Show Notes

Miranda admits she used to be “kind of snobby” about cruising. A few years and three Disney Cruise Line ships later, the New Yorker is back from a seven-night Western Caribbean sailing on the Disney Treasure with her family, and she has thoughts on everything from the Grand Hall to the security line that confiscated her homemade fish extender treats.

In this episode:

  • Why a true seven-night sailing feels different from a back-to-back that adds up to seven nights
  • Splitting a family across staterooms to save money, and the photo package wrinkle that comes with it
  • The prepackaged-food rule every fish extender participant should know before boarding
  • Lunch at Enchanté with the wine pairing, and whether the splurge was worth it
  • A 105-foot submarine dive in Cozumel and a Castaway Cay versus Lookout Cay hot take
  • Coco, Worlds of Marvel, the Haunted Mansion Parlor, Moana and Beauty and the Beast

“The YouTube videos do not do the Treasure justice. Everyone said it’s so beautiful, and I was like, I don’t know. I don’t like that chandelier. But in person, it is astonishing.” — Miranda

[00:00:00] Speaker A: I thought I was prepared, and I couldn't believe it. The. The YouTube videos do not do the treasure justice. Everyone said it's so beautiful. I was like, I don't know. I don't like that chandelier. But in person, it is astonishing. Those deep jewel tones and the velvet and the beautiful mosaic tile work, it is stunning. I didn't know what to do with myself. [00:02:50] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm excited. We have a listener joining us all the way from New York City, my favorite city in the entire world, even though I don't live, of course, in New York anymore. [00:03:01] Speaker B: And Disney's newest returning home port. So there you go. [00:03:04] Speaker C: That's right. Disney's newest returning home port and of course location of an amazing Disney store if you are near Times Square. But super excited to welcome for the first time to the show Miranda. Welcome to the show, Miranda. [00:03:17] Speaker A: Thanks everyone. What a delight to be here straight from the city. So nice they named it twice. [00:03:23] Speaker C: They did. I love that. New York, New York, what a wonderful town. [00:03:27] Speaker A: All right, well, so much buzz about the new port and all those sailings sold out. I'm. We're silver. We didn't get to. Yeah. Wild. [00:03:36] Speaker C: Well, I will say keep an eye out because you know, a lot of people put holds down on those sailings but those are good for like three days. And so if they don't pay their deposit or they can even cancel even after they pay their deposit. So I would not be surprised. [00:03:52] Speaker A: That's the conjecture in the Facebook groups. [00:03:54] Speaker C: Yeah, like there will be. Will they, will, will everybody cancel? Absolutely not. But like if you are somebody who sort of really wants to get on one of those New York City sailings, like if you just kind of keep an eye on it every once in a while over the, over the coming months. I, I think a lot of people who are, who want to get on one of those sailings will be able to because of cancellations. [00:04:15] Speaker A: Definitely. [00:04:16] Speaker C: Yeah. It's just a lot of movement. I mean we, we ourselves did not book any of those because of course we have a middle schooler and we live on the west coast and it's just not a time of year, October that we have. There's, you know, no school breaks. We have like one three day weekend I think in October. But other, other than that, it's just too much pulling a middle schooler out of school. But you have young kids. So you, you know, you, you take that vacation in October. [00:04:42] Speaker A: Yeah, a kindergartner and a third grader at that point. And. But we start school so late here. My kids still aren't back. They go back Thursday. So some of those sailings are only a few weeks after they started school. So. Yeah, but hopefully that'll be, that would be amazing. [00:04:56] Speaker C: Yeah. Well, and that's. Wow, you guys start late. So we're recording this on September 5th. So you start like the Thursday after Labor Day this year. Yeah, that's a, that's a. [00:05:05] Speaker A: Always. Yeah, always a tradition in New York City. Thursday after Labor Day. [00:05:08] Speaker C: That's crazy. Well, Miranda, we, we are here to talk about your amazing seven night cruise on the Disney Treasure. You went on a Western Caribbean itinerary, which is great to talk about because we have very little experience in the Western Caribbean because our spring break for some reason always works out over the Eastern Caribbean itineraries. But before we dive into talking about your sailing, we gotta, we gotta hear your dis. Background, your Disney cruising background. Where does the love of Disney come from and how did you get into cruising? [00:05:39] Speaker A: JEFFREY R. Great question. Well, I grew up loving Disney. I grew up in the 90s, so a child of the Renaissance films and had several family trips to Disney World and one music department trip in high school. I got to perform in a few locations. Fantasy World was one of them. Then as an adult I kind of abandoned it and got kind of too cool for Disney for many a long time. I went on a trip, extended family trip in 2013, but was in my thrill seeking days so preferred the universal part of that trip. Then I had small kids also. Through this time I had pretty much no interest in cruising. Was kind of snobby about it, said I would take it in Alaska cruise, but otherwise I don't want to do that. So I had kids. I'm an older mom, so I was in my early 40s with two small kids and exhausted and didn't know how to travel with them. And it was post Covid and it was suggested to me that cruises are great options for small kids. So our first cruise was when the eldest was three and the little one was just over a year and it was on Oasis of the Seas with Royal leaving from New York, well, leaving from New Jersey Bayone and it went down to the Bahamas and back and it was such a, an incredible experience. We absolutely loved it. I had chosen, everyone said Royal and Disney are the ones to go with little kids, but Disney's more expensive. Meanwhile, I started becoming much more into Disney. My true Disney adult was set free. [00:07:10] Speaker C: You can see she was rolling inside of you. [00:07:13] Speaker A: Yes, she was waiting to escape. My husband teases me like when did you get so obsessed with Disney? I think it was always there, just, you know, not, not free. So it's a prestar. So a year later, this was our spring break. Fairly close to the sailing we booked the Magic 7 Night Southern Caribbean leaving from San Juan and we chose that entire well dates of course. But also I really wanted to do another seven day. We had loved that and I was excited about the ports and at this point my kids were 4 and 2 and we got off the ship twice. We didn't plan any excursions because there was nothing for 3 year olds or 2 year olds through Disney. We did the two walkable ports but we just, you know, I first got on the ship and was like this is tiny compared to royal. This is so weird. And by the end I was in love. It's. The magic is just beautiful. It's intimate. We had an amazing experience up on the pool deck one day. It was a port day so it was quiet up there. All of a sudden my 2 year old takes off running. I go after him and he's interacting with Mickey Mouse and had this really long, lovely interaction with Mickey Mouse and I was hooked. So since then we've had our first family Walt Disney World trip which was exactly a year ago in August. So kids were what five and three then. And I learned that my family can't handle the Orlando heat in August. It was, it was a. I did a ton of research learning about Disney World traveling but the trip did not match my expectations because it just is so hard. So I got, I was so excited booked this trip on the Treasure for this recent trip. And then in my excitement and my addiction to listen, listening to you guys I realized well, I can't go from the magic class straight to the wish class. So we booked another spring break trip a few months ago in April on the Dream. And then I made it a back to back because I needed a seven day trip. So here we are almost gold in just a few years. [00:09:21] Speaker C: And I love you did magic, then dream and then Treasure. I love that you went, you went at least the classes in order. [00:09:30] Speaker A: Obviously it should have been magic, dream, wish obviously. But I've not, I don't like the short sailings. Just like. [00:09:37] Speaker C: No, you, you made the right decision. Once you know that your family can do a seven night sail, I say stick to as close you to as you can get to a seven night sailing. Sometimes that might mean a five night or a six night but you know [00:09:51] Speaker A: they're seven night back to back was truly exhausting. I think it's cause the pace on the shorter cruisings are, is more frantic, frenetic. And then this seven night was also exhaust I guess cause my kids are older and running around. So I think I'm seeing the appeal of the four or five night. [00:10:07] Speaker C: There's also a lot to do on the Treasure. I think so. [00:10:11] Speaker A: So much endless. [00:10:12] Speaker C: Yeah. It's even like I love the classic ships. I feel like they're a little bit more relaxing, a little bit slower pace even with the same number of nights. There's just, they've added so many more spaces and activities and sort of things to see on those bigger ships on the, on the newer ships and yeah. So it just makes for yeah. A more frenetic feeling for those cruises. I don't think I will agree with you. I think that the a back to back that gets you to seven nights is not equal to a seven nights. Right. Like I know people do that because there's a particular ship they want to go on or whatever fits in their schedule. And so doing like a wish, let's say a three night and then a four night and then comparing it to a seven night on the Treasure. [00:10:58] Speaker A: Different. [00:10:58] Speaker C: Completely different experience because it's not, you don't really get the full seven nights on a back to back because of that interruption of that disembarkation and embarkation day. You really miss out a lot of because of that one day in between. And frankly you're paying for that day twice. People don't realize you're actually paying for it on the first cruise and the second. Yeah. [00:11:18] Speaker A: Oh, you pay for disembarkation day. [00:11:19] Speaker C: Well, I mean it's your, if you think about it like it's included. I mean it doesn't count as a night but it count, it's part, it's part of your, you know, your the night before counts as the night. So I, I, you're, I think you're paying for it twice. [00:11:33] Speaker A: I expected we were going to watch the stage shows twice and it would be so fun. And we ended up skipping several main dining meals. Didn't see any of the shows. On the second sailing we did get to be interviewed for Ryan's favorite, the Golden Mickeys. That was fun. [00:11:50] Speaker C: Oh, that's so fun. I love that. Well, let's, let's talk about the Treasure now did you just pick it because you wanted a seven night sailing and this is what sort of fit in your schedule or was it that you really wanted to get on the Treasure? Like what was the kind of. [00:12:06] Speaker A: Exactly. We picked it as the seven night. I wanted to do the eastern sailing, but the western is what made sense for our travel group. But then as I did my research and learned, I was delighted to find I was going on the Treasure. [00:12:19] Speaker C: Yeah, Fantastic. Yeah. Now tell us like who, who all went with you is Your family of four? [00:12:25] Speaker A: A family of four. My husband, my two kids who are now 6 and 4. My mom, who lives near you, she lives in Portland, Oregon. And so we see much of us seeing her as traveling together. She has a lot of cruising experience now since, since being in a. Since her kids being an empty nester. And then my daughter's best friend who lives very close to us and her mom came with us as well. And this was their first cruise ever. [00:12:53] Speaker C: Oh, awesome. So three different staterooms for the group. Now did you put one of your kids in your mom's room to save money? Yeah. So folks who are, if you're listening, you don't know what I'm talking about. Every room on Disney Cruise Line is priced based on double occupancy minimum. So two people. So if you're a single solo cruiser in a room by yourself, like booked in a room by yourself, you are paying for two people. So Miranda's family of four, they could book one room and then her mom could book a separate room, but then you're actually paying for six people. So the smarter thing to do is to Miranda will book three. Her three of the people in her family in one room and book her mom and one of the kids in that other room so that you're. So you end up paying an adult price for the one kid that's in the room with mom or with grandma, but you still aren't paying for an extra person on top of the five people. [00:13:49] Speaker A: Our excellent travel agent recommended this and it's worked out great. We've done it on, we did it on the dream with her as well. We ran into. I discovered an issue with this, which is the photos. So I've, I've been buying the photo package and this time I realized that for my daughter, her photos, if the rest of us weren't in it, so her with her friend weren't automatically showing up. But they did. They were perfectly happy to include those in my package once I explained that. But the photos of her friend and her Mom. Were not included in our package. [00:14:22] Speaker C: Yeah. Now, there is a little tip and trick. I'll tell you for the photo package, if you have multiple rooms sailing together and you're linked, if you book the photo package package for one room in advance and don't book it for the others. But when you, if you go on board, go to shutters, tell them you'd like to purchase the photo package for the other staterooms, and they will get it at the onboard price, half price. They won't get it at the disc half price of the original discounted price, but it's still going to be less, less money. So that basically is. That way everyone in the family will be able to get those photos because as Miranda mentioned, if her daughter was in a picture that let's say she wasn't in or somebody else from her family was in, they weren't counted in that room package or in that photo package technically. So it's nice to hear that Disney helped make that. [00:15:12] Speaker A: They were so nice there. I mean, that's the theme with Disney cruises. And I knew that going in because I asked in your Facebook group and got some expert advice there. [00:15:19] Speaker C: Perfect. I love it. I love it. Yeah. Good plug for our Facebook group, Miranda. I love that as well. All right, well, let's start with the planning side of things. You know, were there things you wanted to book in terms of onboard experiences? You know, royal gathering, royalty with our adventure, tea with royalty excursions, all that good stuff. Were there anything that, you know as a. You are a silver cruiser booking window. So you're not the last group to book, but not the first group to book. Yeah. Were the things you wanted to book and were you able to accomplish that? [00:15:56] Speaker A: So that first cruise on the Magic, I knew nothing about this extra stuff, but I joined the Facebook group for the sailing and someone offered, said, anyone want a Royalty ticket? And I said, sure, I'll get it. And then I had massive sticker shock and thought, what on earth is this? But I still took my daughter. We were not dressed up the way everyone else is, but we thought it was delightful. So my dream sailing in April, being this was one of these sailings where it was right near when you guys went on the Treasure. And I had access silver to. I got cabanas, I got two cabanas, I got the royalty. I got everything I could think of. I got Palo brunch. And we really overdid it with extra stuff, both in terms of time and our onboard expenses. But loved, loved the royalty. Took my kids to bibbidi Boppity first and then did the royalty. So then we decided it's an absolute highlight for my daughter, so we wanted to do it again with her friend. So the girls did Bibbidi boppidi and then the whole family did adventure tea. I guess we'll talk about that later. We also bought. We didn't definitely no cabanas. There was so much stuff. Sold out. Palo Brunch was sold out. I did book Enchante Lunch. This sailing came soon after our wedding anniversary. My husband and I really like fancy tasting menu meals. Do them occasionally as special treats for our anniversary. So we actually we booked it for the second CD or the first sea day, second cruise day and wanted to change it to the last sea day. And it was really easy to do that once we got on board. [00:17:34] Speaker C: Awesome. All right, well, did you book any excursions through Disney? [00:17:38] Speaker A: Yes. So what I've learned from cruising with small kids is less is more. And booking too many excursions is exhausting. So we only left the ship twice. Once on Castaway, of course, with no excursions, and then in Cozumel and we booked the Atlantis submarine expedition. And it was excellent. Highly recommend it. [00:17:59] Speaker C: Very cool. Awesome. All right, well, let's dive in then. To the cruise. You are heading from New York, as we mentioned. How far in advance are you? Were you heading down to Port Canaveral or to the Orlando area? [00:18:13] Speaker A: We flew down the morning of. No, just teasing. Just teasing. We flew down the day before. [00:18:17] Speaker C: You're trying to give me a heart attack. [00:18:18] Speaker A: Yeah, Miranda, there was a post like that in the Facebook group and everyone guessed it must be a troll just trying to get. Get us. So we flew down the day before and stayed in Walt Disney World at Port Orleans Riverside, which was a really, really nice resort. [00:18:32] Speaker C: Nice. Get some beignets while you were there. [00:18:34] Speaker A: We did indeed. [00:18:35] Speaker C: I love it. Love it. Now, did you take Disney transportation to the port then? How did that. How did that go? [00:18:42] Speaker A: Beautifully. That was so smooth. We did in Fort Lauderdale. We did Disney transport as well for the Dream and did it this time. And overall, I'd say smoother and easier process both times. It was great. I'm a big fan of Disney transport. So they picked us up right from our resort. We did not go to. The bus was full of people from Riverside. We didn't go to any other resorts. No problem getting to the port. My kids enjoyed watching their cartoons and. Yeah, very smooth. Once we got to the port, though, it was very busy. Like, there was a line to check in, I think, because of all the transport vehicles, buses arriving at the same time. But then we got to board. We got upgraded through our little sheets, our little tickets to boarding group three that didn't show that for our port arrival forms. But we have the ticket. So don't throw away your little character ticket. Show them. And you get to board earlier. But by the time we were physically there, they were already onto group four or five, I think. [00:19:47] Speaker C: Nice. [00:19:47] Speaker A: Great. [00:19:48] Speaker C: Yeah. You still didn't have to wait for group, you know, 15 or whatever you would have had otherwise. Yeah, that's. That's always a really nice part of that Disney transportation. I also would put a plug in for Disney transportation. And by the way, Disney's not paying me any money for this. But when you have younger kids and you have, you know, car seats, booster seats, all of that kind of stuff that you would need to go in an Uber or in private transportation. Much easier to just deal with, you know, the bus, Disney transportation. And then you don't need those things. You don't need to schlep those things all the way from wherever you're coming from. [00:20:19] Speaker A: So massively overpacked for this trip. So it was so wonderful having the porter pick it up. And we ended up putting six items on the bottom of the bus and they just took it away from us. [00:20:29] Speaker C: So, yeah, I love. Yeah, it makes it so easy to just be like, I'll see my luggage once I'm on board and it'll be sitting outside my stateroom. Yeah, fantastic. All right, well, tell us, how was the. The check in process? Did all of that go smoothly? You mentioned Obviously they were boarding already, you know, group four or five by the time you all got through everything. So I imagine it's pretty quick. [00:20:50] Speaker A: Pretty quick. I mean, it's so fun. Everyone's so excited. Dressed in their Disney gear. I had my, like outrageous Disney cruise pants and then found someone in line wearing the exact same pants. I'll see if I can send you the picture. And then her children were wearing the same castaway pants, island print, castaway key print that my kids were wearing. It just was unbelievable. This cruise was full of people from the Northeast whose kids aren't in school yet, and people from England whose kids aren't in school yet. It seemed. [00:21:18] Speaker C: Oh, cool. That's kind of a fun mix, really. You know, and people all excited. [00:21:23] Speaker A: I so excited. [00:21:25] Speaker C: I think the outfits are always like a really fun thing to. It's sort of the people watching you can do at the port. And you see people are, you know, of course, wearing Their ears, wearing their matching T shirts or wearing their patterned, you know, Disney cruise wear. It's always like a fun part of the experience. [00:21:41] Speaker A: Buzzing with excitement. We had a tiny bit of a mishap, so I got very involved in the various fish extender exchanges on this cruise. And I had joined A Taste of Home. And I brought. So you're from the New York. You know all about this. I brought black and white cookies and rugala and packaged them myself into little bags. And they were, of course, taken from me because they weren't factory packaged. So it was a lot of money. Of delicious premium New York City treats. [00:22:10] Speaker C: Oh, that breaks my heart. [00:22:13] Speaker A: I know, I know. My, my, My family are like, well, why don't you do this? And I'm like, I just need some quiet time to myself or I'm going to start sobbing. Let's just keep going and get on board. [00:22:22] Speaker C: Oh, well, this is a good psa. I will say your mileage will vary with regard to this issue because sometimes we hear security enforcing that rule, and sometimes we hear security not enforcing that rule. But. Yeah, so. [00:22:38] Speaker B: But technically speaking, I don't know that I've heard of security. I've always heard that if it's not prepackaged, you can't bring it. [00:22:44] Speaker C: That's what the rule is. Yeah. [00:22:46] Speaker B: Yeah. And I just. I don't know that I've ever seen anyone get on with non prepackaged items. [00:22:50] Speaker C: I feel like in a lot of the Facebook groups, I see people talking about how they did something like what Miranda did, where they took something that was on, you know, made by a local bakery or whatever, and then they part of, like repackaged it into sort of individually packaging things. It might be. [00:23:08] Speaker B: I wonder if it would be better. I wonder if. I wonder if some of that could be. Bring it in the bakery box, you know, the closed plastic box that they put in the bakery and, and repackage it on board. That that might get you past security. [00:23:21] Speaker A: I wonder. That was my initial plan, and then I thought I was being smart and saving time. And some of the gifts we received were things like hard candies wrapped in cellophane. So that's not, you know, factory sealed, but no. [00:23:32] Speaker B: And I don't remember if it has to be. I don't know if it has to be factory sealed or just factory packaged. Right. Like, that's, that's kind of the. I think that might be the dividing line. [00:23:40] Speaker C: So I think they're very squishy with how they apply the rule. Well, how they actually enforce the Rules. I think it really depends who you're, who, who's like, line you're going through. Because I definitely have heard, you know, a variety of stories from people on. [00:23:55] Speaker B: Well, they've also renewed their prohibited items list past several months. Right. So they may be focusing more on some of this stuff than. [00:24:02] Speaker A: Right. With the alcohol changes, there might be more strict. Well, hopefully the port workers enjoyed my snacks. They probably ended up in garbage, but. [00:24:11] Speaker C: Oh, oh, that makes me so sad. So I, I have to give you a confession here. I'm actually not a black and white cookie fan. They. I know that's like sacrilegious because everybody from New York like pretty much loves black and white cookies, but I love, I love some ragala. [00:24:28] Speaker B: So just for our listeners, the language and the policy says you are welcome to bring non perishable snack foods. So they have to be non perishable. That might be another issue. In original factory sealed packaging, all items must either be consumed prior to returning to your home port or remain unopened. [00:24:46] Speaker A: Yeah, certainly perishable. [00:24:48] Speaker C: Although I have definitely seen people bring perishable foods all the time and never and not get that enforced. So yes, that's what the rules say. So if you, apparently if you bring something that doesn't fit in the rules tools, you may or may not be able to get it on. So just know that going in. All right. Well, Miranda, you mentioned fish extenders and you had told me pre show you had an entire suitcase filled with decor, door decor and fish extender. Tell us about this fish extender experience. I kind of want to know how far gone did we go? [00:25:24] Speaker A: So every sailing I've done, I've joined the Facebook group. So people make Facebook groups for individual sailings if the listeners don't know. And it's a great place to get information and great. They're usually great communities. And this one was extremely active and it spun off into a WhatsApp group. Since WhatsApp can be used on board, though a lot of people that wasn't working. We ended up buying Internet this sailing, but people were not having access to WhatsApp on board. And it was incredibly. [00:25:50] Speaker C: Can I interrupt you and give the psa? [00:25:52] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:25:52] Speaker C: So the PSA that I've been hearing is if you create an account through the, the Disney Cruise Line, even if you don't buy the WI FI package. But if you go through the process of sort of creating an account, a login, apparently you might still be able to use WhatsApp, but they're having it. It's definitely so you might not need to buy, but you may need to just sort of register. But I, I'm hearing, you know, it's, it. They have seemed to have locked it down in a different way than they ever had before. Before you never had to sort of do any logon. You could just use WhatsApp on the wi fi. [00:26:26] Speaker A: Yeah. Someone claimed they were told by a cast member that you can't be using both iMessage and WhatsApp from your same phone. I don't, I don't get it. Okay. [00:26:35] Speaker C: That's not true because I, I, I have always used both WhatsApp and iMessage because I have an iPhone on board. So, yeah, they're wrong about that. But I also, most of the time, most of the time, I will say not always, but most of the time we do buy a WI FI package because we're trying to, you know, post on socials and stay in touch with folks at home and things like that. But even when we' bought Internet, I have been able to use both. All right, sorry I interrupted you. The Facebook group, the official senders, very. [00:27:05] Speaker A: The admins of this group shout out to Chris and Ryan were very involved and they really made a nice community and very elaborate fish extender Exchange. I think 150 people total were involved, or maybe 150 cabins were involved. So we joined the general family. Fish extender Taste of home and magnet. And it was really fun. I. Giving these gifts is just, it brings a lot of joy to the experience. I'm not doing it for getting stuff in return, though. We got some handmade quilted pillows. Incredible stuff we got. It's just such a delight to give this stuff. We also, you know, like this. Through the Facebook group, a book club developed. And the leader of the book club was former guest Michelle, who was on talking about her medical evacuation with her mother. [00:27:55] Speaker C: Oh, my goodness. I love that. [00:27:58] Speaker A: So we realized we were both fans who she was before getting on board. So it was such a delight to meet her and her mother. I didn't meet her son because he was in Edge the whole time, but her mom is an absolute firecracker. That didn't come through in her story because we just assume, you know, an older woman who's ill, but her mom still works and is sassy. Oh, it was so fun. We read the woman in cabin 10, which is a questionable choice for a cruise about, about a murder on an elite cruise ship, luxury cruise ship, but that's hilarious. And we met in Periscope Pub, which was my recommendation after Doing all my research. And what a great space that was for a book club. [00:28:37] Speaker C: What a great idea. I love the idea of a book club on board. And I love that you met Michelle. She's hilarious. And I'm glad to hear her mom is doing well as well. [00:28:46] Speaker A: I was thrilled to be there. We barely discussed the book, of course. It was fun. Someone asked us if. I have to tell you, someone asked us if we were a coven. She said, oh, a book club. Does that mean you're a coven? And that was caused great delight. I didn't know there was a connection there. [00:29:02] Speaker C: I didn't know either. But, you know, I mean, I feel like that's what a good book club is, where you don't actually really talk about the book. It's just an excuse to get together. I love that. I gotta ask. You know, I did. I realized I forgot to ask you about, you know, your entrance into the ship. You're boarding the ship, but this was your first time on a wish class ship. So you had been on a magic class. On a dream class on the magic and the dream specifically. So you'd been in an atrium. You'd never been in a grand hall before, because that's what they call the atrium on the wish class. And there's a reason for it. What did you think when you walked into the grand hall on the Disney treasure? [00:29:39] Speaker A: I was blown away. So our first experience on the magic, I didn't know this was coming, but it was. We were in San Juan, so we boarded, like, on the balcony floor, and it just felt kind of hokey and silly. Small atrium. Anyways. Then I learned about it. Going on to the dream was. It got me in tears. I was so excited on the dream that I knew about. The whole scent of the cruise ship was really hit by that. So this. I thought I was prepared, and I couldn't believe it. The. The YouTube videos do not do the treasure justice. Everyone said, it's so beautiful. I was like, I don't know. I don't like that chandelier. But in person, it is astonishing. Those deep jewel tones and the velvet and the beautiful mosaic tile work. It is stunning. I didn't know what to do with myself. I needed a moment. [00:30:30] Speaker C: Oh, I love that. I agree with you. I don't think the videos or pictures do it justice. I wasn't sure it was gonna be my vibe when I first saw, like, the renderings, for example. And then walking onto it, I think is a completely different experience. It is really just so, so beautiful. [00:30:49] Speaker A: It is stunning. Captain Minnie was waving to us. I, like, had another moment. I agree. Captain Minnie is the absolute best. And I've subscribed to the DCL magazine and on that first episode they had that great article with all the information on the art on the Treasure. So it was so fun to see all that cool stuff in person. Oh, amazing. [00:31:11] Speaker C: That Jasmine in the stairwell. You know what I'm talking about? That digital art. Yes, that artist is incredible. And he has a wonderful piece of Black Panther on the Disney Destiny that's just as good if. I mean, maybe even better than the one of Jasmine on the Treasure. But yes, such great. Such great artwork. What was your first course of action? Are you heading to sit down? Lunch? Are you heading to Marsley Market? Pool deck, kids clubs. I mean, there's so many options when you first enter a Disney Cruise Line ship. What was your sort of goal? [00:31:47] Speaker A: We couldn't keep the kids off the slide. They went straight for the. Well, my adventurous younger son went straight for the slide. And then we ran around. Oh, that kids club is so cool. I think I wish they would do adult evenings in the Star wars area. [00:32:03] Speaker B: We. [00:32:03] Speaker A: That. It's so cool. That Star wars area is unbelievable. We also. I also wandered through the nursery part with the Small World and it's so cute in there. So then we managed to drag our children away. And this time we did pool deck food, which was. Was absolutely the right choice for our family. On the Dream, we did the sit down. I think that is an excellent option for adults or older kids. Time to relax. But for young kids, pool deck was perfect. And what is it? Mickey's festival of foods is phenomenal. We ate lunch at the pool deck every day. That food is incredible. [00:32:36] Speaker C: Yeah. I think on the wish class, I barely go into Marceline Market. I only go in there if I want to grab like some breakfast item. That's the only time I. And. And even that I don't. I'm not a big breakfast person, so I. I'm usually just coffee and then maybe I'll grab like a pastry or something from inside Marceline. But yeah, I think I. I feel like I never eat lunch in there. Not that there's anything wrong with it. Yeah. It's just the pool deck food is so good and you have so many options. [00:33:03] Speaker A: So easy. And yeah, I guess the time, whatever timing we were eating, it always. It never was crowded. It was great. It was perfect. Marceline. We never sat there as a family. The routine became that I would get up before everyone else and I would get breakfast. There and bring it back down to the room. We were eighth deck aft, which was just perfect location on the ship. And I loved Marceline. I thought it was so much nicer than cabanas. Mostly. The food is the same, but the theming is wonderful. It's nice having people serving you the food. I thought it was really, really good. And way, way more seating in there. It seemed even on busy times we could have sat down. Whereas on cabanas, I always felt there was never enough seating. [00:33:45] Speaker C: Absolutely. I think that there's also that kind of call it like secret space. But it's not really a secret. But it's like right after you walk in. If you kind of. Yeah, like not just the cafe. [00:33:54] Speaker A: Behind. [00:33:54] Speaker C: Behind. Yeah. So if you kind of. If you. When you. Right after you walk in, you see the cafe. Let's say you're walking in on the right hand side, you see the cafe to your left. Well, do kind of a U turn. If you do kind of a U turn, there's kind of these hidden wings. Yeah. And it's a huge sit further from the food. But there's always seating in that area. [00:34:14] Speaker A: Always window seating. And there's a drink station there too. [00:34:17] Speaker C: Yes, exactly. Exactly. I want to talk about your kids now. They are still young. Cruisers 4 and 6, I think you said. Right. How. How did they do in terms of like the cruise life? I mean, do they want to go to activities with you? Do they want to be in the kids club? Like, what are their. Do they want to meet characters? What are their kind of goals on the cruise? [00:34:39] Speaker A: Yes, all of the above. But as we say all the time, there's just way too many activities to do and not enough time. So we did not do nearly as many character meet and greets this time as we did on the Dream. My daughter's favorite is the various detective things. I've heard you say that Happy Hunt. Happy Hunts is often glitchy, but we had no problems with it. So she was delighted doing that game. [00:35:07] Speaker C: Yeah, Happy Hunt not as glitchy. The other one, the Uncharted Adventure. That's the super glitchy one. Not to say that Happy Hunt can sometimes have a glitch on like one or two of the things, but it's the Uncharted Adventure is the super, super glitchy. [00:35:21] Speaker A: We never made it to Uncharted Adventure because we had to do Happy Hunts with each different magic band. They loved it. And she had also loved Midship Detective Agency. She did say she preferred that one, but she was thrilled about Both of them. Yeah. [00:35:35] Speaker C: Well. And the reason why Uncharted Adventure is glitchy is because it pairs with a phone and so you have to use a smartphone and it's like you're basically the smartphone as the controller to play like different video games on different screens around the ship. I think it's a. If you're going to do it, it's a. Probably better for an older kid anyway. But I still think it's. If it works really well, it's kind of cool. But it doesn't usually work very well. [00:36:00] Speaker B: So it's like technology. When technology works, it's great. When it doesn't, it's annoying and frustrating. I mean I had some of that with the. Yeah. The Happy Haunts game. We've. [00:36:08] Speaker C: You had. You had it with the Happy Hunt. [00:36:10] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. We've obviously experienced it with that. What was the name of it again? Sam. The. The other one that's on the Uncharted Adventure. That's the one. [00:36:19] Speaker C: I think that's right. [00:36:20] Speaker A: Yeah. You need a very well charged magic band for it to work though. So if it's glitching. We found it. Go charge it. [00:36:26] Speaker C: Yes. And also you need to make sure you've updated the Software on your MagicBand. It won't actually let you use it if you're sort of not on the. Updated. [00:36:34] Speaker B: For me, there were definitely like, there were definitely props that were broken and like as soon as you told the crew then suddenly they'd be coming over and they'd be chatting up. Yeah, it's bro. They call somebody, they come fix it. But you know, it, it's. It's annoying. It's. It's one of those things where it's like to do the storytelling and the entertainment. Disney like over engineered things a bit. Right. To make it cooler. Overengineering always leads to bugs and issues and so. Yeah, yeah. [00:36:59] Speaker C: Right. Which is why the Midship Detective Agency is still always going to be the best. It's actually like lower level, technologically speaking. But it's like because of that it always works. Right. It's very. Yeah. It's a very sort of reliable game and works really. All right. So they, they loved your. Your daughter loves doing the game. Some character meet and greets. What about kids clubs? Do they both or the kids. [00:37:23] Speaker A: Sam, my little one, Sam, a boy. He love. He. [00:37:28] Speaker C: What a great name. Miranda. [00:37:29] Speaker A: What a great name. Yes. [00:37:30] Speaker B: He. [00:37:31] Speaker A: I mean we put him in there and we have to pull him out to get him to eat. He loves it. Hannah, the eldest, she was less Enthusiastic. She went a few times but was less enthusiastic. She said it's because she doesn't like that she's separated from him because he's still in the threes and fours group. So I guess next year we'll find out. I don't know. She's very outgoing at school, at camp, but, well, she was so focused on the happy Hunt, so it was hard to convince her to do otherwise. [00:37:58] Speaker C: She just wanted to come out and play that with you. [00:38:00] Speaker A: I know. And we, you know, I keep envisioning I'm going to just put them in the kids club and have adult relaxation time, but it always ends up I'm just enjoying spending time with them. So, yeah, [00:38:11] Speaker C: if you're listening to us right now, chances are pretty good that you love Disney vacations as much as we do. The crew that handles the planning so you can focus on relaxing. [00:39:20] Speaker C: You did get to go to Enchantee, which is what I would want to talk about next. You. You had lunch at Enchante. You mentioned you and your husband. Like us, you're a bit of foodies, like to go to a, you know, a nice elevator, elevated dinner experience or lunch experience for a special occasion. What did you think of Enchante? You hadn't done Remy before, I take it on the dream. [00:39:43] Speaker A: Yeah, it was incredible. So we so palo on the dream. We followed all your recommendations, ordered as you recommend. We had a great time. My husband was a little snobby though, and was like Eh, this just feels like a normal restaurant. I mean, we're spoiled. We live in New York City. But I convinced him to do this enchante with me, and then also convinced him that we definitely needed the, the top level tasting menu and the wine pairing and champagne to start. And. Oh, it was exquisite. I think it was as good as any other fancy tasting menu I've ever done. I'm very spoiled. For. For a milestone birthday a few years ago, I went to like, the newest fancy restaurant in, in Napa Sonoma. And it felt exactly, exactly the same. It's very formal, very French, very formal. But they're so like amiable and friendly. It didn't feel stuffy or awkward. This, it's like two to one servers to guests in there. They're just, they're all French. They're just so carefully taking care of you. And the food was incredible. Our server, Diana, who was wonderful, said, I don't remember the name of the executive chef, but the Michelin, the person with the three Michelin stars who designed the menu. She told us she was serving him just the month prior because he comes on board every quarter to make sure the food is up to his standards. So, yeah, it was amazing. [00:41:05] Speaker C: Yeah, he works with the chef de cuisine to like, tweak things on the menu and also to make sure that, like, the ingredient level is right, the service level is right. Yeah, he's on board on a regular basis, so it's just fantastic because, you know, he's got to go to all of the ships because he is the executive chef for both Remy and for Oxford. [00:41:25] Speaker A: Oh, he is, yeah. [00:41:26] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:41:27] Speaker B: Wow. [00:41:27] Speaker C: Yeah, he also, he's also part of Victoria and Albert. So. So it's. Yeah, it's a. He's got, he's got a lot of [00:41:35] Speaker A: responsibility, responsibilities, and Disney has such reach. I mean, amazing the people they can pull on board. [00:41:40] Speaker C: They do have like, on each of the ships, though, they do have like the. I think they call it the chef de cuisine, but essentially a head. A head chef always on a ship as well. But he's the executive who oversees all of it and makes sure it's up to standards. [00:41:54] Speaker A: But yeah, I don't know which course was the best. Each one was better than the last. And then with the design, we had about 50 desserts, including a special anniversary cake. Though I will say, my experience in the past is if you do do the wine pairing, you've gotta be ready to be escorted home. It's not, it's not good for the liver. But she told us that they were much smaller pours and the total would be about two and a half glasses total. And we, we took a long nap after this experience. But we were not, you know, inappropriately obliterated for being on a family cruise. [00:42:25] Speaker B: Anytime we've had a wine pairing at dinner at like Remy Remy, Enchante or Palo, I always go back and I'm the one who thinks like man, the seas are really rough today because I'm bouncing all over the hallway. It's not the seas, it's just me. It's just me. [00:42:41] Speaker A: Well, we didn't do any drink tastings. I think those are much more heavy handed with the quantity. [00:42:45] Speaker B: Those, those are. I, I, I have enjoyed drink tastings but they are the they you, you are getting value for money with the amount of liquor and the quality of it that they're giving you. [00:42:54] Speaker A: For sure. Yeah. The cost of ancient was slightly shocking. I think it is the most exp. We've ever had. But if you're prepared for it, it is well worth it. We did not make it to Hooks Barbary. I was so excited to go for an Old Fashioned but because we had early dining, it just, it just never worked. [00:43:11] Speaker B: Yeah, I would say for, for Enchante. The one thing to keep in mind for folks out there is it is sticker shock when you're on board and you're comparing it to like Palo or something like that. But if you actually extract it and compare it to like you know, like a one or maybe even two Michelin starred restaurant on land, you're, you're, you're doing very well in terms of what the bill looks like. [00:43:30] Speaker A: So it's true. I don't know if I've had a three Michelin star meal ever. [00:43:33] Speaker B: I don't know if we have. I don't know if we have. I don't think we have done one and two. [00:43:37] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, we've only been to one and two. There's not that many in the U.S. they're not many in the U.S. outside of the U.S. there's a, of course there's only a handful in the world of three Michelin star restaurants, but there's very few in the United States. [00:43:50] Speaker B: But Miranda lives in the home of restaurants. [00:43:53] Speaker C: Yeah, it's basically New York, San Francisco, Chicago have the, I think New York [00:43:58] Speaker A: only has, has maybe one. [00:44:00] Speaker C: Well it might only have one three Michelin star restaurant. Yeah, it's most of, I mean most of most restaurants with any Michelin stars only have one. That's very hard. [00:44:12] Speaker B: Per se. Per SE is in New York, but [00:44:14] Speaker C: it doesn't have three anymore. [00:44:15] Speaker A: Not only star, they honestly lost a star. [00:44:17] Speaker B: They got sneezed in the New York Times. Yeah. [00:44:19] Speaker A: Yes. [00:44:20] Speaker C: Yeah. That was a few years ago. Well, Miranda, I'd love to hear how what you guys thought of the regular dining experience. We of course talk about the elevated dining experience, which we have talked about this before. I'm going to tell people again. Enchante. And Remy, not for everyone. If you are not an adventurous eater, skip it. It's a fantastic experience if you like a real chef tasting menu where you completely give yourself over to the chef. But if you are not an adventurous eater, please skip it because I don't want you to spend your money and then just be disappointed. If you like an elevated Italian meal, Paulo is accessible for everyone. But how do you feel about main din? How was the experience on board? [00:45:05] Speaker A: I don't sound like too much of a Disney cheerleader, but we had. [00:45:08] Speaker C: Okay, you're talking to Disney cheerleaders. [00:45:11] Speaker A: We had a tremendously good main dining experience. Loved all of it. [00:45:15] Speaker C: Yeah. What did the kids think of the Coco shows? You got, of course, two different Coco shows and then you've got Marvel shows as well. What did the kids think? [00:45:25] Speaker A: I think Marvel was their favorite. They loved it. But we had a great experience because my Spider man, obsessed with 4 year old, wore his Spider man costume to the first Marvel dinner. He was cheered by the whole dining staff as we arrived. I wish I had thought to video record it, but I was too late. And then we had a magical moment with Spider man when he came running through at the end. Everyone knew I had told my family this was going to happen. So we were just like eagerly anticipating it. Sammy also had ears. Spider man ears on top of his Spider man mask. So Spider man said Spider Man. [00:46:05] Speaker C: Hi. [00:46:06] Speaker A: Oh, I love your ears. I've got to get those too. And it just. Those character actors are so good. [00:46:13] Speaker C: So good, so good. I love when the kids are like dressed in theme for whatever restaurant. Like our son will never do that. He's not big on costume or even bounding. I can get him to bound by just setting out clothes that I tell him to wear. But he's. He will never do that himself. But he's not a costume kid and has never really been a costume kid other than for like Halloween maybe for Purim, which is a Jewish holiday. Kind of like Halloween for those listening who don't know. But anyway, yeah, not really, not really a dress up kid. But I. I love it. I wish I Wish I had a kid who would dress like Spider man or, you know, I think that. [00:46:53] Speaker A: I think the bounding costumes, the fun Disney themed outfits are like an absolute highlight of Disney cruising for me. I really enjoy it. Go all in. Like, I was expecting my kids to like Coco more. The adults loved Coco. I don't think they didn't like it. They just weren't nearly. But they haven't seen the movie or they've seen the movie and it's too scary for them. They say I had not seen the movie and we watched it leading up to the cruise and I don't. It's so good. It's such a good one. So loved, loved that restaurant. [00:47:23] Speaker C: I do think it is more. Not that it is a little scary for kids your. For your kids age. Pixel movies are fraught. [00:47:32] Speaker A: Pixar movies are scary for me as an adult in like very, I mean, Disney movies. [00:47:37] Speaker C: Right. Like, we have lots of dead parents. Like, what's going on? [00:47:41] Speaker A: Scary monsters, they're. Yeah, they hit you hard. Up. I rewatched up before this trip and oh my, that one's brutal in terms [00:47:48] Speaker C: of I have to fast forward the first five minutes of that movie anytime I watch it. I can't watch the beginning. I just been bawling, bawling every time I watch the beginning of that movie. Well, what about. Let's talk about the ports and then we'll say we. [00:48:01] Speaker A: We also love 1923. [00:48:02] Speaker C: Oh yeah. [00:48:03] Speaker A: I thought the food there was inventive and excellent. We had our formal night there and I had a Jasmine Bound since it's her ship. We had a great experience at 1923. [00:48:14] Speaker C: I love that. Yeah, it's. I think. And the decor is really cool if you get a chance to look around. Of course. [00:48:19] Speaker A: We had a great service server team. Our first Disney cruise. Our servers were. I don't know what was going on there, but they were not up to snuff. And since then we've had great ones. And it makes such a difference. [00:48:31] Speaker C: It does, it does. [00:48:32] Speaker A: I think it's important to arrive early to make sure your food, your orders get in quickly. [00:48:36] Speaker C: Yes. And I definitely think that your servers can be a big part of making or breaking your cruise. Stateroom attendant can also be like a really amazing person that you can make a connection with, but less so in terms of. Unless they forget to stock like certain items in your room, it's probably not going to make or break your cruise. But your dining team. Absolutely. Because if you. Yeah. If things are really slow or they get your orders Wrong. Constantly or things like that. Like that can really, of course, impact your, you know, how much fun you have. All right, we're going to jump off the ship and then we'll jump back on the ship because of course there's more to talk about on board. But Castaway and Cozumel, um, let's start with, I mean, let's, let's start with the best and just start with Castaway. You had been to Castaway before on one of your previous sailings once. [00:49:30] Speaker A: And that was a time that we had the Mickey and Minnie cabana. [00:49:32] Speaker C: Oh, sweet. Yeah. How did this castaway day go? [00:49:36] Speaker A: I was disappointed. Hot Take. My husband and I both like Lookout so much more. Castaway is crowded. We really had a hard time. What we're doing not. We're slow in the morning as a family and by the time we got to the beach it was really hard to find chairs. I feel we didn't, we chose. We only stayed like an hour and a half and then went back and ate on board because I just felt like cookies or whichever one it was was kind of meh. I, I think Lookout is beautiful. Beautiful beach. The, the facilities are beautiful. Rush out. Gushout is fun. There's so many easily accessible bars and bathrooms. So I'm a, I'm a lookout girl, it turns out. [00:50:16] Speaker C: Apparently I listen. I think they both have their pluses and minuses. You live in New York. You're, you're used to walking. So that's probably not, not at all a thing that is going to discourage you from going someplace. [00:50:30] Speaker A: It's beautiful. It's rough with small kids again, because we're not good at routine timing. We never managed to get a red wagon. And so if we go to Lookout again, we'll bring our own wagon. [00:50:40] Speaker C: Yeah, that's a good, that's a good call. Well, let's talk about your excursion at Cozumel. You did an Atlantis. I forget the name of it. Tell us again. [00:50:49] Speaker A: Submarine trip. So Atlantis is a company. I think they have 17 sites throughout the world. This is the only one in Mexico. Well, they kept saying the only legal one in Mexico. And it is a submarine. And it must have fit maybe 40 people or so. We had a short van ride to the port and then they took us on a nice little boat ride, maybe a 20 minute boat ride to where the submarine sits. And then we entered it through a large porthole and then a ladder going down. My whole seven person travel group went. And I'd say there were many other smallish kids on Board and my mom's in her 70s and she had no problem with this whatsoever. We did observe one other kid, kid in tears going down the ladder. It was pretty scary. But then we all have little portholes to look through. There's a narrator explaining everything to us. And we go down to 105ft. And it goes so quickly. The only. It doesn't feel. You don't feel any pressure whatsoever. It doesn't feel like you're under. Feels like you're barely underwater. The light, the colors change. Of course you lose everything but blues. They had little rainbows at each seat, which we were confused by. But then we realized it's because at the bottom you can't see that red is red. It just looks dark gray. And they show you around the reef. The reef there is not exquisite. It's a reef. There's. They're pointing out some of the sea life. Then they take us to the edge of the trench where it's like 2,000ft straight down to peak there. And then they take you to an intentional shipwreck which has become an artificial reef. It was cool. Probably only an hour, less than an hour in total. My kids loved it. They keep talking about being 140ft deep. 105ft deep. [00:52:32] Speaker C: Oh, I love that. [00:52:33] Speaker A: So I highly recommend. It wasn't terribly expensive. I think maybe 130 per adult in 85 or so for kid maybe possibly less. So a great option. [00:52:43] Speaker C: Yeah. Well, and. And as you mentioned, sort of less is more with young kids. You mentioned that at the top of the show. So picking an excursion that's shorter in length of time and has maybe if. Even if it has a bus ride. If it's a shorter bus ride. [00:52:56] Speaker B: Right. [00:52:56] Speaker C: Like, like think about that when you're planning your cruise. Like don't book with young kids, you know, four and six year old. Unless your kids have like incredible stamina. Don't book that eight hour long short excursion. [00:53:09] Speaker A: Yeah, well, most of the beach excursions say they're five hours. And we decided, yeah, we wanted to have an. Exactly. Too long for my kids. [00:53:19] Speaker C: Yeah. And even the five hour one, it's like at least 45 minutes probably on either end the day of, of like bus riding and waiting. Just like waiting and get loading onto buses. And so you end up not actually [00:53:33] Speaker B: the stuff the kids love the most. Let's wait for a bus. [00:53:35] Speaker C: Let's wait for a bus and then sit on a bus. [00:53:37] Speaker A: And they're pretty cheeky eaters and they know they love Disney cruise food. So. Exactly and so Grand Cayman is a tender port. So I decided as much as I'd love to go to Grand Cayman, I just would skip it. My mom did get off and walk around. Is it Georgetown, I think, or the town there? She enjoyed that. And then Freeport, Jamaica. What I read in the online group is that Jamaica is a rough terrain, so it's a lot of long, bumpy car rides. And my kids are prone to emotion sickness in cars, so we just didn't want to. We did explore the port area, which is nice if you want to buy knickknacks. [00:54:15] Speaker C: Yeah. Or run. Exactly. But remember, Disney Cruise Line is going to take it from you and then give it back to you once you're disembarking. So you can. You can't bring on. You can bring it back with you. You can bring alcohol back with you, wine, liquor, beer, whatnot, but you can't actually take it with you to your stateroom. Disney's gonna hold that for you until the end of your cruise. And then you gotta remember to pick it up at the end or you've just wasted whatever money you spent on it. Well, Miranda, let's jump back on board the ship. I gotta ask about shows. My favorite part of a Disney cruise. I'm curious first whether your kids were into the shows, if they went with you or if they spent time in the K. And then, you know, what you all thought of the shows. [00:54:58] Speaker A: They came with us. I think next cruise, I think we might switch and try being late dining people so that they can be more alert, like feed them pool, food, early dinner, then shows. That's what we're going to try next time. But they did really well. But in April on the Dream, my daughter, who's six, she loved the shows. Golden Mickey's was her favorite. And Beauty and the Beast was a [00:55:21] Speaker C: big scary part over Beauty and the Beast. Oh, God. [00:55:23] Speaker A: It was too scary. [00:55:24] Speaker C: Too scary. [00:55:24] Speaker A: She hasn't. Yeah, she's very sensitive. [00:55:26] Speaker C: I mean, the wolf. Wolves are kind of scary. [00:55:28] Speaker A: Yeah, the wolves, the wolves. And then what's the. Oh, believe is the other one, which is my least favorite. Fleet Wide, then. But my son kept falling asleep at the shows. But this one, they both stayed awake and they both loved it. We learned our family hack, which is to sit in the balcony. So we went 45 minutes early to the balcony and managed to get like a row or two back, which is better with kids because the railing doesn't block them right in the center. So it was perfect. Perfect seating. And the shows were phenomenal. Susie Adventure. I prefer Golden Mickeys over Susie Adventure, but Susie Adventure is good. [00:55:59] Speaker C: Wow. [00:56:00] Speaker A: Cute. Love the Sensational Six. I think you like it because they sing the song from Hercules. [00:56:07] Speaker C: Yes. I love all of the musical number. I love the musical numbers in all of the shows, regardless. Even the shows that I don't like as much. Like Believe, for example. I still think the musical numbers are phenomenal. I like Seize the Adventure. Well, I love Captain Mickey, and I love Goofy and all of that, but I actually really love Go with the Flow, the Crush song, which is fun. The musical they do at Animal Kingdom. Actually, it's actually. Yeah. I love that song. I love the Big Pup. I love the use of puppetry in that show. I also love that the show is shorter because I think it's a great introduction to Disney Cruise Line performances for kids. For adults. Adults. I think it's phenomenal. But. Yeah, but of course, you got to [00:56:56] Speaker A: see the Beast again. [00:56:59] Speaker C: Yeah. [00:57:00] Speaker A: They had them on day five and day six, or six and seven, whichever. The last two nights. And you're. You're exhausted by that point. I wish they were earlier. I get it. But absolutely love them. Moana really blew us all away with the puppetry. It was really, really cool. The Taka to Te Fiti transition. I mean, I was in tears for a lot of Moana. I loved it. And then Beauty and the Beast the second time around was just. I love that show. I actually preferred it on the Dream, I think, because of the individual actors. But it's so immersive. Being in the balcony was great for that. Immersive. Especially Moana, when the grandmother, Manta Ray, swims around on the ceiling. Oh, beautiful. [00:57:46] Speaker C: I love that. Oh, I like. I want to go back now on the Treasure. And I don't have anything booked on the Treasure anytime soon, but you're making me want to go back on the treasure. The problem is there's just too many ships and not enough vacation time or vacation dollars to go on. [00:58:02] Speaker A: All of these are costly trips. Exactly. I know, that's. I can't wait to go back on the Treasure. But I imagine it'll be many years from now. Too many other ships to try. [00:58:10] Speaker C: Absolutely. What were the kids favorite things? You mentioned your daughter loved the Happy Hunt. What was your son's favorite thing? [00:58:16] Speaker A: Board. I'd say the kids club. Yeah, he just loved it in there. And anything. Spider Man. And he loved Worlds of Marvel restaurant. He keeps asking if he can watch Guardians of the Galaxy. He cannot yet, but he's really into learning about Marvel and me and my husband, we're big Marvel fans. [00:58:37] Speaker C: Nice. Now because you stayed on board for one full port day and then sort of partial port days. Did you guys spend a lot of time up on that pool deck with the. The kids? [00:58:46] Speaker A: I guess not as much as I expected. Well, yes, we did. So I think that pool deck is excellent, but I was not spending time in the adult. I know there's complaints about the adult area. They've got many more pools that didn't feel like people soup. They. They were nice. We. I enjoyed going in those pools and the slide. I thought it was all great. And in the past, I've kind of avoided the pools because they just wear kids soup and they didn't want to be involved. [00:59:12] Speaker C: I think the wish class layout for the pool does other than the adult area. The adult area is. I get the complaints. It is smaller. I like the adult area. It's just too. It can get really crowded. But the way that they've laid out the pool deck for the family area. Yeah, it's just better. And the sight lines are better for watching your kids. And then you have more small pools rather than just like the one or two pools of kids soup. So, yeah, a much, much better. [00:59:42] Speaker A: Well, as you keep describing, everything on the Treasure is more. More smaller spaces. And I think it really works and fun. I mean, I just love Funnel Vision. Funnel Vision is my husband's favorite thing about Disney Cruise. It's so fun. [00:59:55] Speaker C: Love it. Now, did you guys get to do any of, like, the family trivias, family game shows, those sorts of activities? [01:00:01] Speaker A: We didn't do any family ones. My husband and I managed to catch one. General trivia we did terribly. And then the music through the ages, which was so fun. We got more than. Both times. We got more than 50%. Right. So I guess that's pretty good, but nowhere near winning. [01:00:17] Speaker C: That's pretty good. The people who win are getting like 20 out of 20. So it's. It's. It's crazy. It's crazy. [01:00:23] Speaker A: Yeah. They needed multiple tie rounds for the general trivia because everyone kept getting everything right. [01:00:29] Speaker C: It's kind of crazy. I mean. And the Disney trivia is even worse. I don't mean. This is not a bad thing. This is not a criticism of the trivia. The trivia is really fun. It's just a matter of, like, the people who are doing the Disney trivias are so hardcore, they know the answer to every question. You know, I've said this before on the show. People are like, oh, you guys must Win Disney trivia on the ships. And it's like, absolutely not. [01:00:54] Speaker B: Because the people who I don't even show up. [01:00:58] Speaker C: Yeah, we have done it. We've done some, you know, once in a while we've gone to a couple of, like, Disney Parks trivias because friends that we're sailing with have wanted to, but we never do. Well, it's not. Yeah, it's not a thing for us. We like trivia. We like. But as I've said before, we. We're good at brain teasers, we're good at general knowledge. And then we have won Disney Cruise Line trivia a couple of times, but not every time. They're. The questions are quite. Can be quite, quite hard. Well, Miranda, what have we missed? I. I feel like we. I feel like you guys did so much on those ships. [01:01:35] Speaker A: We've been home all week and I'm still exhausted. We did. Did several coriander and sage activities, including the adventure tea. And I. I don't know. They didn't really hit. They didn't really work for me. I don't know if it was this duo. It just felt so hokey. We did the Jungle cruise one choose wisely as the adult one and then the. The tea and it felt kind of hokey and forced. So I don't know. [01:02:01] Speaker C: I have to tell you that this. The female. I'm trying to remember, I think she's coriander and he's sage. Or is it backwards? Yeah, he's. So I don't think she's as good as other. And I. The one that you're talking about, I think is the one we saw in April. I think. I don't think the cast has changed over. [01:02:21] Speaker A: I thought she was. She was my. [01:02:23] Speaker C: Oh, you like the two. Interesting. But they weren't. [01:02:27] Speaker A: I don't know. [01:02:28] Speaker C: I don't. It's. They're either good, don't get me wrong. They just weren't. My favorite of the. Of the duo is that we've seen in terms of storytelling. [01:02:38] Speaker A: It didn't bring a ton from my experience. And the adventure tea, well, Tiana brought us beignets, so that was lovely. And it's so cute seeing the princesses in their adventure outfits. The adventure tea is such a phenomenal way to have one on one character time. But I think I kind of feel that was a one and done for my family. It's so expensive. And I like the princess one better now. [01:03:00] Speaker C: Did the kids like the gifts at least? So for those who haven't heard the. There are different Tea experiences. One is called. This one's called the. The Royal Royal Adventure Tea. With Royalty. With royalty versus Or Olaf's Picnic on the. On the Wish. So there's a couple of different ones, and they have different gifts depending upon the theming. Now, like the dream and the fantasy one is exactly the same. Same gifts, that sort of thing. But. But some of. There are some differences across the fleet. And so different gifts. If you have a different. If it has a different name, it has different gifts. Gifts. That's the best way to clue in. But it is like $230 for a kid, and then like $80 or $90 or something for each adult. And it's all, like, sweet foods. There's actually no tea at the tea. It's kind of tea themed. [01:03:53] Speaker A: Like, real tea comes with tea. [01:03:54] Speaker C: Oh, it does. Okay. All right. Well, there's no tea at the Adventure. [01:03:58] Speaker A: Zero Tea. [01:03:59] Speaker C: Zero Tea. And I love tea, so I would want. But they do have, like, the tea sandwiches. And then they have all of these like. Like sweet. Yes. And they're very beautiful. But I gotta tell you, and this is a hot take. I think all of those desserts are trash. And I'm not a dessert person, so maybe that's why. But, like, everything is so sweet. [01:04:17] Speaker B: It's like all trash. [01:04:19] Speaker C: I mean, it's so sweet. They're beautiful. They're like the. Like, they look incredible, but then they're like, oh, sweet. Too much. Yeah, the kids like it. Okay, well, that tells you sticks. That tells you whose palette they're going for. Right? They're going for, like, all the ultra sweet end of things. It is a fun performance. And the princesses come around for the adventure tea with royalty. And as they do in the royal tea on board the classic ships. All right, well, I mean, you guys, did you packed in a ton. Were you. Do you regret not having a cabana this time? You were kind of spoiled by cabana. [01:04:57] Speaker A: We were so spoiled. I mean, I do think the cabana is a wonderful luxury, but then you miss out with all the other programming. So I would do it again if I could, but I wasn't sad to miss it. [01:05:10] Speaker C: All right, makes sense. Now, you mentioned you hit up the Indiana Jones Choose Wisely show. I understand the storytellers weren't maybe your favorite. They're a little bit hokey this time around. But did you like the show? [01:05:24] Speaker A: Show, I think. I mean, it was fun. Yeah. As having seen the Indiana Jones movies. It. It was fun. I don't. I'll have to see it. Again, see if I like it better with different performers. [01:05:35] Speaker C: Well, and if you go on the Destiny, you got to see with Great Power, the Marvel themed show that is different and similar. If I could, you know, it's a. Again, it's like a interactive show in a different way and with the two storytellers on board. [01:05:53] Speaker A: Lobby was beautiful, though. Another one that doesn't translate through videos. The quality of that screen and then the decorations, it's stunning. And overall, I thought the layout of the ship was kind of genius, where everything's like, it's centralized with the different spaces around it. I thought it was great. [01:06:11] Speaker C: Now, did you get to go into the Haunted Mansion parlor? [01:06:15] Speaker A: Yeah, we went as a family that afternoon at the first. First Sea Day and had no problem. We walked in and within two minutes, a family left and we got the seat right in front of the fish tank and we stayed for a full cycle. You are correct. The drinks in there, my mom and I got the secret menu to drink one and it was a little bit hard to finish. It's way too sweet. The cruise specific beers on board are really good. Loved it in there. Was sassy with my server and got myself a death certificate, which seems like a very high offer. Absolutely loved it in there, but was shocked at how tiny it is. I thought it was twice as big based on videos. It is a tiny, intimate speakeasy. [01:06:57] Speaker C: Yeah, it's a. I mean, it's such a cool decorated space, but yeah, like they, they. They pulled out all the stops in. In decor and, you know, in special [01:07:09] Speaker A: effects, all of that, the paintings start melting. Like, it's unbelievable. Unbelievable. [01:07:13] Speaker C: So good. So good. All right, well, I feel like we've reached that point in the show. What do you think, Brian? [01:07:18] Speaker B: I think we have. I think so. Miranda, we have reached that point in the show where I need to hand you back over to Sam for some arbitrary questions, some arbitrary rules, and usually more than a dash of judgment for the round we call rapid fire. Sam, take it away. [01:07:32] Speaker C: I think she'll do okay. She already clued me and she doesn't like, believe, so we're on the same page there. [01:07:36] Speaker B: I feel like she's digging out of a hole. With you around the golden Mickeys, I'm [01:07:41] Speaker C: still looking for brownie points with you, [01:07:43] Speaker B: so I'm still looking for feedback from our listeners. I have done rapid fire a couple of times. Would you like us to switch it up occasionally or do you only want to hear Sam's version? [01:07:52] Speaker A: You let us know yours is more gentle. [01:07:56] Speaker C: Brian, people don't People don't like gentlemen. [01:07:59] Speaker B: I care about the guest experience, [01:08:02] Speaker C: but I think. I think the reason people like it is because I. I am very friendly and bubbly, and then I give you judgment at the end, and I think people enjoy that dichotomy, Brian, so. [01:08:13] Speaker A: Well, you're a New Yorker. That's how we roll. [01:08:15] Speaker C: Exactly. Exactly. It's how we roll. We're friendly, and we also tell it to you like it is. All right, Miranda, we're going to start with your Disney favorites. [01:08:24] Speaker A: I can't tell you how much time this rapid fire has spent, how much emotional energy I have spent on this. An embarrassing amount. Ranking things is extremely hard for me, but I'm ready. I am ready. [01:08:38] Speaker C: We're going to start with your favorite Disney character. Disney means anything and everything. Disney owns Moana. Love it. All right, what is your favorite Disney movie? Same rules. [01:08:48] Speaker A: Encanto. [01:08:49] Speaker C: Oh, awesome. All right. Favorite Disney song. [01:08:52] Speaker A: And now I'm blanking on what it's called. It's the 1 in frozen 2 at the end with Elsa when she finds out she's the sixth or the fifth spirit. [01:09:00] Speaker C: Yes. It's. Is it into the unknown? [01:09:04] Speaker A: No, it's the early one. [01:09:06] Speaker C: It's the other one. [01:09:07] Speaker A: This is so embarrassing. [01:09:08] Speaker C: That's. [01:09:08] Speaker B: All right. [01:09:09] Speaker C: All right. That's. Og. All right, we're. Got it. All right, moving on to Disney Cruise Line. And of course, for Disney Cruise Line, you got to answer with one of the ships that you've been on or spaces you've, you know, been in. So not. Not. Don't pick something from a ship that you haven't been on. So you can't pick anything off the wonder or the wish or the fantasy or, I guess, the adventure. Destiny. You got to get on the Destiny because that. That Spider man kid that Sam needs to be on. On the Destiny. Destiny. Because Spider man is everywhere. All right, well, moving on to the ships, what is your favorite Disney Cruise Line stage show? You have a couple of really great ones to choose from. [01:09:46] Speaker A: It's Beauty and the Beast. [01:09:47] Speaker C: Yes. I love it. I love it. [01:09:49] Speaker A: It cannot be. Moana is phenomenal, but it's Beauty and the Beast always and forever. Those puppets with the actors behind them, it just. It sounds like it would never work, but it works. [01:10:00] Speaker C: It works so, so, so well. I. [01:10:03] Speaker A: Your guest. Oh, my goodness. [01:10:05] Speaker C: I do not understand, like, how we don't have more puppetry in theater. I feel like it's just, like, I know this is such a weird tangent to go off on, but, like, Avenue Q was one of the best musicals, like, ever. [01:10:21] Speaker A: But yes, of course. [01:10:23] Speaker C: It's so good. If it ever comes back to New York, you must go. Miranda. It was just. It just did a run on the West End. It came back to London. Um, but it doesn't have a permanent, like, space right now. And it's just. It's so good. And I just feel like, you know, that one's sort of like, dirty version of Sesame Street. Let's put it out there. So it's not really. It's not really kid friendly, but I just think more puppetry is needed. And Disney Cruise Line is like, the only company out there who's really. And Disney on Broadway as well, but really sort of leveling up and leaning into puppetry and. And, you know, Jim Henson would be so proud. I feel like it's just. Yeah. Such a cool art form. All right, moving on. [01:11:07] Speaker A: Show yourself. [01:11:07] Speaker C: Show yourself. That's it. Good. Thank you. All right, well, because that was gonna. That was gonna plague me for the rest of the day until I looked. I was gonna look until I got to Google. Exactly. All right, well, let's move over to activities on board. What's your favorite? Not. Not Happy Hunt that your daughter loves. Not the kids club. Or Spider man that your son loves? Not your husband's favorite. What's your favorite activity on board? A Disney cruise. [01:11:33] Speaker A: So Disney I'm thinking about. So cruising in general, it is walking on the pool deck or the promenade deck, either early at sunrise or in the evening when it's quiet and it just feels magical being out on the ocean. I love that. What makes Disney so special, I think, is just the people on board, the other guests and the staff, and I just talk my head off to strangers. You know, you're around all these other parents who are in the thick of it with you, and it's so easy to talk to them. And the staff are so friendly. So I think interacting with cast members, characters, and fellow passengers is my favorite thing on Disney. [01:12:21] Speaker C: I love that. And I think that this is, like, people don't understand New Yorkers. And because we're both New Yorkers, Miranda, we understand each other. But, like, I. I will talk to any stranger. Like, and on a Disney cruise, it's the best because we know we have this one thing in common, at least I never would. Yeah. [01:12:41] Speaker A: Here in New York City? [01:12:42] Speaker C: No. No. It's just weird. [01:12:44] Speaker A: Everyone's too busy. You don't stop and talk to people. [01:12:46] Speaker C: We got places to go. And maybe in line at the deli, you might talk to the person Next to you, maybe. [01:12:51] Speaker A: Only if there's something to complain about, though, right? [01:12:54] Speaker C: Absolutely. Of course. They ran out of bagels. I have to complain about that. Ob. All right. I love this. Okay, we're gonna talk. We're gonna talk food and dining. Favorite rotational dining restaurant. Oh, Coco. [01:13:07] Speaker A: Phenomenal. It's beautiful. [01:13:09] Speaker C: Oh, so good. [01:13:11] Speaker A: So good. [01:13:11] Speaker C: Food is good. The entertainment is good. Like, yeah. [01:13:14] Speaker A: The food was so much better than I expected, reading the reviews. It's more. It's not spicy, but it's more really flavorful. It's great. [01:13:21] Speaker C: And there are some hits and misses, but, like, I think it's. I think in general, it's more hits than misses. [01:13:28] Speaker A: Our server was from Mexico, so it was kind of funny to me talking about. This is not. [01:13:31] Speaker C: He's like, this is not Mexican food. [01:13:33] Speaker A: Of course, certain dishes, other things he did. [01:13:35] Speaker C: Like I was gonna say, he probably helped steer you towards the right dishes too. [01:13:39] Speaker A: I just followed his recommendations every night. [01:13:41] Speaker C: Yeah, that's the way to go. All right, favorite. We're gonna talk a favorite sweet and a favorite savory item. We start with the sweets. We save the best for last. What was a favorite sweet item on the cruise? [01:13:50] Speaker A: Churro. Mickey. Waffles. [01:13:52] Speaker C: Yes. Favorite savory item? [01:13:54] Speaker A: The hash browns at breakfast. [01:13:57] Speaker C: That's a good answer. That's a good answer. [01:13:59] Speaker A: I mean, obviously, it's everything I ate at Anjante, but to not be elitist, those are the two. Buffet food. [01:14:05] Speaker C: I love it. Okay, you know what's coming? Your favorite ship. You can choose from the Magic, the Dream, and the Treasure. All three incredible ships. But there might only be one right answer. Here. [01:14:18] Speaker A: Has to be the Treasure. Obviously not going to forsake you, but it hurts to not choose the Dream and the Magic. They're both really special. I would. I would gladly go back on them for cruises. [01:14:30] Speaker C: Yes, I think that. And that's. That's. I think what people need to understand when I ask your favorite, that doesn't mean I'm gonna say I'm not gonna go on the magic or I'm not gonna go on the Wish. Like, of course I would go on any of the ships. If you. If you tell me I'm going on the Wish tomorrow, I'm thrilled. [01:14:45] Speaker A: Yeah. [01:14:45] Speaker C: But, like, if I. Yeah, I'll have [01:14:48] Speaker A: to come back after we get on the Destiny. [01:14:50] Speaker C: Yeah, absolutely. Well, I guess. Spoiler alert. All right. Your bucket list cruise. Miranda. If you could go anywhere in the world on a Disney Cruise Line ship, [01:14:58] Speaker A: where I think it's the transatlantic sailing, coming home to New York City, which has already sold out for. For next fall when the Wish comes home. Also the Panama Canal. That sounds so cool. [01:15:09] Speaker C: So good. Both bucket list cruises for sure. Well, Miranda, a plus. I gave you an extra plus for being a New Yorker and for Beauty and the Beast. So, yeah, you've passed the flying colors. I know. Brian wants to ask, ask what's next. [01:15:26] Speaker A: Yeah, we have a lot of stuff booked. Actually just a couple months from now. My husband and I are. We. We don't do this very often, but we're leaving our kids and going on Utopia of the Seas with Royal to go check back in and see. Well, we did want more of a party atmosphere, I guess, than Disney is. So we'll see how that goes then. My whole family, plus my mom are going back on Royal next spring. This is a group cruise. I'm a veterinarian and it's a continuing education cruise organized by some women who are veterinarians turned travel agents. So we're going on Icon of the Seas. Very excited about that. And then we did have Wonder to Alaska booked for next August over Labor Day weekend again because late school, but we've had a family conflict up. A bar mitzvah was scheduled and so we. I haven't rebooked it yet, but I'm thinking there's a Destiny cruise around that I think will work. And it's, you know, the Alaska cruises are so much expensive. So now the four night Destiny seems so reasonable. So it's possible we might see if we can snag a concierge room to try that out. [01:16:36] Speaker C: Ooh. All right, well, you'll have to come back and join us to talk about. I think we'll want you to come back to talk about that. Destiny sailing. I cannot wait to hear what your son thinks of all of that Marvel stuff and what you all think of it as well. I think it's. It's such a cool ship with so many cool experiences on board. But with that, like, it seems like you've caught the cruise bug, Miranda. Whether. But you know, whether on Royal or on Disney, which, you know, I think you're right if you want the more of a party atmosphere pivoting to that Royal sailing is a. Is a good idea. And also, you know, if you just want to cruise more and I didn't [01:17:16] Speaker A: think I could go on a Disney without my kids, so here we are. [01:17:20] Speaker C: I'm gonna tell you, you can. I'm gonna give you permission. You absolutely can. [01:17:25] Speaker A: They'll be mad, but they'll get over it. [01:17:27] Speaker C: Yes, exactly. They'll be mad, but they'll get over it and you bring them something back and tell them you'll take them on the next one. Just. Yeah. Well, but thank you so much for joining us, Miranda. We'd love to have you back. This was so much fun. And with that we'll just say thanks. [01:17:42] Speaker A: Great. Thank you guys.
