Show Notes

Rob and Amy are back, this time with their friends Ann and Matt and five kids between them, for a 5-night Disney Fantasy sailing with two stops at Castaway Cay and one at Lookout Cay. They talk through the planning trade-offs, a Palo Prima Notte that won over a non-drinker, cruising with celiac, and why comparing the two private islands misses the point.

In this episode:

  • How a surprise placeholder discount and the “fifth person tax” steered two families from the Treasure to the Fantasy
  • Pairing the cruise with a DVC stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge, plus a night at Shades of Green
  • Palo’s Prima Notte with zero-proof pairings, and why the Palo team rose to the challenge
  • Why Ann chose an all-Disney-island itinerary to manage celiac, and how the gluten-free dining held up
  • Castaway Cay vs. Lookout Cay, three island days in a row, and passing on a cabana
  • Edge, Vibe, and Oceaneer Club, the Aladdin show, and a late-night karaoke duet

“Castaway Cay is kind of like Disneyland from the 50s, right? And then... Lighthouse Point is Epcot in the height of Epcot times.” — Rob

[00:00:00] Speaker A: But just being out on the ship, middle of the ocean, seeing the moonlight, right, feeling the wind, being there with your kid, that's, that's, that's a cool thing. And I will keep doing that until I can't stay awake anymore. [00:00:24] Speaker B: Welcome back, everybody, to this week's episode of the DCL Duo podcast, brought to you by. We do travel, right? Remember, life is short. Take the trip if let the folks over it. We do travel, right? Handle the planning so you can focus on the relaxing. Sam, we are going to skip listener review today because I can't recall the last one we read. I need to go back to the scoreboard here and take a look at the audio to figure out where we left off. So I'm going to throw it over to you just to introduce our guests and our topic for today. We can dive right in. [00:00:52] Speaker C: All right, well, I'm excited because we've got two pairs of guests with us, one set of returning guests, one set of new guests to the show. They all cruise together on the Disney Fantasy at the end of July, beginning of August. Super excited to welcome first back to the show. Robin, Amy, welcome back, guys. [00:01:10] Speaker D: Hi. [00:01:11] Speaker A: Hi. Thanks. [00:01:12] Speaker C: Wonderful to see you all again. Your episode, as we chatted about earlier, is one of my very favorites. We talked all about Marvel Day at Sea and we covered a wonderful resort that you guys raved about that I feel like so many of our listeners have gone to now. Nachi Kochom in Cozumel and just, yeah, it's just a great episode. We're so happy to have you back. And then I'm excited to also welcome for the first time your friends Anne and Matt. Welcome, guys. [00:01:40] Speaker E: Sounds good. Thank you. [00:01:42] Speaker C: All right, well, before we dive into talking about your amazing cruise on the Disney Fantasy, let's get folks a reminder, Rob and Amy of your Disney background, your Cruising background. And then we'll turn it over to Ann and Matt to hear about their Disney backgrounds. [00:01:58] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. So thanks. So this is cruise number nine for us, right? So we are working our way to platinum. Last time I think we were only on three, right? So free Paulo. I can smell it right now. And so we got into cruising not that long ago, about 2022, with our first sailing on the Disney Fantasy, which was a Western Caribbean six nighter. And so it did the normal six night itinerary with the exception of Jamaica. So that's where we learned about Nachi Kokom, the number of hours I researched what you do because I didn't know what to do and I am I going to get sick. Right. I was always afraid of cruising. But you know, my background with Disney went back to the 80s and the 90s and my family used to do the old Gold Key program. Right. So you had the hotel, you had the dining. And I mean like, not the dining plan like it is today. It was three sit down courses three times a day. And for a little kid, like, that was a lot of fun. [00:02:58] Speaker C: Lots of food. Yeah, yeah. [00:03:00] Speaker A: And I was kind of, I guess I was a picky eater then. I don't know if it's just Disney food I didn't like, but. But yeah, we used to do that. And I just remember like the service, like it's one memory that I have is at the Cape May Cafe at the Beach Club. They used to have a lobster night as part of their, like all, you know, the menu that they had there. And I remember the servers cracking like a whole lobster cracking them for my parents. And I'm just like, you can't even get a lobster nowadays in the parks. [00:03:32] Speaker E: Right. [00:03:33] Speaker A: So, yeah, so. And when we went on Disney Cruise Line, I had heard a lot of that service and that magic, that old style. Disney is still there. And it absolutely is. It still is to this day. And so that's how we got into it. I got hooked. I'm counting the days in between Disney. We're also Disney Vacation club members. Right. I might have gotten into some trouble on this cruise. We'll talk about that later. But it goes deep with me. My wife does enjoy it, Amy does enjoy it, but she really loves the merch. That's why she's so. [00:04:03] Speaker D: I, I can't lie about that. [00:04:04] Speaker E: It's true. [00:04:04] Speaker D: But, but no, I started out going much, much less than, than Rob's family did. We went a handful of times, would stay like in the area and go to the park for a day. We never, we never did a whole trip that was just like an add on to the beach trip we would take. So it was just way less than his family. But then when we got together, we started going before kids. And then, you know, now with our kids we go so many times. People are always like, how are you always going there? Like, I don't know, you're like. [00:04:32] Speaker C: My husband converted me to his bougie Disney ways. I can't help it. [00:04:37] Speaker D: Absolutely. [00:04:38] Speaker C: He enticed me with the merchandise and now I'm home. [00:04:41] Speaker D: But the, the cruises though, the one we, the very first one we took, we called it a test cruise at the time because he was afraid he would get seasick I wanted to try it. He didn't. So we're like, let's see. And then now, you know, less than four years later, we're at number nine. So it was. It. It was a positive. It was a good test. [00:04:58] Speaker C: Yeah. I mean, if not for Cruising, we wouldn't have met, like, half of the people that we've met. We met you guys on the Star Cruiser. Different kind of cruise, but, you know, that's. May she rest in pieces. All right, well, I'm glad you brought your friends along for this cruise. So let's turn it. I'll start with Ann. Ann, tell us your Disney background and how you got started with Cruising on Disney. [00:05:22] Speaker D: Sure. [00:05:23] Speaker E: So it's not nearly as developed as Amy and Rob. However, we were kids of the 80s and 90s, so we grew up with all the best animations and by heart. And my mom recorded them, and we got to watch them over and over and over. Knew them word by word. We didn't know much about any parks existing and such until the Tower of Terror came out. And the commercials were all over television for that. And we took a trip in about late 90s. It was my brother's birthday. It was the middle of July and extremely hot. We were in Clearwater beach, and my parents surprised us with a drive towards Orlando. We had the big map in the car, and we drove over there. And they took me to, like, the little spot that said Disney World tickets here. And I picked out the MGM studios at the time, and I wanted to ride the big ride that had the movie with Kirsten Dunst. And they gave us the map. We went in, and I caught my parents for their first and only roller coaster ride here in America. It was amazing. And we did the parades, we did some of the snacks. It was really, really cool. It was our only trip until a couple years ago. And we had tried taking Amy and Rob on all of our cruises in the past that were not Disney cruises. Back at work, someone was like, over 20 years ago, hey, you know, you should go on this Carnival trip. It's like $600 at the time. Like, okay, yeah, why not? So we did a couple of those and really enjoyed them. By a couple, I mean, like seven. But it was before kids. Yeah, it was fun. But then we stopped. We had kids, and those cruise lines just weren't really what we were feeling at the time. And then a couple of years ago, we thought we should really take the kids to Disney World for one time. And I called up the travel agent, got everything scheduled, and Then I really flipped out. And Matt can speak to how anxiety ridden I was. A 10 year old boy is just going to detest Magic Kingdom. His sisters are into the princesses and how am I going to take them here? Calden almost canceled it, but it was too late. Amy sent me a whole thing of being able to do this and this and this is what Jonathan was like. And we went and we loved it so much. We added on another day to our week trip and now we three or four Disney World trips and a Disneyland trip and our second cruise in the books and dvc. [00:08:15] Speaker C: Wow. [00:08:15] Speaker E: Thank you, Rob and Amy. [00:08:17] Speaker C: Thank you, Rob and Amy. The best friends, our Disney friends and especially Disney cruise friends. Matt, have you always been a Disney fan? I see you're wearing, I mean, you're representing with your Radiator Springs. [00:08:29] Speaker F: Of course. Of course. So my history with Disney has been kind of similar to Anne's. My parents had the Disney classics and that's kind of what we grew up watching. Never been to any of the parks. So I would, I guess I would consider myself a Disney adult. I guess. I don't know. So. But my first time to Disney World was taking our kids and that's, I think, where the magic actually happened because I got to see my kids [00:09:00] Speaker D: just [00:09:01] Speaker F: become in love with going to Disney and enjoying the parks and seeing the characters and, you know, all those things that you get to have fun doing at the parks and they just love it and I love seeing that. So I think that just kind of brought it all together and now we can't stop going. [00:09:19] Speaker C: It does bring it to a different level, I think, like being a Disney kid yourself and then having a Disney kid, right, like, it's just a different experience and it kind of brings the whole, the whole nostalgia kind of full circle. And you, you can really, I think as a parent you can appreciate exactly what Walt was doing with his idea in the first place that you can't maybe appreciate when, when you're a kid experiencing yourself, even though you know as much as you love it. Well, let's, let's talk about cruising. What, what made this itinerary, you know, speak to you? What was it that? Was it just like the dates, did it just work? Was the price right? Was the, you know, the, where it sailed out of? Like, what was the thing that had you, you all booking this cruise together? I'll start with with Rob since I know he's the planner. [00:10:09] Speaker A: Yeah, I kind of took charge on a lot of the plans, so hopefully I did okay. We were Trying to triangulate something that hit the sweet spot of don't have to take the kids out of school and the teacher, right. So don't have to take her out of school. And then Matt's work kind of has a blackout that he can't travel in from, you know, late fall into throughout winter and until spring. So like we were trying to hit those three things and we were trying our hardest to get us under the treasure. We were trying so hard, like that's what we were trying to do. You know, I'm a sucker for a seven night itinerary, right? And just there's something about Disney Cruise Line that when you have a fifth person that it's, it's. There's tax that happens. And so we just. The numbers were just a little bit too much, right. So. And then I, I happened to find a couple of things happened which feel like they were like a sign, right. All of a sudden placeholders weren't 10% off, they were 20% off or they were 25% off. And so this one, I looked at it like possibly three times because. And we got to figure out what the terminology is. So it. This itinerary went two stops to cast away, one stop to look out. [00:11:17] Speaker C: I know this is a duo double dip. [00:11:19] Speaker A: Is that. We call it duo double. Not double duo. [00:11:22] Speaker C: Correct. Duo. Just meaning you went to the two islands, double meaning you went to one of them twice. [00:11:29] Speaker B: Got it. [00:11:29] Speaker A: Okay. [00:11:30] Speaker C: And we are calling it that whether it's two stops at Castaway, one stop at Lookout, or two stops at Lookout, one stop at Castaway, the duo double dip. That's our, that's our. [00:11:39] Speaker A: There we go. Okay, I'll use it correctly. I was using it before. [00:11:42] Speaker C: I'm gonna, you know, put a little TM on that. [00:11:47] Speaker A: There you go. So we found this one. I said there's no way, there's no way that a double dip is in the, you know, because not every sailing eligible for the added discounts. And so I said, guys, I think it's a mistake. We need to book it before DCL catches on. So, so we sat there and the only bummer was it was five nights. Right? Which I've learned that that's not enough. Right. It just isn't enough. And I don't know how it's not enough, but it's not enough. But anyway, so we said, well, what if we paired it with, you know, because they hadn't, they had never stayed in the DVC resorts yet and we had just done a stay last year where we went to Animal Kingdom Lodge and oh my goodness, that is just such an incredible experience. We said what if we go there for a little bit? So it's like we ended up doing about a 10 day trip end to end. Right. And so that's how we found this itinerary. It was, the itinerary is where it was going. I've always wanted to do a back to back. I've wanted to get back onto the fantasy and we wanted to make sure we did a ship that they had done the dream in the past. And so even though the fantasy, the sister. Right. It was still a new ship, it was a new experience and we thought the, the kids would, would really enjoy it. That plus the private island. So that's how we found it. I don't know if you guys want to add anything. [00:12:57] Speaker C: All right, well, I love that. Tell, tell us how, how old are all of the kids and how old are your kids? [00:13:04] Speaker E: So I have a 14 year old and 12 year old girls. So 14 year old boy and 12 year old twice. [00:13:12] Speaker C: All right. And Rob and Amy, how old are your kids now? [00:13:16] Speaker A: So our oldest, Lucas is 10. He's going to be 11 really soon, which is very sad for us. I know that Anna, Matt probably have this harder than we do, but so. And then our youngest is seven, going to be eight and he is this. On this cruise. He was exactly the age that Lucas was on the first cruise. So it was very much a full circle moment for us. [00:13:39] Speaker C: Yeah. Well. And so we, we have kids in all of the clubs technically. I mean the 14 year old could go to either or edge. The 12 year olds are obviously in Edge. And then you've got. Your oldest could be in, in Edge or kids club. And then your youngest is in kids club. So depending on. Yeah, depending on waivers and all of that. Okay. So super fun. You all live in the St. Louis area. How. So you guys were going down to, to Florida well in advance. Did you do the parks sort of day first? Okay. [00:14:14] Speaker A: And in a man actually live outside of Chicago. [00:14:17] Speaker C: Oh, okay. [00:14:17] Speaker A: We were meeting down in Orlando and so we both flew out. And that's another thing trying to coordinate everyone coming to the same place at once. And then we all get the same like secret idea with one another. We said, you know what, we don't want to come in the day that we have to check in. We want to come in the day before we check in. Right. Because then we get the whole day of our check to do stuff. So we all like secretly had this plan and then eventually, like we're hanging out, we go, yeah, we're going to fly in the night before. And, and, and we don't know where we're staying yet, but flying the night before, we said, okay, well, since they're all coming in. So this is the really great benefit that my family has is my mom is retired military and we've gotten to stay at Shades of Green a lot. And so we had, we had had her set up reservation there that we all stayed at for a night to come in before stay at Animal Kingdom Live. So all of us stayed at Shades of Green, which is so fun because we got to introduce, you know, Animat's family and their kids to Shades of Green, which some, not everyone gets to do. It's a, it's a very great relaxing resort and just, just a cool experience to be able to share with others. [00:15:24] Speaker C: Yeah, I have never stayed there. My, my dad was in the Air Force, so I feel like I, he, he was honorably discharged. I feel like I should be able to get a reservation there. I just have never even thought about it. So maybe, maybe I need to look into that though. I love that idea. All right, well, how did you all get to, to the port from Animal Kingdom Lodge? Did you take Disney transportation? Did you book private transportation? Like, what was the plan? [00:15:50] Speaker A: So we did Disney transportation. And I'll, I'll say this. Even though it costs more than any other option out there, I have told myself it is the lightning lane of Disney Cruise Line for boarding. You just, you just hit the pay for it and you go, I'm just going to get on the ship earlier and that's just what I'm going to do. So, so we did that. Right. And it picks up over at Jambo House when you're staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge. For anyone who does this. We stayed at Kidani Village because we really like the, just the vibe and the relaxing scene there. So you gotta get up a little bit early, take the, you know, the inter resort shuttle across and then you meet in the Jumbo House, you know, the big, the big atrium there. And it's great, right? We've done this for the second time, doing it from Walt Disney World. We also have done it from the Hyatt. My family has. They're both, they're both great. I liked, I would say I like the Jumbo House a little bit more because there's just less people lining up for it, whereas the, the Hyatt is more of like a concentration of a lot of folks that came and stayed at the airport, but both are great. And I just. I like getting on the ship a lot. I know there's a lot in the community that are like, no go later, no lines, no crowds. Don't worry about it. I want to get on that ship and I'm gonna go. I'm gonna get that empanada. So that's. [00:17:05] Speaker C: Yeah, I want those. I want the empanada, and I want. If I' Classic ship. I want that cheesecake. That Oreo cheesecake. Yeah, yeah. So, no, I'm with you. Get on early. I'm. I mean, you've paid for the whole day, right? That's one of the days in your cruise, so. Yeah. And get the whole. The whole day out of it. All right, well, let's turn a little bit to the planning side. I'm going to throw this over to Matt. Matt, were there any things that you were like, we really want to book in advance that you're going to cast away and look out. So you absolutely do do not have to book anything in terms of excursions on the private island. Course you can if you want to. And then there are, of course, you know, adult dining, drink tastings, those kind of onboard experiences. Was there anything that you guys were hoping to book and make sure you got, you know, done sort of in advance of the cruise? [00:17:57] Speaker F: So there was a couple of things. Our daughter Charlotte and Caroline both wanted to do the royal gathering. So that took some planning between Ann and Rob together, trying to get that to happen. It was a little stressful because I think it was a late night trying to get it booked, so. But we got it, and they got the royal gathering. And the other few things was Palo. I know that we wanted to make sure that we get the chance to get to Palo, do that. And also a prima note, which we haven't done yet. Well, not until this trip. And Rob and Amy spoke so highly of it, so we're like, we gotta try it. So we got that also during this trip. [00:18:44] Speaker C: Yeah. You gotta be up at your booking window at midnight for all those things. For Royal Gathering, it's even a later booking window. So you've gotta be up again at midnight. Yeah. Just staying up late and making sure you're kind of on top of it. And so it sounds like you got everything you wanted ahead of time, or did you have to sort of deal with some of those things once you were on board? [00:19:05] Speaker A: We had one thing, and it was of our own doing. Right. So we decided. We originally had main dining, which we've Never done before. And to this day we still haven't because we last minute decided we don't want to feel at all rushed going off the private island. So we switched about a week out to second dining, which means we had to flip prima note from the. I think we were in the 8:30. We had to flip it to like the 6, 6:45 or whatever it is. And so that one, it was the funniest thing. I can only get one of us back in. And I said, well, at least if we have one, I think the tables are always two. And I could probably go talk to them. The Palo people are so nice. And so when we did get on board, I went straight down. It's, you know, it's down near in Chandangara. And went straight down and sat down and said, hey, can we just add the rest of us onto priminote? And they were like, absolutely, no worries. But it was funny because. So prima notes, you may may know for folks listening, it's kind of a wine tasting with food pairing. And Matt doesn't drink. And I told and has. Has gluten allergies with celiac. So we were going to have to make some accommodations. When I asked the priminote folks, they said, hey, we have someone who doesn't drink. Like are they going to enjoy it? You kind of know how the Paulo people are. They are hardwired to never disappoint you. Right? Like it will crush their soul if they at all feel that they've had anyway disappointed you. And I think it was the manager. I can't remember her name, but she looked at me, she said he should not come. [00:20:39] Speaker F: He should not. [00:20:40] Speaker A: And it's princess. So I. I would. And I said, when do I need to make the decision by? Because it was just me there. And they said, well, come by around 5 and we can take you off. And if you decide not to do it, Matt is an absolute trooper. He said, I'm gonna see how this goes. Like, I want to try this food. I'm gonna see how it goes. And Matt, I'll turn it over to you. I don't think they could have done a better job. They knocked it out of the park for you. And it was. It was really great. [00:21:06] Speaker F: Yes, absolutely. We didn't know what to expect, so. And I can't speak any high. It was great. It was great. The drinks were just amazing. I didn't know what they were going to pair the food with. So whatever they came up with, it was right there in the moment. And they they really did knock it out of the park because the drinks were fantastic. [00:21:29] Speaker C: Awesome. Now, did they do like zero proof cocktails kind of a thing? Yeah, yeah. I've heard. We've heard from some other folks in the same circumstances. The folks who just who don't drink alcohol. [00:21:41] Speaker D: They. [00:21:41] Speaker C: If you tell them in advance, they can come up with something. I mean, I've even heard of people doing like a water tasting. Like that's an option because there's lots of different water. [00:21:49] Speaker B: That was like. That was Lynn. Lynn. Tessa went in and was like, you got a water menu? Give me a water taste. [00:21:55] Speaker C: Yeah, that was in Remy or Enchante, I think. But anyway. Yeah, but you can. They will do stuff that's different. I mean, you still gonna probably pay the same price as what you paid. [00:22:04] Speaker D: Right? [00:22:05] Speaker C: But. But that's fine. I mean, they're frankly doing more creative stuff with the zero proof cocktails than just opening a bottle of wine. [00:22:12] Speaker B: Well, but I want to hear the review of the zero proof cocktails. [00:22:14] Speaker D: Yes. [00:22:14] Speaker C: He said they were great. He said it was fantastic. [00:22:16] Speaker B: But like, what. Give. Give us a sense of like what they were bringing you. [00:22:19] Speaker A: Yeah. So there was. We've got it written down. It's Vero. I'm going to get these names wrong because I accent so Italiano. [00:22:27] Speaker G: Vero. [00:22:27] Speaker A: I think that was the, like the floral, lighter, refreshing one. [00:22:32] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:22:32] Speaker A: There was Dolce Vita Manhattan. So a zero proof Manhattan, which I tasted and other than not feeling any burn as I drank, it tasted exactly like Manhattan as I was expected. Oh, gosh. Il conte negrone without alcohol. That was with the steak. Again, excellent. And then the cafe caramel was the dessert one. Espresso was the espresso Martin, which was fantastic. [00:23:00] Speaker C: I love an espresso Martin. [00:23:01] Speaker D: They were also pretty. [00:23:02] Speaker A: I can say they were. And they were big. And it was just. I was sort of jealous, but also not jealous. I just was so happy that they did such a fantastic job and they just rose to the challenge. [00:23:15] Speaker C: And how did they do with the food side of things with your gluten allergy? [00:23:21] Speaker E: So they did. They did really well. I want to add to Matt's though, before we go on, you know, going na. And going into a regular restaurant, putting off to the side the whole celiac thing. It's very difficult to have anything other than like a Heineken 0 if you go to a restaurant. So that's what he's used to. And we try the different things at Benny's. You know, we live in a very large populated area with many Things right at our fingertips and we can't ever replicate anything that would come close to what he used to enjoy. So I think that that man hat and just knocked the socks off. And then Rob and Amy tried it. I didn't want to try that with celiac. Not sure what was in there, but at least one of the other drinks, the refreshing one, it was, was better than what the rest of us had. So that was, that was pretty cool. But the celiac, they did an amazing job. And one of the reasons why we chose this itinerary, at least on our end, is I don't have to worry about what we eat. So if I get off on Jamaica's port or anywhere else, honestly, I always have to double check or I'm going to stick with some very easy corn tortilla chips and salsa and not go anywhere else because I don't want a chance ruining the entire vacation. So I knew that if I stuck with just the Disney Islands, that would be a relaxing vacation that would most likely be successful. There's always some give or takes or cross contamination. But what they did for me, a prima note at Paloma. The tuna was amazing. The steak was amazing. We always compared our plates to see, like, all right, we're comparing our drinks and now we're comparing our plates too. And then we got pictures of all that. For the most part, they're pretty similar. And I think that that goes for Disney, simplifying the process for the number of allergies that they see every day there. [00:25:32] Speaker D: I think I was surprised by that because, like, I kind of expected you to get something different when pretty much everything was exactly the same, just a slightly different variation. [00:25:40] Speaker C: All right, well, let's. I want to jump into embarkation day. Obviously. Prima note, we kind of jumped ahead. It was embarcation day because prima note means first night in Italian. It's always held on the first night of the cruise. But how did the, you know, check in process go at the port? And obviously the Disney transfer process go? Was everything sort of smooth sailing. And about what time did you guys get onto the ship? I'll throw this one to Amy. [00:26:06] Speaker D: I'm trying to remember it. This one was the smoothest one of all of them. Like I. We got, we got to Jumbo House. Yeah. And I think we were there a half hour, maybe. Got on the bus, had a real quick ride there. I don't think there was traffic. We didn't slow down on the road. But then they gave us a sticker this time. We'd never had that before we're like, you didn't have to. We didn't wait in lines when we got inside. It was just like up and in line, basically and on. And I don't know why it was different this time, but it was. [00:26:33] Speaker A: They did the actual check in part where they scan your bands and stuff. They did that up where you would go if you had a problem after you were up in the port. It was very similar to the Hyatt experience. But they do that check in at the Hyatt. But no, they would take us up like near where you would check if there was upgrades for concierge and stuff. They did a check in actually there. And I remember when they took us through that line, I was like looking at everyone said, we're in the wrong line. We're in the wrong line. I don't know what's going to happen. We' in uncharted territory. [00:27:03] Speaker C: Yeah. Because they took you past the kind of little booths or desks, I should say. And they take you up to like the full desks right upstairs, which, which does, I mean, probably expedites your process a little bit because you're not in the longer lines of everybody else checking in. About what time would you say you got onto the ship, do you think? [00:27:23] Speaker A: It might have been 11? I think it was like 11:30. But also we, we're, we're such rookies at heart, I guess I would say we always have to go take the picture. Which hot tip for everyone. You don't have to wait for your boarding group to take your picture. You can just walk by the queue and go get your picture out of the way so that when they call your boarding group, like then you go in through the queue. [00:27:44] Speaker C: So, yes, we always, as soon as we get through check in, we go take our picture. And then that way, whenever they. And that might be like 20 minutes before they start boarding. Anybody? Yeah, just go get the picture done. A lot of people wait until they're actually boarding and. And then a line of course develops. Oh, we've got a dog joining us. [00:28:01] Speaker D: I love that. I love that you would love to say a lot. [00:28:04] Speaker C: I love it. I love, you know, I love a dog. So it's, it's perfect to join us. All right, well, let's dive in. Of course, you know, boarded the beautiful Disney Fantasy. Ann and Matt, you'd been on the Disney Dream, but not the Disney Fantasy, of course, their sister ships, very similar but slightly different decor. Did you enjoy the welcome aboard greeting, Anne? [00:28:27] Speaker E: Yeah, we loved it. We had the Most amazing cast member right there at the. The doors, the gates. I'm not sure what to call it. All five of our children had their own favorite stuffies with them. And my girls at least really wanted them to also be introduced. [00:28:48] Speaker C: I love that. [00:28:49] Speaker E: And the names, you know, God bless them, were a little complicated for the cast member. So she went through a couple of renditions of trying and she was so patient, so kind. And she finally got it and did it perfectly and we went on and it's just the most beautiful ship. I mean, mind you, I haven't been on the Wish class ships, but I am truly not disappointed because it's just regal and beautiful. The colors, the patterns, the textures, just. And it was a beautiful day. So the sunshine going in, I couldn't have asked for anything better. [00:29:26] Speaker C: Oh, I love that. I will say I love the boarding with the stuffy because our son Nathan always boards with Bear Bear. His stuffy Bear Bear has been on all of the Disney Cruise Line ships except for the adventure. We have not been to Singapore, but Bear Bear is a very well traveled bear. So I understand the stuffies that travel. All right, well, Matt, what's the first course of business when you guys get on? I know Rob was running to deal with the PA Minote. Get that all fixed. Where were you guys off to? Were you like heading straight for sit down lunch, I'm assuming, because I know Rob mentioned empanadas. Or were you or did you have any other, you know, business that needed to be taken care of before lunch? [00:30:09] Speaker F: No, it was lunch at first. First. First line of business was lunch. And I don't think on the dream we did lunch. I don't think. No. So this was kind of new to us too. Especially like a sit down lunch. We were thinking maybe we would go ban us. But no, this was a sit down lunch. So this was different for us, which was great. And I think we'll do that again because it worked out really well. It gave us kind of a chance to sit down, relax, take a breath, you know, we got there, we're on the ship, we got in a little early, we're happy. Now let's get some food in our bellies and let's. Let's get onto the ship and enjoy it. [00:30:48] Speaker C: And then you take out your phone and everybody's on their app hearting all the activities in the app to figure out what, what are we going to do? What's our schedule of activities for the rest of the day? Yeah, you do that right in Animator's palette On the dream and the fantasy. Unless you're sailing concierge and then you'd be in Royal Court or Royal palace for sit down lunch. But I love that first lunch in Animators and. Yeah. How was the cheesecake, Amy? [00:31:14] Speaker D: Oh, it was perfect. [00:31:15] Speaker E: I love it. [00:31:17] Speaker D: I laugh. I really like cabanas. I like the, the amount of food that they offer and the options. It's so great. But like for us, at least for me, when you have kids, I hate having to get them sat down and go back and forth. So like I am team sit down all the time. Like let's just do that. It's so much calmer, you know, after the chaos of the morning usually. [00:31:35] Speaker C: Yeah, well. And that 10 year old can probably go get his own food, but your 7 year old is not getting his own food. You know that you're the one getting the seven year old's food and then you go back up and get your own food if you're at, if you're at a buffet. Absolutely. Well, let's, so let's, let's jump over to the private islands. Since you guys had three days at the private islands, did you book anything in terms of excursions or, you know, cabanas or anything on, on that activity list? [00:32:06] Speaker A: Rob, Sam, you're going to laugh at us. We got a cabana. It was one of those moments that I literally was like picking up the groceries and I'm in the, you know, the little lane waiting for the person to come out. And I checked the app and I'm like, oh my gosh, there's a cabana. And then I checked both days and I think it's because the Mickey Minnie cabanas are now there at Castaway. So it's like opened up a lot more. And I checked the next day. I was like, oh my gosh, there's another one. So, so we grabbed the cabana for both of our castaway days. But then the frugal side of all of us was like, do we really need a cabana? Do we, do we like where it is? We've never even been up to Serenity Bay. Do we want to take another tram to get there? We weren't sure if a golf cart was going to take us and we just said, you know what, I don't think we'll miss it. Maybe we'll save that for another time. So I feel like opportunity lost, but also. [00:32:59] Speaker C: But money. Money gained. [00:33:01] Speaker A: Yeah, money gained. [00:33:03] Speaker B: I will just jump in here really quick to say I do think your case is one where a Cabana can make a ton of sense if you're traveling with a group and the cost can get spread out. Like, for a family of three like ours, it makes almost no sense. It is just a luxury item. But for a larger group, you know, you guys then have like, a dedicated place to hang out and all that sort of stuff. I totally get you, though, because the other thing I was going to say is I think part of the reason for all of the cabana availability is not just that they've built more, but they have really amped up the pricing for the cabanas, and they have not really amped up the benefits associated with it. And so they're charging a lot of money for those things right now. And I think that's causing a lot of people even in concierge to say, you know, this just isn't. It's not worth it anymore. It was, you know, when it's five, six, seven, maybe even $800 for cabana, but when you get up into 900, a thousand or more, like, it's. It's starting to get a little. A little outrageous. Especially when you compare it to other cruise lines where you get the. You get your lunch in your cabana. You know, the drink service is always there and on time. So we. We've had experiences of late that are. [00:34:10] Speaker D: Just. [00:34:10] Speaker B: Doesn't feel like the same experience as what you get with, like, Royal Caribbean on a cabana. [00:34:14] Speaker F: So. [00:34:14] Speaker D: Yeah, and I. I don't think we missed out. I think we. We didn't have any trouble finding seating. Never did we say, man, I wish we had that. You know, I think it was fine. We. We did perfect either way. [00:34:23] Speaker B: Totally. [00:34:24] Speaker D: Totally. [00:34:24] Speaker C: Now, which. Which area. Which. Which family beach area did you all set up at? Matt, I'll throw this question to you. [00:34:31] Speaker F: Um, we were so at Castaway, I forgot which we were right by. [00:34:36] Speaker C: The first tram stop or second tram stop? [00:34:39] Speaker F: It was the first one, right? I think it was the first one. [00:34:42] Speaker A: It was the second one. Is it the second one? [00:34:45] Speaker C: It all looks the same. So you're over by Pelican Plunge, then area. [00:34:50] Speaker F: That's right. Yes. [00:34:51] Speaker C: Yeah. So the first tram stop is where? To your left, of course, is the beach, but to your right is where the kids club is. Second tram stop is where, of course, everything is to your left, really, at that point, except for cookies, too. And then you've got Pelican Plunge out in the water kind of at the beginning of family beach too. But yeah, that's a great spot. We tend to. If we're not. If we don't book a cabana, then, which is when we're sailing with friends. If we can book a cabana, we'll admit we do like. We do like. We're a little bougie. We like a cabana. If we're sailing on our own, we're less likely to book a cabana. [00:35:31] Speaker B: Although we did on the last one. We did. On the last one we got. [00:35:34] Speaker C: That was a concierge sailing. We did do it. We did do it up a little bit. We did get. Have a. We did have a future cruise credit for that cruise. So we did it made it. Made everything a little bit feel a little less bougie and expensive. But anyway. Okay. So you hang out at Family Beach 2. Did you do any of the snorkeling or bicycling or any of that stuff? [00:35:56] Speaker F: Yeah, we did do some snorkeling. Right. No bicycling for us. But we did do some snorkeling and didn't do any snorkeling. She's not a snorkeler. But I did take all three of our kids, which. That was fun. [00:36:08] Speaker C: Did they do well? It's a. All the good stuff is kind of far out. Are they all decent swimmers? [00:36:13] Speaker F: They are. They are. Actually. They did really well, so I was really surprised. And we did have a blast out there, so it was fun. [00:36:20] Speaker A: Yeah, the kids played in the water a lot, like. Like the shoreline quite a bit, I think. On the first day, I took my oldest out because we usually go together out to see the icons that are sunken. But it was really cool. Like, on the second castaway, I actually took my youngest, and he had never snorkeled. Never. And it's not the shortest distance to get you out there. So I have yet to do it on my own where I'm not like pulling a kid in toe as I'm swimming, but it's a lot. And then once you're out there, there's nowhere to touch. So, you know, we've got the yellow vest inflated to make sure that he can float and take a rest and all that sort of stuff. But he did it and he was like, I want to see every single icon. And we did it. And it was. It was so much fun. Right. I just. I love that about castaway that they, you know, the. The snorkeling isn't dependent on the. The wildlife. [00:37:12] Speaker B: Right. [00:37:12] Speaker A: You can have a lot of fun whether you see them or not. [00:37:15] Speaker C: Absolutely. I. I also want to put a PSA out there. They do require you to wear those vests. Regardless of whether you bring your own snorkel equipment. You're allowed to snorkel with your own snorkel equipment, like masks, fins, whatnot. You don't have to rent them, but they do require you to put on one of these. These bright yellow vests. And those vests are inflatable so that they can operate as a flotation. You don't have to inflate them, but they want you wearing them so they can see you better when you're out there swimming. All right, what about Lookout? Matt and Anne, had you guys been to Lookout before, or was this your first experience going to Lookout? [00:37:52] Speaker E: We've been to Lookout with our last cruise, and with last cruise, Matt did parasail at Castaway, and we talked about him doing that again with one of the kids, because the kids heard about it and they're like, yeah, we want to do that. But it just ate up so much of the time the day that he did it, that we enjoyed the beach for hours before he managed to come back. So we thought we would skip it for this time. But we love Lighthouse Points. [00:38:23] Speaker F: It's my favorite. [00:38:24] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:38:24] Speaker F: Yeah. [00:38:26] Speaker A: I'll be honest. Okay, so I gotta. I gotta make this. This comparison here, right? Castaway Key. There's nothing wrong with it. It's a cheeseburger in paradise. It is a. Is a dependable, awesome, incredible day, right? Lighthouse Point is what I imagine Remy's gonna be like whenever I get to go to it of this experience. And I like to almost compare them. Like, you know, Castaway Key is kind of like Disneyland from the 50s, right? And then Lighthouse Point is Epcot in. In the height of Epcot times. And I say that in all realism because. I say that in all realism because the. If you want to go 20ft, look out, they're going to take you 150ft path throughout the. The wildlife. But it is. It is incredible there. I would say for people that are, you know, saying, oh, which one do I choose? Which one is better? You're missing the entire point, Right? You're gonna enjoy both of them, right? Go experience both of them. If you can do it on the same sailing, awesome. If you have to take two different sailings, it's worth it. Go see Lookout. You will never regret. [00:39:31] Speaker D: So gorgeous. [00:39:31] Speaker B: Yeah, I would completely agree with you in that I think comparing Lookout to Castaway is the wrong approach. Like, you have to approach these two experiences. You know, that they're. They're different and they're differentiated, and there's a reason there's two different islands. So I totally agree with you there. [00:39:48] Speaker A: I have to tell one funny story. So when we got there, we unfortunately got there a little too late. We had to sit behind the berm, which was fine. Like, we were in the water the entire time. It wasn't a big deal. But the kids got there and I hadn't sunscreened them up. And it was a full on Sunday, you know, middle of August. And I. And they had. My kids can't resist the pink sand and how, like, soft it is. So they're like playing in it and they got it all over their hands. And I'm getting ready to spray them down. I'm like, guys, go, can you go to the water, rinse off and come back, right? And so I send them there. They go, I'm looking at the clock, they're not coming back. I look at the clock, they're not coming back. Eventually we have to go and send for them. I think Jonathan, who's our responsible one in this crew, right, went and got them. They came back and I looked at my kids, I said, I told you guys, come right back. I was worried something happened to you. And my youngest looks at me, he goes, dad, how am I supposed to resist those waves? [00:40:42] Speaker C: I love that. [00:40:44] Speaker E: So that's our. Were two different experience. Castaway. The kids had a completely different playing experience than Lookout Castaway. It was rock skipping. They would stand there and in those calm waters, it was skipping rocks for hours. It was going and doing the rope climbing, which, by the way, that hurt all of their hands really badly. There was one section that was just needing a little bit of love and support there. But then at Lookout, they were jumping into the waves, crashing into the waves, building the house. It was amazing. They were looking at all the coral under their feet, checking out the fish. So two experiences that were completely different. Bowie couldn't imagine not having one of them. [00:41:33] Speaker C: Yeah, they're both awesome experiences. On that note about Pelican Plunge, they are. It is actually currently closed as we're recording, because they're undergoing renovations. So it sounds like it probably they need some. It needs some tlc. It is getting some tlc. We do not know when it's going to be reopened. Hopefully by the time this episode comes out. It has been reopened, but it is. Yeah, it's undergoing renovations as we speak. All right, well, sounds like you had three fabulous island days. How was your weather for all of those days, Amy? I'll. Yeah, so great. [00:42:09] Speaker A: Well, I'll say this the first castaway day, we were, like, surrounded by thunderstorms. It was almost like a large. I don't want to use a hurricane, because that's bad taste, but, you know, it was, like, just there. You could see them off in the distance. You could see the lightning strikes hitting. And we looked on the radar, and it was just like. It was everywhere. I was like, this day's gonna end early. We're gonna get, you know, washed out. And it never, ever materialized. Right. And so I don't know if it. If it scared some folks to get off the ship that day, knowing they had the second day to make up for it, but the crowd was lighter, and, you know, it just. It helped a lot not having the direct sun that first. First day. But that was the worst of it, right? The rest of the time was. Oh, my gosh. The Lookout day was picture perfect. And the second castaway day was just amazing. [00:42:56] Speaker E: Awesome. [00:42:56] Speaker C: I love that. [00:42:57] Speaker D: Yeah, I. I loved the itinerary. I just want to say, like. Like, I'm. I love the beach. I just want to float in the water all day. I don't, like, I feel like we're lazy in one regard or, like, boring that we don't go do the excursions, but, like, I don't need that. [00:43:09] Speaker B: You know, I just want to hang [00:43:10] Speaker D: out, and the kids are happy, but I feel like I'm saying my diamond shoes are too tight. When I. Those three island days in a row. Yeah, I would have loved to have a sea day, like, after number two. [00:43:23] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:43:23] Speaker D: We were crispy burnt, you know, by. Bye, Dan, and we were tired. You know, I was like, okay, we're getting a little worn out now, but, I mean, I would still do it again. It was perfect. I can't wait to go back. [00:43:35] Speaker C: Yeah, no, that totally makes sense. And I love the private islands. I don't think you need to book any excursions. I mean, I also love parasailing at Castaway. You know, Brian did it before Nathan and I ever did it because he was more adventurous. I was, like, terrified to do it, and then I did it, and I was like, what was I afraid of? It's so wonderful. But, like, I also don't need to do it most of the time when we go because it's just such a beautiful, you know, beach day at Castaway. And then, of course, at Lookout. [00:45:10] Speaker B: We do travel, right, the crew that [00:45:12] Speaker G: handles the planning so you can focus on relaxing. [00:45:16] Speaker C: Let's, let's jump back onto the ship. I want to start out with the Kids clubs. Teen club, Tween club, Kids club, you know, obviously Vibe, Edge and Oceaneers Club and Lab. I want to start with the older kids. So Matt and Ann, let's start with your 14 year old son. Did he go to either Vibe or Edge and if so, did he enjoy it? [00:45:44] Speaker E: If so, he had done Edge on the Dream with the girls and with his cousin and then he wanted to check it out here. But also look at that. So we did that open house night and we all went down and took a look around. He checked out Vibe and he's like. And so he went into Edge and he really enjoyed being there when everyone else was there. But he never wanted to go there just separately on his own. They said that all the counselors were really nice. It seemed like there was more technology working at Edge for this cruise than there was on the Dream at the time that we were there. It seemed like some things just weren't working or maybe just weren't being used at the time. This time there were a lot more kids there. It was a summer cruise versus the last one was more towards the fall. So I think we had more of that school age teen crowd. There were lots of games. I really like how they structured the list of events so that the kids could take a look all the way through midnight. This is what's offered. So he enjoyed playing games there with the rest of the kids. But he didn't really make any close connection, but he enjoys being with us, with his family, with Rob and Amy and with their kids. So it was just, I'm gonna go there while I have to, while my parents and the adults are having their fun time, and then I'm gonna be back with us. [00:47:20] Speaker C: That's totally fine, right? Like, it's you. Not every cruise is gonna be one where you make that lifelong connection. But, like, as long as it's, like, not. I dread going there. I always call it, like, a win. That's a win for us, I would say. How did the twins do at Edge? Did they enjoy it? [00:47:41] Speaker E: They did enjoy it. They liked being there with their additional friend and having more of that social piece there. One of them did the pirate night flash mob the last cruise and felt like that took away from that some of the extra things that we were able to do while the Edge kids were practicing. So she decided to tap on that for this one. They didn't. They made some friends and they were able to wave at them and see them at places, but I didn't really see some big crowds just hanging out that had met there. We had a WhatsApp group for the Edge Club, and some of the parents offered like, hey, let's meet up by the ice cream station here after the sail away party. And we did go, and it was nice to meet the parents with the kiddos. And they all said hello. And I think that helped as like an icebreaker activity for that first night. And they were really lovely kids. The WhatsApp groups were so supportive. And so the kids, like, they. But they really like being all together with us. And I think that's just like a special bond that they have. [00:48:52] Speaker C: Yeah, well, and that's that, you know, the benefit of going with friends who also have kids, even if they're not the same age, is if they already have a connection, it doesn't matter that they are kind of spread out in ages. They still want to hang out with one another. So, Rob and Amy, now your oldest, Lucas, he is 10, but, well, he is now almost 11. You mentioned, did you do the waiver into Edge or did he stay in Oceaneers? [00:49:20] Speaker A: So we did do the waiver, but we said at the times that your younger brother has to go to Oceaneer, you have to go with him. [00:49:29] Speaker C: Fair. [00:49:30] Speaker A: Because I'm not dealing with it. [00:49:32] Speaker C: You know, what if he's the only one on his own? Right. That. That's kind of the. That's going to be hard, especially for the youngest. Right. Like, that's kind of hard. Yeah. [00:49:41] Speaker D: Paulo and Prima Note Luke went to kids club with him. [00:49:45] Speaker A: Yes. [00:49:45] Speaker D: But then he, he's declaring to everyone, I'm an edge kid now. [00:49:48] Speaker A: Like the fact that I got him into edge, that's all he wanted to do was just be there and like be part of it. And like even, you know, the girls were like, it's not that cool. [00:50:02] Speaker C: But he thinks it's cool because he's a 10 year old boy. Their 12 year old girls is a little different. What's cool and what's not cool. [00:50:11] Speaker A: So he was just over the moon that he was able to get in there, that it was a place that he could go with his own freedom. He didn't have to be picked up by us. Right. Not that we let him do it, but he just, it was having the freedom that he just really, really liked. And now he's really excited. He was really worried that he was gonna miss Oceaneer. I think he's ready. [00:50:30] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:50:31] Speaker A: I'm more worried what we're gonna do about having to split them up. That's like, what's the problem? [00:50:35] Speaker C: Yeah, no, that makes sense. I think for us it was the same when Nathan was ready at 10. And so we were concerned because they had just sort of changed the age limit when we, when we were at that age when we, when he was 10. And so it was when they sort of ended or changed the, the upper limit to from 12 to 10 for Oceaneer and Ocean and Oceaners Club and Oceaners Lab. And we were like freaking out, like, was this going to work? But then we realized actually like, like an 11 year old has more in common with a 12 and a 13 year old than they do with a 6 year old. [00:51:10] Speaker B: Well, let's, let's be really honest here, Sam. They had a video game system in the team. [00:51:13] Speaker C: Well, yeah, club. [00:51:14] Speaker B: So like once he saw that he was, yeah, fair. [00:51:18] Speaker C: I mean, yeah, if there's video games, Nathan's there, it doesn't really matter. But for, for those listening, I always recommend like go whatever the icebreaker event is for the tween and the teen clubs. Like that's what you send your kid to, those icebreaker events. Because if they miss out on those events, I think that's where it becomes harder. Especially as like, it's that awkward age. Right. It's, it's a little bit harder to feel comfortable making those connections whereas everybody is making those connections at that icebreaker event. And so it just feels a little bit easier of a transition into those clubs. All right, well, let's switch gears and I want to talk about. I got to talk. I feel like we have to talk about food because food is such a big part of the experience on board any Disney cruise. You've got amazing rotational dining. Of course you all have eaten at the same themed restaurants essentially on board the dream for, for you guys, Matt and Ann and for Rob and Amy, you guys have been on this ship before. But how, how did dining go? I, you all are, I, I mean, I assume you're all at one table, is nine of you. That's, it's not a small table, but it's not the biggest table that they deal with. How did food and ordering and all of that go? I'm going to start with Ann because with Celiax, you're the one who's got to order ahead. [00:52:36] Speaker E: That I do, I do. I did for the islands. They did an amazing job taking the order the night before like they did the last cruise. And there were a couple of things that the last cruise I will say they were able to modify a little bit better than they were this time. And we found out, Apollo, that apparently we were on the dream at a time that they were experimenting with some new options for the gluten free menus and they figured out what they want to do like a slow rollout with. So it just hadn't hit the fantasy yet. I was a little disappointed because some of those things have become like my things I was looking forward to. But you know, next. Gross. So I did enjoy ordering some of the barbecue things and the fries and the things that I think that the fries were not an option for the non gluten free regular cookies menu, was it? Or the Lookout. So we really like that. I like being able to. [00:53:43] Speaker C: There is no, there are no french fries for regular guests at Cookies or Cookies too. At Castaway, at Lookout, there are french fries for everyone. There are french fries over by Serenity Bay and those cabanas by Serenity Bay. This is the Mickey and Minnie Cove cabanas. But that's the only French fries on the island. Yeah. [00:53:59] Speaker B: See the cabana. The cabana would have gotta get. [00:54:01] Speaker C: I mean if you want french fries. Want to solve your french fry problem, you got to get a cabana. Only. Only a Mickey and Minnie cabana for. [00:54:07] Speaker B: Only for only like $1,000 you2 can experience French fries. [00:54:12] Speaker A: French fries, [00:54:15] Speaker C: Thousand dollar Diamond shoes French fries. Yeah. And how did, how did the food go in the dining room overall? Like I, I, I understand it wasn't quite as good as as it had been on the Dream and your previous cruise. But was it. Did it work out in terms of being given more than one option, for example? Because I know that can be with. For anyone with food allergies, that can be an issue. [00:54:40] Speaker E: It most definitely is. It's the most accommodating food experience that I have outside of home and cooking for myself. Which being the only person in the household that needs seed like that. It doesn't have to frequently where I'm pulling out all the stuff just to have one meal like that. I was able to choose from a handful of things. I love the scallops. I love the breakfast options. I spoke to my the server the first night and I said, look, I'm not like a big cart person for like the waffles and the pancakes, so find me something with protein that would go with my coffee for breakfast. He was able to put something together. And when I say I had to bow giant two plates of bacon loaded. We had to share with everyone because it was just so much. The donuts, actually the gluten free donuts. I have to find out where they got them from because they were amazing and they did not have those on the drain. I'm still looking for those. They were. If they had been frozen. You couldn't tell. Yeah. [00:55:48] Speaker B: Wow. I want to ask on the food question because you've mentioned it and actually a show I was editing today that's now out. You know, the guest was on the fantasy and they were doing test menus. It sounds like similar to what you experienced. We have not seen or experienced these test menus ourselves. Like what. What were the dishes that you tried? They were like, this is just not good. Like I kind of want the warning list out there for people if there was stuff that was on those menus or like I would skip that. [00:56:17] Speaker E: I think they were testing only gluten free items. [00:56:20] Speaker C: Only gluten free items. [00:56:22] Speaker E: What they could try to mix. Yes. [00:56:24] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:56:24] Speaker F: Okay. [00:56:25] Speaker A: We did have the new updated menu, but I don't think that's what you're talking about. I don't think they were doing okay. [00:56:30] Speaker B: I misunderstood. I thought you guys had had some of these test menus that have been circulating. [00:56:33] Speaker A: No, no, no. [00:56:34] Speaker F: Okay. [00:56:35] Speaker A: They're testing out how to make things gluten free that without just being straight up protein and vegetables. [00:56:42] Speaker F: Right. [00:56:42] Speaker C: Without just serving you a steak and some vegetables. Yeah. [00:56:47] Speaker D: And wasn't something Apollo. There was a pasta you could have on the dream, but you couldn't have [00:56:50] Speaker E: the lasagna and lasagna that still appears in my dream at the Apollo. On the dream, however, here they said it's coming. I need to know a date. So I do not, you know, schedule anything prematurely here. But it was amazing. I feel like there was also like a tiramisu or some other dessert that was. I'm a cake person. I love all those things because I can't, I can't find that here. Short of like the three options that Woodman test. That's about it. [00:57:23] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:57:23] Speaker E: But they did their best. The server on a dream, my sister in law, I, she also had a celiac. That server would bring us like five different desserts to try from. He would gather things up from all the different dining rooms and bring them together and say, here you go. We couldn't ask for anything more. He's on the dusty now. Our server here did a great job of recommending main dishes and I love the everything that he recommended. Not as many things could be modified. That's okay. The sea scallops were very good. The beet salad, never thought I would like it that much. [00:58:02] Speaker C: I love that. I love that. Listen, they can't do everything and we get that because it's just, they have a, you know, limited kitchen space and time. But it is pretty amazing what they do do. And it is a testament to Disney for, I mean, like you said, it's better than any restaurant you could go to in Chicago. So unless you went to a restaurant that is specifically catering to gluten free diets. So that's pretty amazing. What was a service like overall? I'll throw this to Matt. Like, did you feel like you had a good level of service and did you feel the food quality overall in main dining and in cabanas was good? [00:58:42] Speaker F: Our servers at, at main dining were amazing. They were just fantastic. I mean, even to the level of making sure that the kids had their drinks, you know, as they liked them ready ahead, ready ahead of time and prepped because the kids wanted like this like almost kind of like a Shirley Temple, but you know, a kitty cocktail or something like that. And the assistant server was, she was amazing. She had everything prepped, ready to go. Yeah. And they were fancy, but it was amazing. They really did accommodate us really well. I mean we had a party of five on our side, a party of four with Rob and Amy and their kids. So to accommodate for nine people right away, it's a challenge. I'm pretty sure it's a challenge. I know they do it every day, but still it's a challenge. I Know I couldn't do it. So I think they did fantastic, and I hope I get them again. Yeah, they're really good. [00:59:39] Speaker A: And we've cruised enough that there's times where it's not. Not the same level. This was probably top one or two servers that we've had across our. Our nine sailings. They were. They were actually. [00:59:51] Speaker D: Yeah, they were on it. Like, a lot of times we've been one of the last people to leave late dining and not. We're not dawdling to order. It's just been that way. But this time I feel like. I mean, we were. They were moving. It was. It was awesome. They were just so, so friendly, too. So we meshed really well with them. [01:00:05] Speaker A: That's really awesome. I always know I have a great server on either a dream or classic ship when I tell them I go into Royal Court Lumiere, you know, tritons. And I say, I adore the souffle. I would like it every single night that you can bring it to me. It doesn't have to be every night, but every night that you can please bring it to me. And I will wait for it. I don't care. But it's amazing. So can you do that? And the ones that are great are like, sure, no problem. Why are you even asking? Like, that's not a big request. [01:00:36] Speaker B: So the ones that aren't great, send the area manager over to give you a talking. [01:00:39] Speaker C: Tell you we can't make it happen. [01:00:41] Speaker A: We know how far our galleys are for one another. [01:00:43] Speaker C: Yeah. [01:00:44] Speaker E: Yes. I feel like they had their feelers on. [01:00:47] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:00:47] Speaker E: Like they were both just on top of the kids. [01:00:50] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:00:51] Speaker E: And each of the kids has a completely different taste. My oldest, he loves the Disney cruises because he wants to have a steak every single night. Maybe two. Maybe a steak in the lamb. Whatever it is, the pork shoulder, he'll take it off. And they were there. They were ready to make the space. Hey, would you like another one? Would you like more of this? So they knew what he wanted, and they were ready to cater to that. And then they were ready to like all of the rest of the kids. Each one was looking for a different thing. You know, one wanted just Mac and cheese every single night. The other one, we know what that's like. This way. And you make them happy. And they did. I mean, we could sit back for the most part and just enjoy. [01:01:33] Speaker C: I love that. Now I gotta ask about entertainment and activities, and we can't cover it all. So I'd love to know. Just like A couple of highlights. Maybe a highlight from each of you. What was your favorite either entertainment or activity that you got to do on board the fantasy. I'm gonna start with Amy. Cause I see her nodding, so I feel like she already knows in her head what her favorite was. [01:01:58] Speaker D: The kids did karaoke on the last night. Charlotte and Luke. Correct? Am I remembering that? Yeah. So they sang. [01:02:05] Speaker A: Was it A Whole New World? A Whole New World Together they reversed the parts. [01:02:11] Speaker C: Oh, my God. [01:02:12] Speaker A: Scarlett did Aladdin and Luke did. Because Charlotte was concerned she couldn't hit the high notes. And Luke is like, [01:02:23] Speaker C: that's amazing. [01:02:24] Speaker D: That was like at 11:45 on the last night. Because we always laugh that, you know, family karaoke is wise. Is it so late? But you know, we're still there. It's fine. But it was just, it was so fun to watch them. And I know they were both nervous. Luke has done karaoke several times. I don't know about Charlotte, but they, they got up there, they did awesome. And it was just, it was so fun to watch. I was really proud of them. So that was cool. [01:02:45] Speaker B: I have to applaud you for like last night. Like just suck the marrow out of the cruise on that last night, you know, like, just do it. Like, that's great. [01:02:53] Speaker D: We're here. Let's stay awake. Who needs sleep is still open. [01:02:56] Speaker B: Like, it's why I like to get packed earlier in the day. So you can just, you can be out hanging out, enjoying ship espresso martini. [01:03:03] Speaker C: Exactly. It's fine. Well, I'll just drink coffee in the morning, coffee at night, coffee in the morning, doesn't matter. All right, I'm going to jump over to Ann and what was one of your favorite either entertainment or activities on board that you guys got to do? [01:03:18] Speaker E: We went to see or Landon and we saw Beauty and the Beast on a Dream, which was. I couldn't imagine anything comparing to that because it truly felt like I was at Broadway. But the genie and Eliade just stole the entire show. And I want to follow him on Instagram and see where else he goes and go anywhere he does because he just made the show where the 14 year old boy was just eating the whole thing up. The younger kids were attached, the performers, the actors were coming out from the side door in the back. And we happened to be sitting in the second half of the theater. So they were coming right out in front of us. And they even interacted, they waved, they made faces, expressions. So it made me very much appreciate Disney for being able to take something that is Aladdin. And maybe it wasn't my favorite live action movie, but then take that Broadway experience and really make us feel it. [01:04:26] Speaker C: Wow, I love that. Yeah, I think Disney, I mean, Disney Entertainment is the best and of course Beauty and the Beast is the best. But Aladdin is a phenomenal production. I mean, all of the productions on Disney Cruise Line are really top notch and they all can stand up to Broadway productions with some exception as to some cheesy storylines. But that doesn't mean that the performers. I'm talking about a couple of the shows, shows that are variety type shows where the storyline is cheesy, but the songs, the dance, the singing, all of that top notch Broadway. Broadway quality. All right, Matt, what was your favorite activity or entertainment moment on board? [01:05:10] Speaker F: I have to say it was the Aladdin show. Yeah, it really was. It really was. It was. It was really fun. That was a great show. But also the activity that the kids did did was another one that was kind of like a little right to the feels a little bit because watching my daughter out there singing is just. It's one of those things just steals a dad's heart, you know. So, you know, it's. It was, it was really fun. [01:05:33] Speaker C: You know, you're wrapped around the. You have two girls, you're wrapped around both. [01:05:37] Speaker A: I do think. [01:05:38] Speaker C: Yeah, I do. [01:05:39] Speaker F: Yeah, I do. So. But the Aladdin show is amazing. I mean, the, the genie really did steal the show on that one. It was great. That was a really good show. [01:05:47] Speaker E: I think that they actually adjust that script for the times because it felt like it was very up with some modern slang terms that I hear more around our kids than I would ever think would show up on a stage. [01:06:02] Speaker C: Oh, yeah, they. Absolutely. They both adapt it with like slang language, but they also adapt it once in a while with a sort of a timely entertainment joke. They might like joke about a new Spider man movie or something like that. They'll throw some. They'll sort of change it up to keep it fresh. Not every joke gets changed, but just here and there. [01:06:22] Speaker B: I think that genie has a lot of flexibility within limits. And like I. The genie makes or breaks the show, [01:06:28] Speaker A: like just hands talking about AI. I know success dated, but he threw one of those in there. I mean, he did all the. He did all the things like he knew the audience. He just hit them all. I'm going to connect with all of you. So he did a fantastic job. And you know, he did a fantastic job because our oldest one will not see the same show twice. He was very Upset, we took him back into la. He's like, why are we here? I'm like, because everyone's here. We're gonna have an experience together. And he walked out of there going, that was amazing. [01:06:54] Speaker C: Yeah, because it is different every time. I mean, I'm not. Other shows, not so much. Other shows are more similar, but because of the freedom that they give in terms of the sort of, like, ad libbing with the genie, Aladdin does change. Probably more so than the other shows. All right, Rob, what was your favorite activity that you guys all did on the. [01:07:17] Speaker A: It is so hard to bubble it down to one thing. [01:07:19] Speaker C: I know. [01:07:20] Speaker A: I will. I will focus in on one little moment that I swear. We didn't start this because of the commercial. [01:07:27] Speaker D: Yeah. [01:07:27] Speaker A: Ever since we've been. [01:07:29] Speaker C: I know, it's commercial. [01:07:31] Speaker A: We've been doing nighttime walks, like, mostly. Used to be me. It. Like on the first ones, it was me, I went and filled all the water. And so then I would fill the waters right? In the little thermal, you know, mugs, and I'd bring them back, and I'd catch a little bit of funnel vision, right? And then. And then it expanded into, oh, look, pizza's still open. I'm gonna go grab a slice of pizza while I watch this show. And, like, it used to be, like, my little routine. And then when we got to, like, the third or fourth cruise, I used to take the kids on the last night, and don't get me in trouble. Come at me, guys. But I used to take the kids through the adult areas, like on the Dream at the front of the ship, to show them where, like, Satellite Falls was. And they were like, oh, gosh, we're not supposed to be here. It's all secret. And so. But on this one, specifically because of the commercial, my kids started saying to me, dad, let's go do a midnight walk. Let's go fill the waters. And so that was really fun that they started doing it along with me. It also gave Amy, like, a good little moment of peace while I took them out and we would go look at the different parts of the ship. We would go fill up the waters. I would ask them if they want food, if we got there before ice cream. But that little walk at night, there's nothing like that. Right? You can't. [01:08:39] Speaker D: It. [01:08:39] Speaker A: It's very hard to find that in the parks. [01:08:41] Speaker F: Right. [01:08:42] Speaker A: You might get it at the resorts every once in a while. But just being out of the ship, middle of the ocean, seeing the moonlight, right. Feeling the wind, being there with your kid that's, that's, that's a cool thing. And I will keep doing that until I can't stay awake anymore. [01:08:56] Speaker C: I love that. I think that's awesome. I never can stay up for those nightly walks that I'm like, in bed, I'm in my pajamas. I, I can't. But I, I keep think saying I'm gonna stay up because I love the idea actually through the atrium and you know, by myself when it's like completely empty. But. All right, well, before we get to the kids, I want to ask, is there anything we've missed in terms of anything unusual either good, bad, weird that we just haven't talked about? As I mentioned, you know, in our pre show discussion, we can't cover everything that you possibly did on this five night sailing on the Disney fantasy. But we want, you know, we endeavor to give, you know, tips out to the community and to of course, capture those really either wonderful or less than wonderful moments. So I'm curious if we have we missed anything from any of you. [01:09:53] Speaker A: I would say, like, if I was going to add anything else, is that just for folks that are looking at the duo double dip itinerary, especially when it's five nights, might be better when it's seven. That is a very, I would say not. Not ship focus itinerary. We never had a chance to play midship detective. We barely got to, you know, Pepe's door to talk about him and to, you know, find out the numbers we'd call for the joke of the day. Right there just. There wasn't a lot of that time for like ship exploring. Right. Which is fine. It just, you go into it eyes wide open of like, this itinerary is good. It's kind of like those middle three days in Alaska where it's like port, port, port, Right. Get off the ship early, come back the ship late. It's kind of like that. Unless if you're one of the castaway lookout people, that's like, I can be fine with like two hours and then I can go and eat and come back. I don't know those people. I wish I could try to be those people, but that's not me. We are, we are getting, like Brian said, we are getting the marrow out of the bone of we will. We were waiting for that. I think Was it second castaway? We were 445 skinned. [01:11:00] Speaker D: There were people behind us. Yeah, we weren't the last, but we were. We closed down the islands all three days. I mean, we were like the last [01:11:07] Speaker B: people leaving My favorite. My favorite memory is still of our first cruise. Our friend got us an adult cabana on Serenity Bay. Just happened to be available, and they had to like, come find us in the cabana and be like, you guys need to leave, like now. Like, we have a golf cart that's going to take you all the way [01:11:24] Speaker D: back to the ship. [01:11:26] Speaker B: So we're probably the reason why they started implementing the. You need to be out an hour early. [01:11:30] Speaker C: An hour before the cabana's closed. Yeah, true. All right, guys, well, why don't we wrangle up some kids? [01:11:39] Speaker B: All right, Sam, I think we have reached that point in the show where I need to hand you off with a group of kiddos here. Avengers have assembled to hopefully apply no judgments, but to get their favorites. So the round we know is Rapid Fire, the gentle edition. [01:11:56] Speaker C: Yes, Rapid fire, the gentle edition. Okay, welcome, kids. We have 14 year old Jonathan. We have have 12 year old Caroline and Charlotte. We have 10 year old Lucas, and we have 7 year old Benny. All right, welcome to rapid Fire, you all. Okay, so I'm going to ask you first your favorite Disney character. We're going to go oldest to youngest for character, and then I'll. We'll kind of flip it around a little bit. So, Jonathan, we'll start with you. Who is your favorite Disney character? [01:12:27] Speaker F: Lightning McQueen. [01:12:29] Speaker C: Lightning McQueen. Awesome. Okay. All right. Is this Caroline or Charlotte next to you? [01:12:35] Speaker F: Charlotte. [01:12:35] Speaker C: Charlotte, tell us, who is your favorite Disney character? [01:12:40] Speaker E: Sophia the first. [01:12:41] Speaker C: Oh, I love Sophia the first. All right, Caroline, who is your favorite Disney character? [01:12:48] Speaker G: Chip. [01:12:49] Speaker C: Chip. I love Chip too. He's so cute. Yeah. If you've ever seen the chip on Broadway, it's always actually played by a real kid. And that's like my favorite part of seeing a live performance of Beauty and the Beast. [01:13:03] Speaker A: Just one quick correction because Caroline would not let that say. And she meant Chip of Chip and Dale. [01:13:08] Speaker C: Whoa. Chip of Chip and Dale. Oh, I. [01:13:10] Speaker A: The chip box. Not that the other chip's bad. [01:13:13] Speaker C: Not the other Chip. [01:13:13] Speaker A: Make sure her voice is heard. [01:13:15] Speaker C: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. There's unfortunately more than one chip. [01:13:19] Speaker B: Sorry, I was just gonna say I didn't understand why you went to the obscure chip as opposed to everyone's favorite chip. [01:13:25] Speaker A: We know where Sam's mind is now because know beauty the be stop show. It's Chip is the. Is the chip. [01:13:31] Speaker C: Well, it's. [01:13:31] Speaker D: It's. [01:13:32] Speaker C: It's funny because I do love Chip and Dale, but I. I just had my mind on Beauty and the Beast. That's exactly Right, Rob? I always had it my mind on Beauty and the Beast. And oftentimes you hear people who refer to Chip and Dale as, like. As one. If they say their favorite, they'll say Chip and Dale. Right. They won't just say Chip or just Dale. So that. That's where I got a little confused, but thank you for that correction. All right, Lucas, who is your favorite Disney character? Well, he's kind of a. Well, he's a Marvel character, but Spider Man. That's awesome. Yeah. And when I say Disney, you can pick from any of the Disney universes, which includes Marvel. Also includes Star wars universe as well. All right, Benny, last but not least, Pluto. I love Pluto, too. And actually my son Nathan loves Pluto. All right, I would love to know your favorite Disney movie. So we're going to start this time with Benny. Benny, what's your favorite Disney movie? [01:14:33] Speaker A: He's. He wants to pick not a movie, but I think they've done some TV movies with this franchise. [01:14:38] Speaker C: All right, that works. [01:14:38] Speaker A: Go ahead and say that. Which one? Okay, so I have to say it. It's Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and any of those types. He actually. I'm going to just vote for him. He used to love the. The Mick Daisy and Tale of Two Witches. That's what it was called. He used to be a. [01:14:57] Speaker C: No, he did. He did. [01:14:58] Speaker E: He did. [01:15:00] Speaker C: I mean, I love it, too. So. [01:15:03] Speaker D: Okay. [01:15:03] Speaker C: All right, well, Lucas, what's your favorite Disney movie? [01:15:06] Speaker E: Spiderman. [01:15:07] Speaker C: Brand new day. Oh, nice. I haven't seen it yet. I have to confess, by the way, [01:15:12] Speaker A: it's a little late to spread this news, but just in future, you know, they're gonna make more Spider man movies. Those are actually Sony movies, so they don't have those on the ship when they first come out. So. But just for other folks to know. [01:15:23] Speaker C: Yeah, they eventually will make their way onto the ships into Disney, but they don't come on like those premieres at sea or even early release. They won't be on when they're still in the movie theaters. All right, Caroline, I'm gonna have to have you speak up, only because the way we've got your speakers going and lean towards your sister, but tell us, what is your favorite Disney movie? [01:15:48] Speaker E: Captain America. [01:15:49] Speaker C: Captain America. The Best Avenger. The First Avenger. I love it. Okay, Charlotte, your favorite Disney movie. [01:15:59] Speaker E: The OG Beauty and the Beast. [01:16:01] Speaker C: Yes, absolutely. Jonathan, your favorite Disney movie. [01:16:07] Speaker F: It's between Captain America and Iron Man. [01:16:12] Speaker C: I mean, both fantastic options. I love you guys. Have great taste in movies. [01:16:16] Speaker E: I changed my mind. [01:16:18] Speaker C: Mind you change your Mind. What do you change? [01:16:20] Speaker E: Guardians of the Galaxy. [01:16:21] Speaker B: Oh, good one. [01:16:22] Speaker C: That has the best music. All right, we're gonna jump over to Disney Cruise Line. I want to know your favorite activity, favorite thing to do on the Disney cruise ship. Not on the private islands, but on the ship. It could be, like, in the theater. It could be trivia. It could be eating, whatever. We're gonna start. We're gonna start in the middle, so we're gonna start with Caroline. [01:16:51] Speaker E: Trivia. [01:16:52] Speaker C: Trivia. I love it. Do you have a particular favorite category of trivia? [01:16:57] Speaker E: Well, like the one with Mickey Mouse. [01:17:01] Speaker C: Mickey Mouse. [01:17:02] Speaker E: Mouseketeer Madness. Mouseketeer Madness. [01:17:05] Speaker C: Mouseketeer Madness. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. The family game show. I love that one. Awesome. All right, Charlotte, what about you? [01:17:11] Speaker E: It was either being at the restaurant, like, for dinner or karaoke. [01:17:20] Speaker C: Yes. Awesome. We did hear that you sang a duet. I love it. All right, Lucas, I'm jumping over to you. What's your favorite thing to do on a Disney cruise? Eat at the cantina, Especially Donald's Cantina. Yeah, we like Mexican food on board. Well, both of them are good. Yeah, McDonald's is better. Oh, okay, Good to know. Yeah, Ramones is on the Dream and the Fantasy. Now Donald's being on the Wish. All the Wish class ships. All right, Benny, what's your favorite thing to do on a Disney? Eating ice cream. Eating ice cream. That's the. What's the. What's the right flavor, though? [01:18:00] Speaker E: Banana and McKinnon. [01:18:01] Speaker B: Ah, banana. [01:18:03] Speaker C: Banana. That is the right answer. [01:18:05] Speaker B: Hang out with us anytime after that one. [01:18:07] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah. Banana ice cream for everyone. Jonathan, what's your favorite thing to do on a Disney cruise? [01:18:14] Speaker F: I like sea days where I get to explore the ship and see other people's door decorating and stuff like that. [01:18:25] Speaker C: Yeah, I love that. Exploring the ship and looking at door decorations on a sea day. That's fantastic. All right, you guys, I want to ask my final question. Well, I kind of want to know which stuffies you all brought on your cruise with you, but I see we got a turtle up there. We've got. Is that a. What did I. Is that a kakamoa? [01:18:48] Speaker E: Monkey. [01:18:49] Speaker C: Oh, it's a monkey. Okay, a kakamora. I was thinking like the, you know, the little coconut guys from Moana. [01:18:55] Speaker D: Yeah. [01:18:55] Speaker C: So I was thinking kakamora. I want to know what your favorite ship is in of the ones that you've sailed, what your favorite ship is. So, Jonathan, let's start with you. [01:19:08] Speaker F: Fantasy. [01:19:09] Speaker C: The fantasy. Why do you like the fantasy better than the dream? [01:19:13] Speaker F: Probably because I just, I think it's because I got to explore more and like understand more. But if I got to see the same amount of the Dream, I think I would like them like equal, equally. [01:19:31] Speaker C: Yeah, that makes sense. Your second cruise, you have more time to kind of just explore the ship because you kind of know what you're doing. You know, the lay of the land. It makes it a little easier. All right, Charlotte, what's your favorite ship? [01:19:45] Speaker E: Well, there's a pro for each. Like for the Dream, it had like better stores. But the Fantasy, because I like the Muppets, its door and calling Pepe each day. [01:19:59] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, I will tell you, Pepe is on both of the ships. You actually have Pepe's door. Yeah, he's only on the Dream and the Fantasy, but that. Because a Muppets game in the Midship Detective agency is on both of those ships. But you got to find him. And it's, it's one of those things where that's something you might overlook on your first cruise. So that makes sense. Yeah. All right, Caroline, what is your favorite ship? [01:20:23] Speaker E: The Fantasy. [01:20:25] Speaker C: The Fantasy. How come? [01:20:27] Speaker E: Because I had a better time on that ship. [01:20:29] Speaker C: You had a better time. All right, well, that's simple. I mean, it's just sometimes the cruise is, is about the cruise and not necessarily about some difference on the ship. All right, we're going to go over to Benny and Lucas. Lucas, we're going to start with you. What is your favorite Disney ship? You have a few more to choose from from the Treasure. Yeah, it's a great ship. It's a, it's a Parks fans ship. All right, Benny, what about you? Your favorite ship, Wonder, because it goes to Alaska and I was born in the winter. [01:21:03] Speaker E: Winter babies too. [01:21:04] Speaker C: Can't go wrong with the Wonder in Alaska. I, I don't know what to say except you win, Benny. I mean you've, you've just won all of Rapid Fire because you answered Wonder in Alaska. No. Thank you all for playing. You guys have been so wonderful. I'm gonna, we're gonna end the show here. We're just gonna say thank you to Ann and Matt and Rob and Amy. For all of you for coming on the show. You'll have to come back. We'd love to have you. And with that we'll just say thanks so much.
