. They go to bed kind of early. I'm imagining you're not spending a lot of time in the late. Well, you're also pregnant, Corey, but like you're imagining you're not spending a lot of time in the, in the bar spaces for those evening adult only activities. Am I fair correct in that?
[01:02:18] Speaker A: Tucking in and watching a show and maybe ordering a room service snack if someone needs it.
[01:02:23] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah. And I listen. Alaska's long days. And I will say, say even Brian. And even though Nathan. Nathan actually stays out later than us, we go to, we're like in bed watching a movie, like ready in our jammies.
[01:02:37] Speaker B: We, we trick him, we keep him on Seattle schedule and then say you don't have to be back to the room until midnight, which is actually a half hour earlier than normal, than his normal bedtime.
[01:02:44] Speaker C: Well, but not in Alaska, Brian. Right? In Alaska. Oh no, in Alaska he was just time. He was just up. Yeah, we just let him stay up till like midnight every night, but we. Which meant we had to be up until midnight every night. Well, is there, there anything that we have missed in terms of, you know, things that you guys did on board or at port that we just haven't covered?
Anything, you know, odd that happened or surprising that happened? And then I gotta ask, of course, would you do Alaska again? Corey, you've done it like three times, so.
[01:03:14] Speaker A: Absolutely we would do Alaska again. It was just a very relaxing trip. The last Alaska cruise we did, it rained constantly. It was still nice, but like the constant rain was a lot, lot this trip we never pulled out our rain gear or we barely had to do any of our cold weather clothes. But we're kind of used to it being a Little Shilly, but 100% even just to be on the boat and have that Disney service while we're sailing by. All this beautiful scenery is absolutely worth it. I will say that it's not just scenic viewing on glacier day. Like you are sailing through so many beautiful areas. Even our sea day coming back, it's just gorgeous. So schedule time to just hang out on the pool deck, sit, have some coffee, watch. We saw most of our whales kind of going in and out of Alaska. Not so many in Alaska. So we had a ton of humpback whales and things like that.
You will.
[01:04:11] Speaker D: Oh yeah, we had a wonderful time. So in fact, when we were on the adult pool deck, I was like, can we just book another one?
[01:04:19] Speaker B: Yeah.
[01:04:20] Speaker C: Another Alaska cruise. Specifically, yes.
[01:04:23] Speaker D: Yeah. So I booked for August 10 on the Wonder.
So another last minute cruise.
[01:04:29] Speaker A: And wait, you're like.
[01:04:31] Speaker C: We're talking like. Like two weeks from now? Like, two and a half weeks from now?
Yeah. Wow.
[01:04:38] Speaker D: Yeah. So it'll just be me and then my twins. So I felt comfortable enough to be able to, you know, repeat. There are a few different port stops on this itinerary, but, yes, we had such a wonderful time. I was, you know, lucky enough to squeeze one in before everyone returns to school, so.
[01:04:55] Speaker C: Oh, my God.
[01:04:56] Speaker B: Now that I don't have to ask, what's next for you?
[01:04:58] Speaker C: Right? I mean, but, like, that just shows you, like, Alaska sells itself. And we're talking about. For people who live in the Pacific Northwest. I know that we had a. We had an episode way back in the catalog where our DCL villain was on the show, and he was talking about how, like, oh, for. I live. You know, he lives in Bellingham, so he lives north of us.
And he was talking about how a lot of the sites are things that you get to see when you live in the Pacific Northwest. And so as much as they're beautiful, he was like, oh, it's not that big of a deal. I can go hiking in my backyar. But I'm like, no, like, no joke. Like, I thought Alaska was the most magical place, like, in. On the planet. It was just so gorgeous. And we live in the Pacific Northwest. To be fair, we're not big. Like, we're not super outdoorsy. So we're not. I'm not going to all the places,
[01:05:42] Speaker B: but I can be outdoorsy. You just have no interest in going anywhere where a mosquito might find you.
[01:05:47] Speaker C: So appreciate that.
Yeah. And I don't sleep on the ground.
[01:05:54] Speaker A: Yeah, Alaska's special. And you get those incredible views again with, like, zero effort. You're just cruising by, someone's bringing you a drink. And so it's just a very easy way to enjoy all of that beauty, too.
[01:06:07] Speaker C: I love it. All right, Brian, is it that time?
[01:06:10] Speaker B: I guess we have reached that point in the show where Sam gets to ask you both some arbitrary questions, apply some arbitrary rules, and impose more than a dash of her judgment. Or the round we know is rapid fire. So, Sam, take it away.
[01:06:23] Speaker C: All right. You knew this was coming, you guys. I'm going to ask you some Disney favorites and then some Disney Cruise Line favorites. For Disney Cruise Line favorites, you can only answer with, like, a ship that you have been on. So even if you want to go on, I don't know, the adventure or the believe or whatnot. Let's confine ourselves to ship that. Ships that you've actually been on. Okay, we're going to start with your favorite Disney character. And by Disney, that means anything and everything that Disney owns, which is like almost all the IP in the world. So, Corey, we're going to start with you. Who's your favorite Disney character?
[01:06:56] Speaker A: Chippendale.
[01:06:57] Speaker C: Oh, yes. I love that you pick a duo. Awesome. All right, Lindsay.
[01:07:02] Speaker D: And I'm a Donald fan.
[01:07:03] Speaker C: Yeah, you and Brian. You and Brian.
Love it. All right, favorite Disney movie. And again, the. The rule. Disney means like everything and anything. Lindsay, we're starting with you for this one.
[01:07:18] Speaker D: I'll go with the childhood favorite, Sleeping Beauty. So that's also my daughter's favorite film as well.

[01:07:28] Speaker A: I'm gonna go with Parent Trap. Either version, but preferably Haley Mills.
[01:07:33] Speaker C: Oh, Haley Mills. For sure. It's gotta be Haley Mills. Not. Not. No, no shade to Lindsay Lohan. But Haley Mills is the original. Yeah. I love it. That's awesome. I. I have not thought about that movie in a long time, but I love that. Okay. Favorite Disney song. Corey.

And I don't think I asked you which ships you had been on, but this will help. Hopefully this will. I will. It will all be revealed. So, Lindsay, we'll start with you. Favorite Disney Cruise Line stage show.
[01:08:41] Speaker D: I'll go with Hercules because we just saw that on the Disney Destiny.
The music is top notch. The set and the production, everything's wonderful.
[01:08:51] Speaker C: So good. All right, Corey, we're. What about you?
[01:08:53] Speaker A: Hands down, Moana. It was incredible.
[01:08:57] Speaker C: I love it. You guys like flying colors here. We've got. All right. Okay, we're going to talk.
Favorite activity on board a Disney cruise. This could be like any of the organized activities or it could be like just sitting in Cove Cafe or At the pool or whatever. So, Corey, favorite activity on Disney Cruise
[01:09:17] Speaker A: Line after the main stage shows. Because I love the shows. It's probably just seeing characters with my son because he is character obsessed. So if we see someone, we have to see it. Even if it's like 10 o' clock at night. He's like, but Pluto. And my husband's like, yeah, we're going to bed. I'm like, no, but Pluto's right there. We'll just go see him real quick.
So it's just so magical. And I'm like, I don't know how long he's gonna love characters. So anytime. I'm like, yes.
[01:09:41] Speaker C: I love that. Not all. Listen, not all kids love characters. Some of them scream when they see the characters. But the ones who love the characters, it's the cutest thing to see. It's so adorable.
[01:09:50] Speaker A: I love that he is very afraid of Captain Hook and Smee on Pirate Night, like, to the point that he knows it's. And he's like, don't make me see Captain Hook. I'm like, I've never forced you to see him.
[01:10:00] Speaker C: Oh, will he see Jack Sparrow or. He probably doesn't even know.
[01:10:05] Speaker A: Yeah, it feels too adjacent.
[01:10:08] Speaker C: I think it's probably a good call. Not until he's older. He probably. Yeah, he'll probably associate, like, pirate as bad, Which, I mean, he's not wrong. So. Yeah. Yeah, maybe, like, if Peter Pan is around at some point. So Peter Pan and Tink used to sometimes be around on Pirate Night, but I haven't seen them now in several, several years. All right, Lindsay, favorite activity on a Disney cruise.
[01:10:30] Speaker D: Yeah, I'm gonna say probably just the water activities. Right. My kids love to experience a new slide, so of course I have to do all that with them. And it's kind of become a bucket list. They want to check off every slide, every, you know, new water feature.
[01:10:47] Speaker C: Well, that's a great segue, because I'm going to ask you. Aquadunk, Aqua, aquaduck, Aqua Mouse. And actually, have you, Lindsay, have you been on the Dream of the Fantasy?
[01:10:57] Speaker D: I have the dream, not the fantasy yet.
[01:11:00] Speaker C: Well, there you go. Okay, so you've got all three classes of water slide. So, Lindsay, which one is the best? Aquadunk, aquaduck, Aqua Mouse.
[01:11:09] Speaker D: I'll go Aqua Mouse. I think that is probably my favorite.
[01:11:13] Speaker C: All right, Corey, same question.
[01:11:15] Speaker A: Yeah, I won't do the Aqua Dunk, so I can't weigh in on that one. One. And I think the Aqua Duck is a better ride. But the setup for the aqua mouse makes it my favorite. I'm like, you come right back around. You can watch funnel vision.
So aquamouse.
[01:11:32] Speaker C: Yeah. And you can stay on. If there's nobody waiting in line, they'll let you stay on. You don't have to go back up the darn stairs again. So, yeah, I love it as a
[01:11:40] Speaker D: parent is you can ride or swap that if you need, because I often will be there solo with my two kids, and they'll allow me to swap.
[01:11:47] Speaker A: Swap out.
[01:11:48] Speaker C: Oh, very smart.
And oftentimes they won't let somebody go solo because of the way, like, if the wind is too high, then they won't let somebody. Well, kids under a certain age and height have to go with a parent anyway. But even there are times as an adult, they won't let you go single rider. It just depends on the weather conditions. And so if it's a little bit windy, but it's. Even if it's not too windy to close down the slide, but sometimes it's too windy to allow people to go single rider. And so, yeah, you can also swap out for that as well. All right, rotational dining.
What's your favorite rotational dining restaurant? Corey?
[01:12:25] Speaker A: Plaza de Coco, I think, is my favorite. Again, the vibes are just so good. The food's good, and it's just relaxing.
[01:12:33] Speaker C: I love it. Lindsay.
[01:12:34] Speaker D: I'll go with the new Lion King restaurant. Right. I think that's just such a. A novel experience. Granted, we've only done it twice in our rotational dining, but it was still. Still a wonderful experience.
[01:12:46] Speaker C: Love it. All right, you guys, I gotta ask. I love asking about food, so I have to ask. A favorite sweet item and a favorite savory item.
We'll start with the sweets. Lindsay, favorite sweet item on a Disney cruise.
[01:12:59] Speaker D: Any souffle?
Yes, that would be a sweet one. And our favorite among our family as well.
And I don't know if you have a good savory choice. We used to like the chateaubriand, but I think it's been moved off of menus.
[01:13:16] Speaker C: Yes, it's been moved off. Rest in peace, Chateaubriand. It's just a filet mignon, but it's a delicious one. Yeah. Okay, so no savory. How do you not have a favorite savory item? I mean, is like. Is there, like a taco or an empanada or something? Come on.
[01:13:31] Speaker D: I will say Donald's cantina was a big win. Yeah.
[01:13:35] Speaker A: So pool deck food.
[01:13:36] Speaker D: Nothing fancy, but a good, easy, customizable meal.
[01:13:40] Speaker B: Love it.
[01:13:41] Speaker C: All right, Corey, favorite sweet and then favorite savory.
[01:13:44] Speaker A: In general, I don't like Disney cruise desserts. I just don't think they're very good. But I am obsessed on the Wish class ships. They do those popsicle drinks. So the strawberry basil spritz, like, obsessed with it. And the last time we were on a Wish class, I was pregnant, and I was like, can I just have the popsicle, please? Like, some soda water so I can pretend.
So that's probably my favorite, like, sweet ish item.
And then savory. I'd say the Wagyu from Paulo Steakhouse with, like, an honorable mention for Pridelands Night 2 hummus, which sounds really random, but, like, I was so surprised by it that I'm still thinking about it. And how come we didn't order another one?
[01:14:23] Speaker C: I am so jealous because we have not eaten Pride Lands Night two menu yet. We're going to in December, but it's. That's many months away. It's only July.
But I. Okay, so now I know I have to order two orders of the hummus.
[01:14:37] Speaker A: We ordered one to share, and I was like, this was surprisingly good. We should have gotten another one.
[01:14:43] Speaker C: All right, well, I'm still dreaming about the. The shrimp curry from the Night One menu, so. And I will. I will probably forever dream about that. Okay.
The. Arguably the most important question of my rapid fire. Not the last question, but the most important question. Which one is your favorite ship? Corey will say start with you.
[01:15:02] Speaker A: I'd say the Treasure is our favorite, but I also go for, like, whatever has a longer itinerary, typically, so.
[01:15:09] Speaker C: Yeah, right. I'm a size 7 night plus Disney Cruise, too. All right, Lindsay, let's get real.
[01:15:15] Speaker B: Sam, you're like, a size 14 night now.
[01:15:17] Speaker C: I mean, I would take a size 14 night, but, like, I. I. We can't. We generally can't afford that. Not in our. Well, we can't afford that in our. Like, can't afford the vacation time, both our work schedules, and also Nathan's school schedule. That always seems to be an issue. And for any long itinerary. Linds, what. What about you? What's. What's the favorite ship in the fleet?
[01:15:36] Speaker D: I will answer with the Dream. I've been on it twice. Once as a family and once solo with my kids, so. They love that midship detective activity. I think it's, like, a good size in the middle.
I look forward to being able to go on the Treasure, but, yeah, right now, I'll go with the Dream.
[01:15:53] Speaker C: Yeah. I mean, and it also has Beauty and the Beast. On board, so you can't really go wrong. All, all of the ships are my favorite. No, that's not true. But I love them all for different reasons. All right, all right. Well, the last question, of course, of rapid fire is what is your bucket list cruise? And by that I mean someplace you haven't been. Someplace around the world accessible by water. It doesn't have to be even be someplace that Disney Cruise Line currently goes. But if you could go anywhere in the world on a Disney Cruise Line ship, where would you go? Lindsay, what's your bucket list itinerary?
[01:16:25] Speaker D: Oh, I think any European itinerary would be ideal for us.
Yeah, I don't really care. Any.
[01:16:33] Speaker A: Anywhere would be wonderful.
[01:16:35] Speaker C: Corey, what about you?
[01:16:37] Speaker A: I'm gonna make it like an extra long cruise. I'd love them to do more Croatian ports. So I'd like to start there, do some regular med ports, then go up and do Norway and then do the transatlantic. I want to be on the boat for like two months.
[01:16:51] Speaker C: Yeah, absolutely. I'll. We'll be there. I love that itinerary. Sign me up. Up throw maybe Iceland in there. If we could go to like St. Petersburg though, in Russia. I'd really love to, but obviously with things as they are geopolitically, that's not an option right now. But yeah, so many amazing places to go see. And then all the sea days at the end to just relax and do nothing and sit on the. Sit on the pool deck. Especially the adult pool deck. All right, you guys, A plus plus for both of you. Flying colors. I love all the answers. Special shout out to the parent trap. I mean, we don't hear that often, but thanks for playing.

[01:17:45] Speaker C: I know, I know. I just like to take over, you know, happy wife, happy life.
Corey, what's that's next?
[01:17:52] Speaker A: I am not sure yet. We're grounded now because I'm about to hit 24 weeks, so we can't sail, and then we won't be able to sail again until maybe six months old. So I've been trying to figure out when that will be, which is a little bit hard. And then plan something because I feel like the second that I'm able will get on Some kind of cruise.
[01:18:11] Speaker C: Yeah. And you've got to win Jack Jack's Diaper Dash. So you've got to, you got to start training the baby on, you know, the crawling stamina. Figure out what toys are going to be the right thing to do. Right? So, like, I mean, you know, as soon as they, as soon as they start looking like they're ready to crawl, you got to, you got to start training program. Yeah. Training program. And book it.
[01:18:32] Speaker A: Our son was an incredible crawler. He was a little bit of a late walker, so his crawling was so good. I'm sure this baby will just be like, no, I'm good.
[01:18:41] Speaker C: This baby will be like deuces. I'm here to lay down. I'm not interested in that crawling. Well, you guys, thank you so much for joining us.
